Crapton is the worst D1 QB I have ever seen. He eyes his receivers, and still doesn't know how to throw a screen pass.
On a positive note, he must be an amazing practice QB.
tennisvol writes:
Crompton has always been their man at QB. The new freshman at QB will be ready to start and Stephens will be probably be the back up.
TotalPackage1 writes:
If skip passes are considered completions this year then Crompton is going to be an All-American. Or, if he's the same as last year....maybe it's not coaching. By the way, I hope he sets UT, SEC and NCAA records this year; just not expecting it.
Ironcity writes:
Its to early for this
RichmondVol42 writes:
New season, new coach, new offense = clean slate for Crompton AND Stephens.
Lose to UCLA again, however, and all bets are off.
tnbanker_govols writes:
Somebody could sue knoxville.com for libel.....they listed ACCURACY as one of Crompton's strengths. They do know he plays for the University of Tennesee......right?
The fact is that Crompton has thrown nine career passing TDs and nine career interceptions with a career passing completion percentage of 50.6%. He basically completes only half of the passes he throws....hardly a strength.
pdhuff#552644 writes:
I'll take either.
Criteria includes 30 or more points per outing with 2 or less T/O,s.
Deer in the headlight's look is not daunting to a decent defense.
I expect 50 Saturday.
Slurp.
tfortennessee writes:
Crompton was like Mr. Everything coming out of high school, but just hasn't lived up to expectations, or maybe he hasn't been in the right system to shine. I don't know which if either. But I do know that at this point, CLK has put the QB responisbilities squarely upon his shoulders. It is up to the kid to step up to the plate and show what he can do. Let's give this young man a chance.
volfan2002 writes:
Maybe this is Crompton's system since this is his fourth. I look for him to play smart and in control this season.
tfortennessee writes:
I'm with you Doc. More than a little suspicious.
SHAWVOL writes:
i dont think kiffin will let him fail we will see a much better crompton but still not a quality QB i just hope he can somewhat manage the game and complete a few passes to take a little pressure off of the running game if he can do that we should be ok
standfast#211788 writes:
I hope the new guy, Austin Ward, can bring more to the table than this inane rubbish. At some point in the not too distant past, the KNS sports reporters stopped reporting the news and started creating it by "stirring the pot" and inventing controversy. Just because the respondents to this website are either immature and illiterate, or both, does not mean the alleged reporters have to get down on their level. Grantland Rice, and Tom Siler for that matter, will certainly rest easy in their graves tonight.
joehall45 writes:
Crompton is the Bomb, I saw his outstanding performance two years ago against LSU, he played quite well. Fulmer forgot to develop him as a rising leader, and consequently was not ready last year.
Not his fault.
He will show UT nation his skills with a real coaching staff in place.
Both Crompton and Kiffen will have an outstanding year!!
Go Vols!
DennisVols writes:
Both QB's fell victim to poor coaching in an offensive scheme that neither of them was suited to play in last year. I know bad memories are hard to erase before either of them get the opportunity to prove the arm chair QB's wrong but enough of this bashing.
None of us on this or any other thread could compete with either of them. They choose to come to UT and both had other opportunties to play elsewhere and probably be starters before this season.
Laying all the blame on last years failures on either of them is to discount the facts that the line failed to protect our QB's most of the time (more sacks after 2 games than in all of '07), seldom opened up holes for the running game, our running backs played way below their abilities and the receivers with few exceptions ran incorrect routes and dropped as many passes as they caught.
Kiffin and this staff have coached more quality QB's than any of us will ever even know on a personal basis. This is a new year, with a new staff and as of right now a perfect record. If both QB's play this year they both will throw INT's and incomplete passes. The boy wonder Tebow only has a 60% completing rating.
It's Football Time in Tennessee and it is also time to get over last year(complaining about it won't change it or make it better).
Keeping it Real
Go Vols!!!
Munsterlander writes:
Asinine article.
Of course people will have their opinions about one or the other, but the program got the reset it needed and at least for a while the Vol nation needs to be supportive of the personnel we have and the decisions the new coaching staff makes. This article is pointless, divisive, and appears to have been written by a starved-for-attention, gossipy teenage girl. Come on, KNS. You can and should do better than this.

How many points do the Vols need to put up VS Western Kentucky for the average Vol fan to be happy? I have a number in mind and will see how close you guys are to it. Go Vols!!!

And the undermining of the coaching staff begins
tnbanker_govols writes:
Totally agree......while I'm certainly not wild about Crompton, I will be supportive of him. I hope he wins the Heisman to tell you the truth.....but this is really a useless article. Four days before Football Time in Tennessee and this is all you can come up with. I would rather see an article devoted to the great John Ward or something to reminisce about the great traditions of VolNation. How about a final tour of the newly renovated Neyland Stadium?? I can't wait to see the updated facilities myself. Please, give us something besides the Knoxville edition of "The Sun" or "National Enquirer."

Yes, give JC a chance: new season, new coach and a good backfield with depth. Hope to see Nick get some playing time and show his skills. I also hope JC will have the poise and confidence in himself to make good decisions. This game may help with that, considering the opponents over the upcoming weeks.
GreerVol22 writes:
neither one, it takes a smart kid to be a QB. Listen to Peyton talk and then listen to either of these guys talk....and tell me if they are on the same level upstairs....physically there isn't much difference...its what is between the ears that counts.
PennVol writes:
I voted for Crompton because CLK named him the starter and I trust his judgment a little better than mine.
QB_10 (Inactive) writes:
The reason Crompton got the nod, is because if CLK puts Stephens in UT has 1 QB--Crompton and his Mom and Dad would pack up and leave Knoxville--game 6 s the game...because CLK has coddled JC mentally due to his pitty party

I can't bring myself to vote in this poll. No third option.

I used to be one of those that always wanted to give the QB's a chance, even back to the Shaffer/Ainge as freshman. I lose that thought everytime I see how the freshman on other teams out perform UT. I hope whomever saw Shaffer, Ainge, and Crompton as 'great' QB's are no longer with the UT program

i don't know much about nick stephens. all i know is i am not going to worry about tennessee as long as crompton is the qb.

if crompton left, his eligibility would be over, he has already red-shirted and he would have to sit this year out so why would he pack up?

Here's a better question- how would everyone feel about a 24-10 win with Crompton going 11-25 with 1 TD and 2 INT's?
SoddyVol writes:
I saw enough last year. Crompton is a "practice" player but no good on Game day. Let someone else get some game experience starting Saturday. Hope he proves me wrong but I'm not betting on it.
QB_10 (Inactive) writes:
If JC plays well, this all mute point. But he has not and the LSU game is not valid. Here is what JC has not be able to fix in his 5 years at UT:
-Consistently hadnoff ball correctly: Auburn/FLA 08 and Rockin Top reference from Chaney
- Throws dump passes below the waste
- Thros passes where players have to jump or stop routes
- this one you will see in game 2 or 3--his power sweep tosses or pitch on power sweeps are Scarryyyy

If you don't read the paper edition of the KNS, you might not know that this is a recurring feature in the special ENTERTAINMENT section that comes out once a week. Since I don't currently live in the area, I don't know what day that is right now, though the date might be on the piece itself. I surely don't care enough about it to go back and look! This feature RARELY includes athletes and is NOT written by the sports staff. One might question why the link to it was included on the sports site, except that even KNS knows Vol fans are interested in nearly EVERYTHING to do with Vol sports, no matter who wrote it.
