Georgia commitment Robey may take visit to Vols

First-year Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin cited the Vols' victory over Georgia as a major boost to recruiting in state of Georgia. It apparently doesn't end there for the Vols.

Nickell Robey, a cornerback from Frostpoof (Fla.) High School, will reportedly take an official visit to UT due to the uncertainty surrounding Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez. Robey also plans to take an official visit to South Florida.

Martinez has been at the center of fan scrutiny for the last two seasons for the Bulldogs (3-2, 2-1). Martinez' defense ranks 69th in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

"He's still with Georgia," Frostproof coach Brad Metheny told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He just has these two visits he's going to go ahead take.

"But he hasn't changed a whole lot. He just wants to make sure he has options if there needs to be any changes."

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Robey, who also stars as a kick returner, has been committed to Georgia since July.

"You know, he's got legitimate concerns," Metheny said, referring to Martinez' job security. "Coach Martinez is the coach that recruited him and that would be coaching him and so forth. So if he's not there, who's the next guy coming and what's his philopshy on shorter corners? So he just wants, if anything would happen to happen, to have some options out there."

Metheny told the AJC that UT defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin visited Frostproof last week and that he was the only coach to have visited him lately.

"He still likes Georgia," Metheny said. "I mean, he sat right in front of Monte Kiffin last week and said, 'No, I'm going to Georgia.' So I think the bottom line is he just wants to take a trip or two and enjoy that and see what's out there."

Metheny said Martinez, Georgia coach Mark Richt and assistant coach Bryan McClendon are coming to Frostproof on Friday.

Robey still has strong ties to Georgia, even if Martinez were to be replaced. Robey's cousin is Georgia redshirt freshman tailback Carlton Thomas.

what is this kid rated? At 5-8 many of the WR we face are much taller. I guess if he is a burner that would help.

Looks like a fast athlete and a 4 star corner, but at 5-8 I'd have to wonder if he could be a full time corner. If he were a UConn commit would we be talking? Speed rules and if Monte wants him, I'm in, but not for just the sake of sticking one to UGA.

Rivals has him as a 4 Star, 9th best CB, #174 on Rivals 250 w/ offers from Florida, UT, UGA, Michigan, Ohio St, W Va, Va Tech, etc...

Whatever happens will happen! I trust CLK and staff to bring the top notch recruits in here to compete for early playing time. That in itself will be a BIG factor for a lot of great HS athletes. Go Vols!

Sounds like Frostproof coach has a little PahokeePrincipalitis. He enjoyed the reworking of that statement to say that he told Monte Kiffin no. Please... "To rephrase, "he gazed into the fiery eyes of the dark deacon of defense and courageously TOLD HIM NOOOOOOOO."

He'll probably be a Vol next season and he can hitch a ride with Rodney Garner.

Completely agree...even if he can cover how is he going to tackle 230lb backs in the SEC? Can you see him stopping Bama's Ingram? Hardly.

Its never bad news when a quality player considers you, but to be truthful, I'm wondering about our momentum recruiting lately. Other than losing a commitment to Ariz. State and not getting one we wanted, (NC commit), there's been no real news for ages. I know its still early, and probably I got spoiled by the rash of good news in recruiting for a while there, but we seem to have hit the doldrums all of a sudden. Anyone else getting that feeling? For all the positives from the Georgia game and visibility on the visits and such, no new commitments for a while.

Here's hoping for that batch of mean, ugly, bulldozer OLs.

I know how you feel, but these things have a rhythm of their own. The coaches just finished a week or so interviewing guys all over the country. Most of the "blue-chippers" still have official visits at lots of different places. Also, it may or may not make you feel any better, but many of these guys, including--gulp!--some of our present commits, will change their minds a few times before National Signing Day. I know it's hard, but try to stay patient until then; right now it's all guess-work at best. I'm not aware of any OTHER school reporting an avalanche of new commits, but of course when we hear of this one committing here and that one committing there, it may SEEM that way.

Isn't Travis about to star in another TLC program... Inside an American jail? or do I have him mixed up with someome else?

It doesnt matter what he is rated. If he is good enough that Monte Kiffin visits him personally, thats good enough for me. If we get him, well and good...if not, we move on to our next target.
