Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, left, talks Friday with forward Amber Gray, who's back after having surgery this summer for a brain aneurysm.

There were many eyes watching Tennessee's first official women's basketball practice of the season.

Friday's workout coincided with a weekend coaches clinic being conducted by Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt and UT men's coach Bruce Pearl. Lady Vols freshman guard Kamiko Williams was at ease with a microphone in hand, introducing herself to the gathering at Thompson-Boling Arena. The actual practice was a different matter.

"I can deal with the crowd, I can deal with the coaches, I just have to deal with myself,'' she said. "I'm my biggest enemy right now."

The Lady Vols began their evening's work at Pratt Pavilion, where they were met by the most noteworthy spectator: sophomore forward Amber Gray. She's returned to Knoxville after undergoing surgery in July to address an aneurysm in her brain.

"It's an amazing feeling,'' she said. "I loved being home with my family, but I missed my team and my coaches and all the other staff."

She also missed having a basketball in her hand.

"I think I might sleep with it tonight,'' she said. "It feels good to have a ball in my hand again."

For the time being, Gray will continue her rehabilitation and do some online classwork. She'll be an encouraging presence at practice, too.

"She kind of pumped us up in the beginning,'' Williams said.

Williams will be needing some pep in her step. The 2 1/2-hour workout underscored the difference between here and her high school days at Clarksville Northeast.

"It's just going to take awhile for my body to adjust to coming from high school, where I could just walk up and down the court, to now, where I can actually sprint up and down the court,'' she said. "It's going to be good."

From Summitt's perspective, Williams' adjustment also will involve reconditioning her play.

"This was really good for Kamiko,'' Summitt said. "She was not really comfortable. I don't think that was because we had people in the stands. It was because she has so much to learn. She played the game by herself for about half the night. You can't fault her for that. That's what she did in high school. That's all she knows. Now she has to learn to be a great teammate and make good reads and make good decisions."

"I just wanted to go get the ball out of her hands and say 'pass it.' "

Summitt figures the practice was an eye-opening experience for fellow freshmen Taber Spani and Faith Dupree, too. It was the first of many. The next practice is this morning.

1st. Is it just me, or does it sound like Williams is not a team player and never has been? I haven't seen many positive things written about her yet. Welcome to the big league girl, time to wise up. Your not a one woman team anymore...

It's just you.

She's lived in Germany most of her life, going from one army base to the next. She's had to be good at being alone, but sports also provided her the chance to be a team member. For the first time in her life, she is probably not the best player on the team and everyone around are as good or better. Coach has seen this countless times as All Americans High School players join the team and knows what to do. Give her KW time to be a freshman and learn the game at this level.

I don't get that feeling, but I do get the feeling that she has to learn to share the wealth more. These kids were head & shoulder better than other high school players, they were stars, now they are on a team filled with stars and they have to adjust. Faith has the experince of playing with Glory and having a former Lady Vol as her high school coach. Spani has her recent gold medal play for the USA 18 & under team this summer. Williams just has to adjust and since Pat thinks she can contribute to the program then I believe she'll come around. It is about her being a freshman.

For which team, Loper? Go Lady Vols!

I trust Pat but it sure does seem that we are signing a lot of "projects" or girls that need handholding...like all the freshmen from last year. We do much better with the ladys of the past that didn't require so much development. Recruiting needs to get back up to speed.

I hate to say it.......but UConn will be the team again this year............maybe another undefeated year.........Darn it!

I bet Pat will put the best player against her and show her what it takes to be a winner as a team.

The Lady Vols have done pretty well over the years when they had an offensive minded player (Candace & Chamique) that wasn't afraid to take over the game and let everyone else fill in as role players. I say free Kamiko!

Hey Mikey, did she get a tour of ESPN studios while she was there?

Kamiko Williams....I saw YouTube video on this girl and what Pat said was accurate. Half the night she played the game by herself. That does not mean she did not play as a team, but it means that she was just on another level of athleticism that most girls on that court, starters or bench, and it was obvious she had a different motor than anyone else on that floor. She played well with her team but you could see her teammates also just walk and watch her do her thing as she took over.

I see her being a project as someone mentioned. I'm not sure if she'll ever "get it" this year but if she's persistent and feisty which she seems to be, then I have a feeling she'll be a better sophomore and a great junior and senior. Right now she just has a lot to undo, a lot to learn, a lot of basketball IQ to absorb to play PG, and not a lot of time to fit it all in so we just need to give her time.

To some of us, Philly is absolutely not Noth. I can see Canada from my back door -- maybe I should run for public office.... touting my national security expertise. You can never trust those Canadians.

You're not winning anything this year. Baylor holds the winning card.

One 6'8''player does not necessarily mean a National Championship. Although Kim Mulkey may want it to....Duke didn't get one with Michelle Van Gorp.
