ASHEVILLE — Backups could slow travel on interstates around Asheville as football fans and befuddled tourists cope with the closure of Interstate 40 near Tennessee.
Traffic for the University of Tennessee-South Carolina football game in Knoxville combined with leaf-season tourists on highways already crowded because of the I-40 rock slide could make for congestion.
“There will be people traveling through who are not familiar with which way to go,” said Trooper Gene Williamson of the N.C. Highway Patrol. “What we would urge everyone to do is try to avoid the interstate and go some other routes.
