Hooker: Jeffrey was best catch in '09 that Vols missed

Full event details »

There's no perfect recruiting class. Yet it will be hard for Tennessee fans not to imagine one this weekend.

Receiver Alshon Jeffery will make his debut in Neyland Stadium about two months after UT coach Lane Kiffin had envisioned it. Kiffin claims that Jeffery told him he was headed to UT; that he had decided to de-commit from Southern California and play for the Vols.

The deal was supposedly done. Despite being an in-state star, South Carolina was thought to be in third place, behind UT and the Trojans in the weeks leading up to National Signing Day.

Credit Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier with getting the last word and pulling out all the stops. Spurrier secured an official visit from Jeffery just days before he signed his letter of intent and reportedly promised him former receiver Sterling Sharpe's retired jersey number.

Never mind that Sharpe declined to allow South Carolina to "unretire" his No. 2 jersey and Jeffery now wears No. 1. The deal was already done.

Hypothetically, that deal did some serious damage to UT's offense for a couple of reasons.

First, Jeffery is the type of big receiver that has had vast success in Kiffin's offense.

With Kiffin's willingness to play freshmen, it's easy to imagine that Jeffery would have the same production - or greater - that he's had at South Carolina. The freshman enters today's game with 24 catches for 443 yards and five touchdowns.

Second, Jeffery - even as a freshman - is the perfect receiver to help out a struggling quarterback. Imagine Jeffery's 6-foot-3 and 217-pound frame and how much leeway it would have given Jonathan Crompton as he struggled earlier this season. That size makes Jeffery tough to cover on a slant and almost impossible to cover on a fade.

The Vols were in the running for another big receiver: Marlon Brown from Memphis. He would seemingly have filled the same void that Jeffery would have. Yet Brown, who signed with Georgia, has only two catches for 15 yards this season.

There are others on South Carolina's roster who could have further bolstered UT's 2009 signing class, but not much:

n Former UT tailback commitment Jarvis Giles has 256 yards on 45 carries but has had some recent off-field issues and was suspended for a game. Moreover, it's doubtful he would have played over Montario Hardesty and Bryce Brown.

n Defensive backs Stephon Gilmore, DeVonte Holloman and D.J. Swearinger have all contributed for South Carolina this season, combining for 54 tackles. Gilmore has been the standout of the group. He has a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Yet it's unclear how much those three would have played at UT. The Vols already had a deep secondary before the 2009 signing class was complete.

Which leaves us with Jeffery. So when you see him sprinting downfield today, allow yourself to imagine what might have been.

Allow yourself to imagine that perfect signing class - if only the Vols had inked Georgia tight end Orson Charles as well.

Alabama Bound: Kiffin celebrated a win over Georgia and the impact it would have in recruiting. Don't expect a similar reaction if the Vols beat Alabama next year.

Kiffin said there are great players in Alabama but the Vols are more focused on Georgia, in particular Atlanta, because it's closer, has produced a high rate of NFL players and has a strong history of sending prospects to UT.

There's also the socioeconomic differences between urban and rural prospects.

"I think that Georgia, you have some more city kids," Kiffin said. "In general in recruiting as you study it over time, city kids are more apt to leave and are not homegrown."

Kiffin said it's tougher to sway an Alabama prospect who has been wearing a Crimson Tide shirt since he was 2 years old. City folk are easier to convince.

"They seem to have traveled more sometimes," Kiffin said, "and are more accepting in leaving and going out."

alshon's a great talent, i agree, but try not to gush over him too much before he plays the Vols. i don't think he is at the level of julio or a.j. (check the videos) and we pretty much throttled both of them. wish we had gotten alshon, but i'm happy with the guys we have and the guys who are committed. maybe we'll miss cobbs, maybe we'll still sign him, who knows. love the heart and fight the Vols have shown this year.

GBO

p.s. sign da'rick.

We've got some good WRs coming in next year, Milton and Ambles and Kiff's not done yet. Combined with last year's class, there's alot of targets for some lucky QB to be firing at.

Link on Volnation to an SI article has Jeffrey not playing in this game. Supposedly he went home Wed. with the flu and hasn't practiced with the team.Do we know if that has changed?

Actually im inclined to believe that even at 3and 4 progress can be seen each and every week also attitudes and disipline are much better now than in past years under Coach Fulmer.Wins and Losses matter I know, but alot can be said and should be said about the direction this program is headed toward

Why are you writing about what might have been.
Next time write about if Tebow had picked UT it would make as much sense.

Give it up vicky. If pf had done a better job recruiting, we would have had a better record now. besides, look at the alabama and florida losses last year compared to this year. not even close! CLK has already proven he's a better coach! go finish packing for loserville, you and foolmer should feel right at home there! GO OLS!!!

GO VOLS!!!

3-4 is disappointing, but what is great to see is the heart, effort, and the fire to compete until the final whistle.. So Duke, as long as they keep it up... It is good enough for me.

Psychology 101. Expectations.

Last year many expected 10-2 or better. Can't get to 10 when you've already lost 4.

This year many expected 7-5 or 8-4. Still doable. But slim margin for error.

Lose this one and you'll be able to hear a pin drop.

Expectations are high for this game.

You have to have enough forsight to see what is about to happen here. Try letting yourself see a little further down the road.

I heard Jeffrey is out tonight. Anyone else?

We aren't missing these guys, our passing game is doing fine now. Besides those guys will be pumping gas in a few years, our guys will play on Sundays.

An interview with Spurrier on ESPN GameDay said Jeffrey WILL play tonight. He had a little upset stomach Wednesday but practiced as usual on Thursday. BTW, Kirk Herbstreit just gave HUGE ups to UT on that show. He said that UT was back, the way they played tough at Florida and Bama with mostly Fulmer's players, and when CLK gets another great class or two, the Vols will be right back in the thick of things. All of the GameDay crew except Corso thought UT would win tonight. Take that, Duke!

Marlon Brown could have been a stud this year for us. Instead, he's been riding the pine at UGA.

Feels pretty darn good to cheer for the Vols. As for CLK recruiting Georgia more heavily than Alabubba, he probably realizes that the likelihood of recruiting a kid from a state largely devoid of teeth and branches on the family tree to come play for a LEGAL football program and get a quality education is kinda like nailing jello to the wall

SECFB - Given how the VOLS beat Alabama up and down the field two weeks ago, I'm sure some Alabama boys will want to play for the VOLS.
