Two Lady Vols in regional quarterfinals

A Tennessee Lady Vols tennis senior and freshman have reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals.

The veteran, Caitlin Whoriskey, won a pair of matches to reach the quarters. Evansville's Kate Chybowski put up a fight before losing 6-4, 6-0. Whoriskey beat Vanderbilt's Hannah Blatt 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16.

First-year Lady Vol Kata Szekely, seeded eighth, overcame Miami's Natalie Araya, 6-4, 7-6, in her first match Saturday. The Hungary native followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Courtney Collins of Memphis.

The Lady Vols doubles team of Maria Sorbello and Szekely, seeded seventh, rallied to beat the Kentucky duo of Caroline Lilly and Megan Broderick. Sorbello and Szekely won in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7).

The victory advanced the Lady Vols duo to the semifinals today, where they will face Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu.

The Tennessee team of Zubor and Alda, seeded No. 1, lost to Vanderbilt's Heather Steinbauer and Erica Robertson, 8-6.

Men's Tennis: Two Tennessee doubles teams scored victories at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

The UT duos of Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith as well as Boris Conkic and Rhyne Williams advanced.

Baseball: Led by strong pitching efforts by Steven Gruver and Rob Catapano, the Orange team clinched Tennessee's Orange and White World Series, winning 25.3-25.18 as determined by the team's production scoring method.

Gruver and Catapano combined to pitch seven innings and allow just one run.

"The Orange team has simply outplayed the White team all series,'' UT coach Todd Raleigh said. "They've been able to capitalize on mistakes and get clutch hits and solid pitching. I thought both teams pitched extremely well today and it was probably our best pitched game this fall. Both sides threw a lot of strikes and only really got hurt when they fell behind in the count."

The teams will play again at 1 today at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Men's Golf: Tennessee is in a three-way tie for fourth after two rounds of the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.

The Vols shot an even-par 288 in Saturday's first round before improving to 282 to finish at 570. The Vols are tied with Augusta State and Michigan State, 10 shots behind leader Michigan.

UT's Robin Wingardh is in a seven-way tie for 10th in the individual standings at 140. Freshman Jay Vandeventer also cracked the top 20 with a 2-under 142.

Women's Golf: Winning the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships last weekend vaulted the Lady Vols 15 spots to No. 7 in the Golfweek top 25 rankings.

Tennessee won the tournament with a team score of 4-over 868 and sophomore Nathalie Mansson took medalist honors by surviving a five-hole playoff.
