Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey is among three women's tennis players chosen to play for the United States in the fourth annual Master'U BNP Paribas tournament.
The event - Dec. 9-14 in Poitiers, France - will feature eight teams composed of college and university players from around the world. Teams from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Great Britain and Mexico will participate. The best-of-seven format consists of two men's and two women's singles matches, a men's and women's doubles match and a mixed doubles match.
Whoriskey is the first UT player to play in this event. Whoriskey won the doubles title earlier this month at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships and reached the semifinals in singles at the tournament.
Baseball: Tennessee's 2009 recruiting class is ranked No. 14 nationally by Baseball America.
UT is one of six SEC teams ranked in the magazine's top 25. The Vols trail Florida (1), Mississippi State (8), Ole Miss (12) and Vanderbilt (13). Kentucky is ranked 15th.
"This ranking shows that we are on track to get our program back to the level we want it to be at,'' Tennessee coach Todd Raleigh said. "We've added a lot of talent and depth to our roster with this class and I've been very pleased with the effort and work ethic they've shown in fall practice so far."
Swimming And Diving: Tennessee's Brad Craig and diver Ryan Helms have been named the SEC's athletes of the week.
Craig won the 100- and 200-meter breastroke against LSU and swam on two relays: 200 medley and 400 freestyle.
Helms swept the diving competition and was less than seven points off his career best in the three-meter (397.57).
Men's Cross Country: Tennessee's Leoule Degfae was named SEC freshman of the week after finishing 31st overall at the Panorama Farms Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
Degfae covered the 8,000-meter course in a career-best 24 minutes, 38.61 seconds.
