TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Anybody interested in a mid-term football exam?

For Tennessee, today marks the opportunity to compare notes with one of the elite programs in the Southeastern Conference and the nation. Have the Vols progressed since the Florida game when they lost 23-13 to the Gators?

For Alabama, this is a chance to edge one step closer to the promised land of college football.

These are the rules of engagement, circa 2009: UT is playing for respect while Alabama is playing for a national championship.

I hope Bama overlooks us this afternoon. It seems them and the gators already are thinking about the SEC championship. Not only that Ingram is #1 in the Heisman race. Sounds like a great recipe for an upset. Let's spoil their plans and shake up the SEC and the BCS.

Clarification: We want the success they are currently having on the football field, a success that, not too long ago, was being enjoyed by the Vols ( and will hopefully be enjoyed again in short order ). However, we want no part of the classless, morally absent program known as Alabubba. We don't want a coach that goes before the nation and world and LIES about where he is and isn't gonna coach. We don't want players who break the rules (tape on the field is small taters compared to the other things they have done) and we don't want the relationship they have with the NCAA. We can win, we can win big, and we can win CLEAN. GO BIG ORANGE!!!

Well said.

Remember when Bama won like 9 straight games in the late 80's and early 90's? Just when we thought they owned us.... we won 10 straight through the Manning era and more. After a little back and forth, Bama has won what...4 or is it 5 straight? Ok... now the Lane Train. Whether it's this game, or next years, it's time for the VOLS to run a streak of wins on the elephants. GOTTA LOVE THE BEST RIVALRY IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!!!

rockytopatl writes:

For those of us who remember Tennessee football before the 1990s, Alabama was always "The Game." Arch-rivals, Bear Bryant in his houndstooth hat, leaning against the goal post during warmups, old Legion Field, and it really was the Crimson vs. the Big Orange, no washed out white jerseys on the road for the Vols.

Just a few of my best Tennessee-Alabama memories:
Being in Neyland in 1982 when we snapped an 11-game losing streak by beating the Bear's last team, 35-28, in dramatic fashion. I lived in Birmingham then and posted the score in my back glass and went slow enough on the drive home to get passed by lots of Bama fans who would not look me in the eye!

In 1995, we snapped another horrible losing streak -- nine years -- by smacking them 41-14. That began a streak of seven straight Tennessee victories by Fulmer's best teams over all the Bear-wannabes from Tuscaloosa.

Our last two wins over Bama, in 2004 and 2006, were low-scoring defensive games, the same kind we need to win today -- 17-13 and 16-13.

Go Vols, do it!!

Bear Bryant said he judged a player by how hard they played in the fourth quarter of the Tennessee game. That says it all how big the game really is.

I concur! My wife is an Alabam Alum and her family is big Tide fans, but one week out of the year I wanna smash their mouths. Today marks the end of that week. Go Vols!!!

Not really, we can beat em and they beat UF in Atlanta and still be NC's. I think this game is more about pride for UT. No moral victories needed, just a win. GBO!!!

A pox on moral victories.

Playing Catch Up
Notice the statement "playing catch up" in the article. That is more true than it would have been had the AD and other decision makers had the guts to make last year’s decision a couple years earlier.
Don't get me wrong I respect Fulmer, not a hater, but CPF lost this team by '05 and never got it back. Had it not been for his ties to the university he would have been fired long before '08.
UT has to re-establish it’s self in the SEC. So far Kiffin and his staff have the program going in the right direction.
A major upset of Bama today would be a major step in the battle to regain all the recruitment losses UT has suffered due to a program that was most noted for the bad than the good over the past 10 years.
The GA win was good but GA is going the direction UT was headed before Fulmer was let go.
Right now it is UF and Bama then everybody else.
No one ever remembers who came in 2nd, 1st loser as it is. I look forward to the day that teams look to upset UT to “play catch up”. I understand it takes patience when you are rebuilding a program that was in such disarray as UT’s was, but can you blame us for wanting it all now. For years we have been severed lines of coach speak instead of results, promises unfulfilled of a better day. Now we see it coming and want to get to the goal line quicker than we can because of a late start and having to “play catch up”.
Keeping it Real
Go Vols!!!

I agree with everything you just said DV, but like you said we're rebuilding and with that comes a sense of patience. I'd love to be talked about like UA and UF right now don't get me wrong. With CPF we were always looking forward to the future bc of promises that were never made. With a new, highly regarded staff I believe we can honestly say without hesitation "I look forward to the future!" Nice post and Go Vols!!!

Amen. I cringe when I read the hatred and vitriol in some of the comments on this site; whether the opponent is Bama, the Gators, or whomever. However, the comments have been worse this week because the press is rightfully praising Alabama- and the knee jerk reaction from some of the fans seems to be '**** Alabama'. But that same press will also have to rightfully praise Tennessee if they beat the #2 (BCS) team in America. Think about it.

I see we are wearing White jerseys and Orange pants. Kiffin must not be a fan of all white. I dont think we have a good record in the orange pants. Lets hope that changes today. This game will depend on how Crompton plays today.

I too am sick and tired of all the mean-spiritedness on here. I have been guilty of it myself, but only in response to some dip-wad who keeps saying 'we' when referring to Fla. or Ala. when he has no connection to the school, other than he had enuff money to go to Wal Mart and buy a gator or tide t-shirt, and then BOOM! Now his personal identity is as a gator or tide fan.

If u have invested years and years into being a "fan' of a school, and stuck it through the bad times AND the good, then fine, you have "we" status, but it is obvious that 99 % of the jerks saying "we" when referring to Ala. or Fla. are simply frontrunners that jumped on board recently just to inflate their ego's and add meaning to their pathetic lives.

Anybody can do that. I can go out to Wal Mart today and buy a Steeler jersey and all of a sudden "Hey, I'm cool. I'm a Super Bowl champion. I am SOMEBODY now." BS I say to that. People with character are the ones who stick their neck out when "their' team is down like UT has been.

Now I guess I'm guilty of a little mean-spiritedness, if so my regrets.

Plenty of promises were "made". Very few were kept.
