Petrino reprimanded by SEC for criticizing officials

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino has been reprimanded by the SEC after publicly criticizing officials who worked his team’s loss to Florida last weekend.

The league announced its action Thursday night, a day after saying the officiating crew from the Razorbacks’ 23-20 loss would be suspended. The officials came under scrutiny after a personal foul call on Arkansas’ Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter. The league said there was no video evidence to support the call.

Petrino has been critical of the officials, although the league didn’t specify which comments earned the reprimand.

He wasn't reprimanded for comments, but because SEC was caught with hand in cookie jar. Someone is cheating, we'll never know who. Why is it that eight officials couldn't see a piece of white tape on the ground in the SC/Ala game. Looks like someone wants to see two undefeated teams in SEC champ. game. What chance will UT have this week?

Reprimanded for criticizing officials that were so incompetent (or corrupt) that the SEC had to suspend them. The suspension probably would have never happened if not for the criticism by Petrino. This is just a case of the SEC trying to save face. The SEC seriously needs to clean up its act. If the officials are totally incompetent or corrupt, you can’t say anything. If an SEC coach is so unethical as to continually harass a high school kid when he is visiting another school, don’t dare criticize that coach or call him a cheat. Slive is becoming a major embarrassment and is very detrimental to college sports.

The reprimand was probably worth it. Otherwise the SEC would have just scolded the crew for being so obvious. It happens everywhere. FSU vs NC, last seconds of the game, NC is trying to get in position for a field goal and the ball is intercepted. The officials looked at the tape that was obviously conclusive. Right call, interception and since the whistle blew on the field, No TD but FSU ball at the spot, game over. The crew upheld the call on the field and maintained the drama for another minute or so. It's amazing to me, how many bad calls remain even with instant replay.

Whats interesting about UF is they have for years been leaders in penalties for BCS teams. Then all of a sudden they are on of the least penalized teams in the country. There DB's bump and hold all over the field and have not been called once for holding or pass interference. THeer O line which has traditionally held more then any team in the conference (goes with the offense they run) suddenly never hold.

Its a disgrace the way the refs have put there whistles away when UF has the ball. Now that the conference is taking heat they suddenly are punishing the refs.

I really worry about how the game Saturday will be called if we get ahead late. Will UT suddenly get a couple of phantom pass interference calls against us. Will a dubious hold be called on an off tackle to make sure UA gets the ball back? Will the refs turn their heads away when an obvious foul is not called on UA. Just wondering

I guess the question is does the SEC have an agenda?

Your post is right on the button. After getting hosed by THREE bad calls in a row in the fourth quarter of a close game as a visitor, I would think a coach would have every right to complain publicly. And even if he gets reprimanded, it's better than sitting silent in the face of such blatant homer calls. At least the players and fans know he'll stand up for the program. Good for Petrino, I'm glad he made his critical comments public.
