Spurrier: Alabama used tape trick on field goals

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Alabama used some tape trickery to spot field goals and extra points last weekend and is asking the SEC if that is legal.

While reviewing video of the No. 23 Gamecocks 20-6 loss, Spurrier said Tuesday he looked like the Crimson Tide holder put a small piece of white tape on the ground to spot PATs and field goals.

“I thought you just had to put it on the ground. But they had a little piece of white tape or something, and I looked at it on tape and I said, ’What’s that little piece of white there?’. Then after the guy kicked it he grabbed it and put it back in his pocket,” Spurrier said.

SEC officials received a formal complaint from South Carolina officials Tuesday and are looking into the matter, league spokesman Charles Bloom said.

Alabama officials say its coaches have been reminded of the rule on placekicks.

Crimson Tide kicker Leigh Tiffin hit both extra points and field goals of 25 and 35 yards Saturday, while missing a 49-yarder. The senior is 9-of-11 on field goals and 21-of-23 on PATs this season.

Spurrier said he has no idea if the what he thinks happened is legal.

“I’ve never seen that before,” Spurrier said. “But I’m sure they’ve probably been doing it all year.”

The NCAA football rulebook (Rule 6-3; Article 10; subsection d) says:

“Any device or material used to mark the spot of a scrimmage place kick or elevate the ball makes the kick illegal.”

The penalty is “illegal kick” and is five yards from the previous spot.

It's in their DNA. Always has been, always will be.

Can't wait to hear their interpretation of the rule. I've never heard of this trick before, but if it is illegal, what are the penalties? Would they have to forfeit the outcome? What's the deal? After all the bickering between the Tide and the NCAA, if it is found to be illegal, what will the NCAA do?

The prospect of "no marking device" should give Tiffin plenty to think about between now and Saturday.

And this game could come down to a FG. Bwwahahaha!

Gator_Hater (Inactive) writes:

Okay, gotta read the article twice before I comment. Saw the penalty for five yards, but now that it has been acknowledged that they did it, will the officiating crew be reprimanded for repeatedly missing it? This officiating is getting downright rediculous.

Thanks for the insight. Well, I don't guess the kicker will be doing it this Sat. and hopefully it throws him off and he misses some kicks.

Its a spotting aid for the kicker prior to the snap & placement which aids in his setup and timing; also its kind of like a better lie in golf because the ball sets up nicely on the "tape, mark?" and not in the grass, mud, or other field conditions. Its cheating just like a pitcher putting a foreign substance on the ball in baseball or corking a bat. If they checked Bama's "kicking" balls they probably got helium in them;)

No they should loose every pt that was scored using a marker. That could well mean loosing the game. It is hard to tell what the add pent. of 5 yards would have on the game. But lose of pts should be mandatory.

You're a but, you are hoping Al must forfeit so Fl will not have to play them. and you down play the Bs that took place in the Fl Ark game. Fl was helped much more than the marker helped Bama. I will not matter Ga will hand Fl their a;;
Super Steve may do the same thing. So go whine 0n another site.

Sorry Rey I know this is tough for you but the Vols play on Sat. They haven't made Excuses and won't/ Not after any lose this year. There was no swine flu in Tenn. only Fl.

mbible1utk#324980 writes:

it could also be cheating in that the tape lines up the angle of the foot for the kicker... that way instead of having to visually remember exactly where the center of the uprights are, all he has to do is focus on the line of the tape leading up to the ball.

One has to wonder at what point the NCAA will say "enough is enough" with Alabama... I mean, seriously, is it THAT hard to not cheat?

First, Coach Spurrier just "asks" the question of how Lane could go recruiting without passing the test. Not pointing the finger, just "askin'"

You know the rules. Grow some, Steve.

Start working on your excuses - here's some help - Jones is having a soph slump, McElroy has lost his confidence, we didn't get to use our place marker on kicks, the Vols running game was better than expected, its only one loss we can still win the SEC and NC, you probably will have a bigger list by about 7:00 pm ET Sat.

I agree. The text books only help if the recipient of the book can read. Free text books would not help in this case.

and for those wondering how I acquired that text book, it was in the free bin at McKay's... they don't accept books that have already been colored in.

Is it possible that one program can end up in the negative with the NCAA ?
This is the most pathetic program in the country.
