Tennessee began football practice Wednesday to Lil Wayne's new song "Banned From TV" off the "No Ceiling" release, which references coach Lane Kiffin.
"Smoke weed, talk (expletive) like Coach Kiffin," the Grammy-Award winner rapped.
A previous Lil Wayne hit, "Put Me In The Game," is often heard blaring during practice.
"We're Lil Wayne fans," Kiffin said with his trademark smirk. "We played him a number of times out here before. I guess we're getting a little street cred."
To listen to the song go to the Web site.
Please note, the song contains some explicit lyrics.
Tennessee 69, South Carolina 57 men's…
Tennessee 60, Connecticut 57 men's…
Tennessee 73, Georgia 62 men's…

To KNS: I've been banned for far less than this (getting in to a yelling match with a Bammer fan).
Please remove this explicitly racist remark. It's insulting to our coach, our fan base, and to our team. No excuse for letting this trash hang around.

Amen. Don't know that I'd be thrilled with having myself immortalized in Rap right there with smoking some left-handed taters. That's some "street cred" I can do without...dog.
Wonder if that'll be another secondary violation from Slime?

No, they just had some CRED in Jail! Now, how many players have gone to jail under Kiffin's watch??

Correct me if I'm wrong but CLK had nothing to do with the writing or production of this media event.

well, Tennessee has been the musical melting pot - bluegrass, country, blues, folk, gospel, rock-n-roll, etc.
true story: i went into a little hole in the wall blues bar back in the mid-90's in orlando, florida. we had lost to the gators that afternoon, and to top it off, it was raining like noah's wake-up call. the only people there were me, the bartender, and the musician, a harp player called Rock Bottom. he felt my misery and wailed out a lonesome blues version of Rocky Top on the harmonica, with just me and the bartender as an audience. (thank you, David York, aka Rock Bottom, you were a gentleman and are missed, may you rest in peace in blues heaven).

That's your opinion man. To the younger generation it is awesome. See older music/love music is too soft for today's generation. They want to hear about violance and self arrogance. And this is great tool for UT bc this song is actually everything the young generation looks for. And Lil Wayne is the most popular rapper out there at the moment, and he has appeared of ESPN many times. He even has his own blog on espn and the guy really knows his sports and follows them.
VoL4LiFe86 writes:
People are hilarious. Just because the song mentions weed doesn't mean the coaching staff is going to stop recruiting athletes and start pulling potheads off the streets. lol
Cldvols1 writes:
Let haters say what they want but this kind of music is appealing to a lot of young adults nowadays, like high school recruits. Kiffin has a very good plan as far as recruiting and energizing his ballclub. I love his plan and can't wait to see it's result! GBO
VolFanFtl writes:
Call it what you want - however, that type of music is what the recruits are listening to.
Sorry if it offends your musical sensibilities. If you don't like it, don't listen to it.
Quick, if you hurry, there is a Lawrence Welk marathon on PBS.

Act like he is old fashioned if you want but they are blasting profanity through the loud speakers at a state funded school. If a prayer was sent through those speakers someone's head would roll. The reference in the song may help a small amount but I can't see it impressing parents when they show up on campus with their 5* kid and hear that blasting all over the stadium.
SanFranciscoVol writes:
I think this is great. I'm out here on the West coast and people ask me about Tennessee when they see my Volunteers tie at work, the plates on my car, hear me talk about the Vols.
I think if it's too loud, you're too old. I would not care if Kiffin got his own reality show as long as it brought recruits for us and beat-downs for others. I'm stoked to wear my big orange jacket now.
I can't wait for Spurrier to come to K-Town.

The simple mention of CLK's name in a Lil Wayne song helps a lot in plubicity. It's not going to impress parents. Good thing their kids are the ones that TN is after. I mean I understand that parents go with recruits on visits but kids at that age are not concerned where mom and dad want them to go to school. With the exception of something like his dad, and his grandpa, and his great grandpa played at a certain school. They are going to go where they want to go and this song thing is about publicity. Besides that I really doubt CLK is going to chill and listen to hip hop with a 5* recruit and his parents on an official visit. lol

Don't know how well it will help UT but it was smart on Lil Waynes part. He has got every Vol fan, even the ones that hate hip hop, listening to his song, and probably a lot of other sec fans as well. hmmm... who does this benefit?
BillVol writes:
Just for the sake of accuracy, the lyric reads "Lane," not "Coach."

Lil Wayne is helping knock what little bit of remaining dust off of the Tennessee Football program that CLK and Company have been trying to do that Fulmer and the "Good Ole Boys" let build up.
It is a shame....when I saw Tom Cruise pretending to be Fulmer in that movie....trying to show him how to be hip with the new age teenager....he must of not seen nor heard about it....check out Tom Cruise's dance instruction video for Phil Fulmer:

Lawd, lawd, how times have changed. A Tennessee football coach plays a song at practice that glorifies smoking weed.
How will Eddie Gran, Coach O, et al explain this to a recruit's parents while sitting in their living room?
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.
Sand_Eater_6 writes:
While I personally can't stand rap music, a lot of kids love it. Kiffin is using this as another method to connect with them, and his players are buying into it. Chess match, not checkers!

How fitting. Too bad they didn't mention ole Shooter(Monte), smokin weed and sippin Jack.

You must be smokin weed if you don't think the parents are involved. Most of these kids come froma a one parent home, their mama. Get to know one of them. You will have a whole new attitude about the whole picture.

john1998 writes:
Given the drug/alcohol abuse history of this staff and folks from both sides of Lane's family, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that Kiffin would embrace a thug like this rap singer. It's perfectly consistent with his family background and hiring practices.

John1998, Not everyone is perfect like you. Do you have brothers or sisters? I believe that people can go down the wrong road and still find success. My brother has been in and out of prison. I still love him and I know he tries his best to be a good person. I on the other hand, am a veteran, serving during the first gulf war and now with the Dept. of Defense. And have all I could have dreamed of after growing up poor in east Tenn. Just because you don't agree with someone doesn't give you the right to judge them. It's funny as we age how we judge the younger people like the elders did us when we were kids. I did a lot of stupid things as a kid. Yet I have found success in life. May our Vols find success too. Oh yeah and while you are judging. How many arrests did UT have this year? Ok, come with the comment that it will change. I guess making these kids sit in the front row of class and surprise visits to ensure the kids are doing what they need to arn't helping at all. You want to talk about arrests and drugs? CLK has instilled discipline in a program that had little under saint Fulmer. Fulmer was a nice guy but how many kids were arrested under a coach who had never been arrested?

Obviously, I am not a UT fan, but I really have a hard time seeing that attaching yourself and your program to people like Lil Wayne is good for the program long term. Do you think that successful programs can be built by attracting thugs? It makes me question the integrity of Kiffen and his staff and wonder how far would they go to "win". I am just saying, don't be surprised if you find yourselves on major probations in 3 years.
