Kiffin to watch recruits play football in Georgia on Friday night using helicopter

Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron will be going from high school to high school in the Atlanta area on Friday night. And they will use a helicopter to do so.

The UT coaches be aboard a helicopter and land at Martin Luther King High School, which hosts Stephenson from Stone Mountain, Ga., to watch a number of prospects.

MLK tailback Mack Brown is a Florida commitment that UT is heavily recruiting. Juniors DeMarco Robinson and safety Cameron Myers are also prospects that UT has shown interest in.

Stephenson will also field some UT prospects, namely linebacker Tyrone Cornelius, who is committed to Miami. The Vols are also recruiting two juniors from Stephenson: linebacker Jared Boyd and offensive guard Tarik Cook.

UT’s coaches will fly to North Gwinnett High in Suwanee, Ga., to watch highly touted offensive lineman Jawuan James, who visited UT last weekend.

North Gwinnett is hosting Northview, which will field defensive tackle Denzel McCoy and tight end/offensive lineman Cameron Fordham, along with junior quarterback Kane Whitehurst.

Well, you gotta give it to CLK. He knows how to make headlines and grab recruits' attention, that's for sure.

This info was in the AJC today from a local sports writer; he is definitely getting attention everywhere he goes and apparently worries the other teams in the SEC since they watch every move he makes.

GreensboroVol writes:

Fulmer never would have done this. Of course, the helicopter wouldn't have been able to get off the ground with him in it either.

Kiffen and his coaching staff are setting the bar high. I hope he keep it up for the next 5 years. Who out there thinks this kind of recruiting effort we not pay off in long run. Other coach in the SEC must be getting POed about all the pub Tennessee is getting. When has a 3-3 team look to be moving forward any better than this Tennessee team!!! Go Vols!!! Never let up...Coaches, Player, and Big Orange Fans!!!

This is Kiffin's wheel house. I guarantee you he has dotted the i's and crossed the t's. Not only will he be able to get to a lot more games, he will also be able to wow the recruits.

I like Kiffin's approach and as long as he can get away with it fine. But this is over the top. The whole recruiting process throughout the NCAA for football and bball is outlandish. As a student the past few years you would see recruits the majority of which wouldn't sign and an even greater number that wouldn't get into UT without athletics receiving huge goodiebags and outrageous orange coats walking around campus. I understand the costs involved with competing in major athletics, and if that is what it takes spend it, but the NCAA spends so much time limiting and punishing for stupid phooey that they should be looking over the big picture.

...its fall break, I thought you trolled this website enough to know the kids won't be back until next week after Wednesday's practice.
I guess instead of keeping your nose up Kiffin's butt see what he's doing week to week, you should probably be questioning the conflict of interest between your Coach and QB. I mean, either way, he's a QB(Quarterback or Queer bait)... but Meyer's eskimo kisses made us understand their love for one another.

The point in doing it would be lost if he didn't let everyone that will listen know what was going on. It's the hype that IS the point regarding recruiting. We as adults don't quite see it the same way the recruit would. IMO

This is not as pricey as you might think. Renting a copter for two-three hours is a smart expenditure of recruiting budget dollars. If that copter has big power Ts on the doors and recruits see it and are wowed by Kiff and Special Ed swooping in to see them play, we might land one or two extra. There are some big uglies here in the ATL that need to be wearing orange.

stinky_pinky writes:

The chopper is a great move but Kiffin can't take credit for it. I believe Neuheisel did the same thing last yr or the yr before in the LA area.

It's great. Kiffin's doing exactly what he said he'd do.

These are his words....

"We're always trying to be cutting-edge. We're always trying to learn what's new. Stay on top of things. Not just continue to do what we do and let people catch up to us and pass us. And so we do the same thing in recruiting."
