The SEC's reprimand club was looking ahead to the next challenge Wednesday, not belaboring old grudges.
Officiating, instant replay and reprimands were a prevailing theme on the SEC coaches teleconference. No further grievances were aired.
Tennessee's Lane Kiffin and Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, both first-year SEC head coaches, said they were moving on to the next game.
Both were reprimanded by commissioner Mike Slive for criticism of officiating in last Saturdays' games.
"I'm really not getting into that,'' Kiffin responded to a question about the SEC's instant replay system. "We're worried about the game this week. We've got to get better. We've got to play better.''
A follow-up question concerned whether Kiffin thought he had been treated "fairly" by the SEC.
"I'm moving on from last week,'' Kiffin said. "I'm not getting into a conversation about it ... whether I feel we have been treated differently, per se, than Alabama and Florida or Nick Saban and Urban Meyer.
"I'm going to stay away from it and get ready for this week. We need to get a win.''
Last Sunday, the day after a 12-10 loss to Alabama, Kiffin had implied Alabama and Florida might have gotten favorable officiating. That earned his second reprimand of 2009.
Mullen's complaints about instant replay in Mississippi State's 29-19 loss to Florida led to his first reprimand.
"I really haven't thought much about it,'' Mullen said. "I've kind of moved on to beating Kentucky now.''
Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, who was reprimanded last week after comments on his team's loss to Florida, was apologetic.
"I obviously made a mistake,'' said Petrino. "It's something I'm not very proud of and something I take very seriously.
"I will make sure it doesn't happen again.''
Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson was not reprimanded despite criticism of the instant replay review failing to overturn an on-field decision in Vandy's 14-10 loss at South Carolina.
"I think it works as well as humanly possible,'' Johnson said. "People are going to make mistakes.
"I'd rather have the opportunity to get a real bad call changed and live with the real close calls where they can't up their mind.''
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is an advocate of instant replay - for now.
"We got some favorable rulings last week and in the past we've had some favorable rulings,'' he said. "So I'm all for the replay.''

I was not sure if Kiff was overplaying the media for the past year until now. He is spot on and playing them just right. Kiffin called slive out without getting busted, just right.
The conference is in danger of being a laughing stock but only if TN, Aub, LSU, Miss, and maybe GA & SC win some bowls while AL and FLA get blistered in their respective bowls. Otherwise the conspiracy is going to work.
The consiracy will work as long as the SEC is head and shoulders above the others. Bottom Line... SEC sold out.

LV that is an excellent idea. why don't you write a little spec and put it on a site for review. It may not make you a lot of money, but it sure could open some important doors for you. Open doors are the key to success.

Because you have done less than Kiffin to earn it.

PS LV. Just look at all the help you would get from the fans. Not just the SEC but fans every where. The Ncaa would love what you're doing.

The other coaches have real complaints. Lane seems to have dreamed this deal up. He is a real embarassment. I mean if he thinks we should have gotten another try at the kick because Mt. Cody took his helmet off...I'm just sayin

anyone concerned that Kiffin may be another rich Rodriguez? These quotes make me nervous..
"We meet, and meet and meet till we can't meet no more. I swear I feel I like I'm in another class. Football Terminology or something. Our coaches do a great job of making us watch film and know our opponent well. I really give it all to the coaches. They drown us in our playbook. It can be mentally tiring, but it's paying off."

I wonder why Bobby Johnson was not reprimanded for criticizing the officials?

It is not the Gators fault it is a down year for Tennessee and Georgia. So why slam the Gators. In reality right now, most fans and coaches in Tennessee are talking way better than we are playing. I know tomorrow we will be better.

wow, hadn't heard that one. is that on one of the gator fan sites? don't bother with a link, i don't visit the others' sites, as a rule. uf's in the rear view mirror, anyway, for +/- 325 days. can't imagine the stepford fans calling for timmy's benching, though...

Because the gator trolls come on this site blowing their horn about how great they are, when in reality they are only marginaly better than an average team!

I think this will be a year that the two top SEC teams are at risk in their bowl games and the lower teams will likely dominate in their bowl games.
If the SEC was working to get the Florida/ Bama game or trying to insure an SEC national champ, it would be difficult to pull off a multi-ref conspiracy to get them to compromise their integrity. Seems unlikely.
I think they just suck and are incompetent.
Voluvr writes:
There has to be a coach appeal on these calls. The Mullin challenge on the Leon Lett play was a travesty to the game of football. There is absolutely NO WAY that any ref with any credibility could rule that way.
Slive needs to say Yes there might have been mistakes and were working to get better. Getting better would be taking that joker of a ref off of replay. This was worse than the Gafney "so called" catch.
You can't just sit back and say "take it." Is there no accountability on the SEC's side to have a fair game?

Witchy Doc, do you intend to treat Slivery with front porch ceremonial dance for All Hallows Eve or provide him the special treat he deserves?
ChattMac writes:
The helmet no-call..It's been 5 days and still we have people bringing up the headline of the issue. The issue was that Bama had one penalty and a few of the ones we got were drive killers. It's not that they were not penalties either, it's that it wasn't called both ways. Overall I think the refs were letting them play, but it appears that they really start putting the opposing team under the microscope and even make blatantly bad calls when the game involves Florida or Bama.
