DeMarco Cobbs has switched his commitment from Tennessee to Texas, according to OrangeBloods.com.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound wide receiver from Tulsa (Okla.) Central High School originally committed to Tennessee on Sept. 13.
Cobbs told the Vols’ coaching staff about his change of plans Thursday.
“It wasn't easy at all, but I had to be a man,” Cobbs told OrangeBloods.com. “I committed to them and I didn't want Tennessee to hear about it from anybody else, I wanted them to hear about it from me.”
Tennessee still has commitments from three receivers for the 2010 class: Markeith Ambles from Henry County High School in McDonough, Ga., Ted Meline from Miami North (Fla.) High School and Matt Milton from Mascoutah (Ill.) High School.
UT is recruiting several other receivers, including Chris Dunkley from Pahokee (Fla.) High School.
Dunkley plans to visit UT this weekend.
The Vols received an official visit from receiver Kenny Stills from La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, Calif., on Sept. 11. He could make a decision by early December.
UT has also recruited Kenny Shaw from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla. Shaw has long favored Florida State.
The Vols could continue to pursue receiver Da’Rick Rogers, who’s committed to Georgia. UT recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron visited Calhoun (Ga.) High School earlier this month to show the Vols are still interested in Rogers.

Too bad, he could of been a good recruit for us. I liked how he said he was manning up and tell us before we found out. Not really manning up to tell someone you changed your mind after the fact. Oh well, he probably saw that he can't be as successful in the SEC, so he will go to the Small 12 and become a big fish. Good luck.

Who got excited about losing? Its a rebuilding year, we should have beat Bama, the Florida game wasn't excitement, it was laughter because Florida said they were gonna beat us 60-0 n stuff. The class? No, it won't fall apart, the recruiting has barely started, the best recruiting comes after the season. As for 8-19, that was 1 season as Head Coach of the Raiders, remind me again who has done good at the Raiders lately? As for COLLEGE head coach, 3-4, but soon to be 8-4.

lots can change between now and nsd in february. having said that, look at the competition - moore, jones (1 more year), teague, richardson, rogers (3 more years), ambles, milton, meline (4 more years). i think they're going for 1 more this class too, maybe da'rick will see the orange light?
i think he changed his mind for medical reasons - he's alergic to pine.

Kiffin has a losing record with raiders. Tell me which of the above coaches, or any other coach, would have had any better record with the raiders for the time of Kiffin's tenure as HC there? Name names, smart guy.

Cobbs leaving sucks, but to be honest i was never truly impressed with his highlights that ive seen. i seen him as more of a "slash" players like Nuke. And since we've got Nuke for at least 2-3 more years i think we are fine without him. Da'rick would be a great pck up, but we have three solid WR's Committed. i think we should shift our focus to Offensive Lineman for the rest of this class.. just my opinion.

Come on folks. A little class. Are we going to put down the kid in LaGrange, Georgia who dropped West Virginia because he wanted to be closer to home if he picks us?
Good luck, DeMarco. Thanks for your interest. To be just a TEENAGER, you handled your business like a man.

I can only speak for myself, but I've never been that excited about this kid. Rivals has Cobbs as only running a 4.78 40, which for someone 200 pounds that is considered an athlete, would be down right slow. Maybe he'll be the next great kid out of Oklahoma, but as I said, I don't know that he's all the rave people are making him out to be.

Thats a good point. We need to focus on offensive linemen. I cant say it doesn't hurt he was a big fast wide receiver that definitely would have helped. At least he was man enough to call and tell UT first. Texas is much closer to home and that does still carry weight for many recruits.

