Slive says no 'public hanging' for bad calls

CHATTANOOGA — SEC Mike Slive said there is no reason to have a “public hanging” when game officials make bad calls.

Speaking to a Chattanooga civic club Thursday, Slive was asked why the SEC doesn’t publicly reprimand game officials for mistakes.

The league has acknowledged there was a bad call this past weekend when Georgia receiver A.J. Green was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Slive joked that nobody wanted his job Monday.

He said the SEC has an accountability system for officials and if somebody is not good enough they won’t stay. The commissioner said he’s “just never felt that a public hanging in the square” will make better officials.

Slive also talked about the SEC’s lucrative TV deals and said he does not favor a football playoff.

Not only was the AJ Green play a bad call, but the make-up call at the other end was just as bad. On the plus side, I got to see UGA lose.

geez, this is almost as bad as the news in july and august. nothing to read here, move along.

Slive doesn't support a playoff?? I wonder how much the BCS is paying him to say that. If he truly believes that he needs to be smacked over the head!

I'll have to disagree with you about what you saw as a make-up call being just as bad. I've read the LSU's kid's explanation, and have no problem with what he said about giving God credit. But it he did seem to be pointing to the stands and drawing attention to himself, which would be more than enough to draw the flag.

I'm with you on a playoff. The reason Slive is not, is very simple: money. The BCS presidents don't want a playoff, because they share in conference revenues. It's his job to help the SEC make as much as possible and keep the presidents happy. Can't really blame him for doing his job. Doesn't make it right, just explains it. Go Vols! Beat Georgia!

I want a playoff also, but the SEC has been in the last 3 Championship games. That is why he doesn't want one. Now if the SEC goes the next 3 years without being in one then his tune would change I bet.

The man is right, the ONLY reason BB was ranked higher in any service is because of the circus like show he put on recruiting day and waiting to sign. Trent committed in June and never waivered. And he is bigger, stronger and faster than BB. In fact BB would be a redshirt for Bama, and Montario might be fourth in the rotation at Bama. The only player on the Tennessee roster that would crack the starting lineup is Eric Berry, he's the real deal at safety.

A little obsessed with Florida here arent we? This article had nothing to do with the Gators or Meyer, but you certainly tried to twist it into them. As for your post, 1. Meyer does support a playoff. 2. What exactly does Slive have to do with Auburn not being voted by computers and voters for the BCS game in 2004? I must have missed where conference commissioners had votes in deciding that. 3. what other "corruption" has conference USA had? Do you even know other teams?

Vandy has a True Freshman RB Warren Norman with better numbers than both Richardson and Brown. Recruiting services are no different than Mel Kiper. All kids ranked 1-100 as HS seniors might as well be the same because the biggest difference in these kids is how they handle the jump from HS to college then on to the NFL. Oh yeah, Vols beat Georgia by 10+ this Saturday!!

He was ranked way before the "circus."

It was the call on Green that was the make-up call. The first of those bogus calls was against LSU on the touchdown that put them ahead before Green's score. It was after the call on Green that LSU got the short field for their final winning drive.

Posting the same inane comments on each thread doesn't actually make them any more credible. I realize that with your narrow focus, it is hard to come up with new ways to say the same few things, but the problem is NOT solved by mindless repetition.

WOW a bammer brain....Shizz in one hand and wonder in the other one...then see which one fills up the quickest.....Can't bammer afford a news site for their fans to call home? Oh yes, now I see, the news sites are as tired of your trash as other teams sites are. Anyway, this is all I have to say to ALL the LOPERS here: "Siss on you Pister you are to much Trucking Fuble anyway". Go Big Orange, Beat the Shizz out of Bama. Surely we will find something to do with all the socks and shoes that remain.

I agree, someone has to be held accountable.

It is not fair for athletes to work their tails off from August til now only to have some part time used car salesman to show up saturday and throw a flag just so he can be seen on TV. Take some responsibility Slive!!!

The quality of the officating in the SEC is ruining the sport....there must be some accountability here and more importantly some consistency. Every game I watched after GA/LSU had instances of "celebration" that exceeded the Ga game. And the makeup call just proves the point...This inferior officating is not just a one time thing, but week after week....these guys should be held accountable in some way or at least trained and supervised

So let me get this straight--it's okay to give a coach "a public hanging" for a misguided but harmless comment, but it's not okay to criticize the refs for bad calls that affect the outcome of a game. Really????

My sentiments exactly.

Also, we need to call down BOTH coaches sometimes (Meyer and the Gatrolls claimed they had the whine flu, Kiffin responds, Slive called them both) rather than going after the "first punch."

About officiating: There were more missed calls on AUBURN than I've seen in awhile. Holding on almost every play: flagrant. As to Ala., they are in for an awakening w/ S. C. & Tenn. both. Just wait.

Why would anyone who has so little knowledege about the game be on a website talking phooey about it? Get your facts straight before you come on here running your redneck mouth. You are a fool and youve displayed it well with that statement.

I dare someone to convince me that the Bowl System and BCS generates more money than a Playoff would. I remember Will Ferrell's line from Zoolander at the end when everyone thinks Zoolander is so awesome. He feels like the only one that gets it and says he feels like he is taking CRAZY PILLS!!!

Which game in an 8/12/16 team playoff would have low ratings? (I know I am the only one proposing 12. Why? That way, the top 4 get a bye.) How does the regular season lose importance by having to make it to the playoff? If you miss it, you can go to a bowl. Granted, who would watch the Poulan Weedeater Bowl with a playoff. Make Boise St. win MORE than 1 big game. With 16 teams, you get 15 games total. Play those at the bowl locations. I don't get it! Who gets less money?

I feel like I am taking CRAZY PILLS!!!
