Tennessee senior point guard Bobby Maze has a vision of himself playing in the Vols' vaunted "Controlled Chaos" press this season.
"You're like a defensive back, playing aggressive, reading the inbounder's eyes and making plays,'' Maze said. "Kind of like Eric Berry; I want to be everywhere.''
Maze arrived in Knoxville before last season with a great deal of hype; a junior college All-American with open-floor moves and some freestyle rap game to match.
There was no doubt few in the Big Orange Nation could wait for Maze to "Put on for Tennessee.''
But a not-so-funny thing happened on Maze's way to stardom: UT coach Bruce Pearl discovered the Vols couldn't press effectively just prior to the start of the SEC league games and a half-court game ensued.
"I'd played a lot of uptempo coming in, but we didn't end up doing much of it last season, so I wasn't doing a lot of what I was accustomed to,'' Maze said. "I was still working hard, but I wasn't working on the right stuff.''
Pearl said he wasn't so much disappointed with Maze's performance as the situation the incoming JUCO transfer was put in.
"You've got to remember, Bobby came late in the summer, and he never really got to know his teammates,'' Pearl said. "And we had lost four guards; we had to move Josh (Tabb) to the point.
"Without Bobby Maze, we don't win the SEC East.''
But winning the East wasn't enough, nor was Maze pleased with his individual performance.
How could he be? His mother left Thompson-Boling Arena disappointed on one occasion after driving eight hours from the Washington, D.C., area to see him play.
"She'd be like, 'how come you didn't take that guy off the dribble? I know you can do it,' '' Maze said. "It was frustrating.''
So Maze did the only thing he could: he went back to work.
"Now, I know my spots in our offense and where my shots will be,'' Maze said. "I wasn't used to catching and shooting . . . I was used to scoring off the dribble.
"I've also learned to make the extra pass to get the assists. I'm just a lot more confident in my game, man.''
Pearl said Maze has been dominant at times in practices and should benefit from the Vols adding another JUCO point guard in Melvin Goins.
"Our tempo this year is better suited for Bobby, and he's seeing where he can make plays,'' Pearl said. "It's bringing out the best in him.''
As for his defensive responsibilities, Maze said he just needs to turn on the tape.
"We've been watching film of past teams, and you see JaJuan Smith, Ramar (Smith) and C.J. (Watson),'' Maze said. "Seeing those tapes, and really studying them in detail, has opened our eyes.''
Step Up: Pearl said one new challenge for his team will be learning to be role players in different situations.
"We lost Emmanuel (Negedu) and Josh (Tabb), and those were two key role players,'' Pearl said, referring to Negedu's health issue and Tabb's indefinite suspension. "If you put three guys out there who can score and two that can screen and rebound you're going to be successful.
"But the ultimate situation is when you have five guys who can score and two of them realize they need to screen and rebound.''
Pearl said Monday's practice didn't go as well as the previous one.
"We have to make better reads in our transition offense as we've given them more flexibility on the fast break,'' Pearl said. "I've told them, sometimes less is more . . . we don't need five guys trying to score.''
Another Snub: USA Today's College Basketball section is on the shelves, and the Vols have no one on the preseason All-SEC first-team. Tyler Smith is second team.

If an up-tempo style is what Maze has been accustomed to, I hope that his game will improve if the Vols truly return to that style of play this year.
-And I definitely would disagree with And T-Smith not being a First Team All SEC player.

Say what you want. Pearl is focused and the players are better prepared to play fast again. The Vols will be a much improved team. Go Vols!!!

I agree with both of you guys. I think CBP and the team are going to take out a LOT of frustration on the rest of the country and be in a position to DEMAND the respect that is lacking right now.

We saw flashes of brilliance last year. I didn't like Bobby's play but I think he can. I hope thay play together. I don't care who scores as much as I care who plays defense. Playing together takes a tough point man. We could see it in Maze but usually didn't... regardless of the reasons. I'm expecting much more from Maze and his team this year. I'm excited and nervous.

One post I read indicates that Tarik Black may be visiting UT this weekend. He is a monster post player that Pearl needs, but yet another hard to get kid from Memphis. He is rumoured to be leaning to Alabama with Marquette and Memphis in the mix.

Perhaps Chism, who often evokes a cringe when he lofts one from 20+ feet away. You bring up a valid point. Pearls lack of recruiting over the last two yrs may show up. Perhaps Maze will show some decent outside shooting. I'm interested in seeing whether Tyler Smith has improved any.

I watched several of the Rocky Top League games this summer and all of the players have taken strides in improving their games. Hopson has added some weight and lowered the rainbow on his shot and he appears ready to take the SEC by storm.
Maze was lighting it up and playing some amazing man defense. He will be strong this year as well.
Chism as bad as I hate to say it will probably be a legitimate 3 point threat this year although I hope he keeps it more inside unless needed but I definitely wouldn't leave him standing alone on the perimeter. He may be a suprise for SEC player of the year if he remains focused on the prize.
Tyler is Tyler and he will be the maturity and the glue. I think he realizes now that he cannot be a one-man show, but he will be the "go-to" guy.
It's gonna be a suprising year. I think a lot of folks are looking at last year and saying same team same results, but I don't see it. What a difference a year is going to make. That is my prediction.
GO VOLS!!

I think a healthy tatum is gonna be a lot more consistent as well as b-maze. Mcbee if he can defend will probably see a little time as well but i do like chism ability to bring the center out of the paint so tyler and prince can penetrate

has anyone heard anything about Tabb leaving the program, not being suspended? i have heard he may be transferring due to family reasons

Tennessee hasn't had a dominate big man for many years and really needs to sign one. It changes everything in the way a team tries to defend you and opens up the fast break with the outlet pass.
Last year we would get to a crucial point in the game and we would make bonehead plays or turnovers. That's why we lost the close ones we had won before. Playing smarter and sharing the ball is tantamount to improvement this year.
I really will miss Negedu...sad.

WTH.. U need 2 tell that 2 JP Prince.. For some reason JP does not want 2 give up the ball on the fast break.. If JP stops trying 2 b a Hero or make ESPN it would b better 4 the team..

I'm happy 2 see my Nephew stayed focus over the summer.. I glad 2 C CBP going back to an uptempo type of game.. I like that style b/c its fits B.Maze style of play.. I was one of the reasons He picked UT b/c of the uptempo play.. I think last season half court set wont work this year either..

I think you are right that a more up-tempo game fits Bobby better than what they tried to do last year. He didn't have enough other guys able to run with him last year. Also, as one of the "new guys", he might not have felt comfortable trying to be a leader on the team. Hopefully, everyone has taken last year's lessons and this pre-season's All-Star snubs to heart and will come out determined to shock the world, but as a TEAM and NOT as a group of individuals determined to BE All-Stars.

Tyler's play last year really does not merit a preseason 1st team. To much falling away from the basket on the inside wanting a foul instead of going strong to the hole and making them call a foul. Prince does need to play a much smarter game, he tries way to many fancy passes, remember the last one in the NCAA game? Both players and most of them for that matter could be much better by just making the right play at the right time!! The ESPN highlights will follow. We will miss Negedu, that man has/had as much energy and upside as anyone, sad story but he is still a VOL and still alive GOD BLESS that..... GO VOLS!!