I don't know if I speak for everyone, but I would rather have a guy who wants to wear the orange than one that second guesses his decision. So...best of luck to Mr. Cobbs and his new shade of orange. In this day and age, I am impressed that Mr. Cobbs had the Huevos to call our staff and let us know. Most kids just switch and don't say anything is seems. He has earned my respect.
Recruiting will matter when the kids sign the letter of intent - I am confident this staff will sign a solid class.
Don't all you people that put negative posts on here realize (if you really are a TN fan) that it doesn't look good to potential recruits? Try and have some class - we can't get every good recruit and this guy was decent enough to let us know he had changed his mind. You never know, he could still end up wearing TN orange.
sidwalkvol writes:
I am much more interested in, and excited about, what CLK said the other day when he mentioned that "we could not do what we are going to do this signing day without everyone being a recruiter." Words to that effect.
I remember last year when he said UT fans would need to be patient with the assembling of a staff, and that when we saw it we would be pleased. I MEAN!
With two months they assembled a great staff and a great class. I am not worried about this class at all, and especially given they way they have proven they can coach the underperforming talent they inherited.
Man, I love this. Hate to lose a good recruit, but LOTS more out there. We will get more than our share.
VolunteerLifer writes:
The point is that the NFL record DOESN'T MATTER, smart guy. If a coach can be very successful in college though he was a loser in the NFL - AND HERE ARE TWO GREAT EXAMPLES OF THAT - then there's no reason that couldn't happen to Kiffin, too. Can you grasp the concept here?
and you can predict the future? Saying Kiffin won't come close to winning a NC appears to just be wishful thinking on your part, spurred by your intense irrational rage and hatred of all things Lane Kiffin.
Every time you make one of these posts, you remind UT fans of how scared and upset fans of other schools are getting as they learn more about Kiffin, and increasingly see that he will be a success at Tennessee.
So, eat your heart out, jealous boy.

To all concerned,

Apparently, you're not intelligent enough to grasp what "transition year" means: A year in which the team - three fourths of which were not recruited by the current staff - makes a transition from one staff to the next. In this case, the entire staff was turned over. IN A TRANSITION YEAR, THE WON-LOSS RECORD IS NOT THE TOP PRIORITY. Establishing a culture of success, discipline, installation of new offensive and defensive systems, and recruiting are all higher priorities. In UT's case, the next year or two after the transition year will be reconstruction years, where the team will be rebuilt through recruiting and taught how to win games. Kiffin has stated many times that by the third year he'll be rolling. So, given the fantastic job he's done so far, you can take that to the bank, visor boy.
Your fixation on W's and L's in a transition year for a program known to be undergoing reconstruction reveals to us that you aren't a very bright individual, are you, visor boy?

You said it Major. That guy chimes in and then sits back and enjoys his mischef. Or he just changes screennames and then adds to it.
Now back to the topic...Not a major problem guys. It's still October and this staff has until Feb 3 to either change his mind back or find one bigger, faster and stronger to take his place. I have the utmost confidence in the staff's ability to rate these prospects and then go get them. It will be ok. Just wait and see.

"I committed to them [Tennessee]", "...but I had to be a man,...". Does anybody else have a problem with those two phrases in the same sentence? Men don't de-commit, boys do. I am sick to death of this recruiting garbage with early commits. Every school has the same problem and it starts with society treating these kids as if their athletic ability gives them a pass in life to act like spoiled little brats as long as they want. They commit/de-commit/recommit, fail out of school once they arrive, get arrested routinely for drinking/drugs/theft/rape, etc..., and generally misbehave with no real threat of meaningful punishment and no thought to the consequences if they are disciplined. Ridiculous. I don't know why we are so shocked. As I've said before, my son is being recruited at the D-2/D-3 level and we've already had this conversation. If you commit, that's it - you're going there because you said you would. If you fail out, every semester from that point on is on your dime. If you get arrested or disciplined, well, as my dad said, if you were big enough to get into that kind of trouble, you should be big enough to get out. Too bad society in general wants to exempt elite athletes, which my son is not, from the standards they hold everyone else to. Bottom line: kids who won't honor their commitment are not the kinds of folks Kiffin and Company can build the program on. Go Vols!!!
