"We really have too much to do here this week finding a way to win to worry about six years down the road."Lane Kiffin
Lane Kiffin is familiar with UCLA as a rival.
The Tennessee coach wouldn't mind seeing things from the Bruins' perspective down the road, though.
Despite Kiffin's ties to Southern California and his plan to restore the Vols to prominence alongside the program he used to be a part of, eventually he won't mind testing his new team against the Trojans on the field.
He's just not trying to do it now against their crosstown enemy.
"Well, I think they (UT officials) already have a contract," Kiffin said. "I think they have a contract with SC six years from now or something like that (which) was already done. I have really not thought about it at all.
"We really have too much to do here this week finding a way to win to worry about six years down the road."
The future schedule appears to be booked with a series with Oklahoma slated to start in 2014, another with Nebraska in 2016 and then Ohio State in 2018. Those dates could all be changed and athletic director Mike Hamilton didn't return a call to the News Sentinel, but either way Kiffin is obviously only focused on the Bruins this week.
He and defensive line coach Ed Orgeron have history with UCLA, and the latter has made clear the Vols won't be hurting for motivation at practice this week. That would have been true even without a new staff after last year's tough overtime loss on the road, but the collective experience against the Bruins should ensure they have UT's full attention.
"(Orgeron's) never been very fond of their colors or their team, I remember a lot of pregame speeches from him," Kiffin said. "It was such a big matchup (with USC). Obviously being 17 miles away (with) the campuses, it's a very big deal and they had been on a big run up until about two years before we got there with a number of wins in a row, and then it turned there for a little bit.
"They're a team that we've had some very good games against and we've had some close games against them. They've always presented us a challenge, and it'll be no different this Saturday."
That would be a dramatic change from last Saturday.
Kiffin compared the 63-7 drubbing of Western Kentucky in the opener to a preseason game in terms of the number of snaps for his starters, so UT is clearly expecting - and hoping for - a stiffer test this week. And Kiffin didn't need to be prompted for a reminder that UCLA can do it, referencing the 2006 upset of the Trojans that knocked them out of the national championship game.
That doesn't mean he's seeking any retribution this week, and he made it clear the Vols aren't really out for revenge for last season, either. And Kiffin also isn't going to use an old rival to compare UT to a program he's chasing.
"Not right now," Kiffin said. "We're a long ways away from (USC).
"We've got one win and they just won something like their (45th) out of (46) home games. We've got a long ways to go for that, so we're not worried about measuring ourselves with them right now."
But when the time comes, the Vols won't be afraid to do it on the field.

I believe Kiffin will have this team focused on UCLA, and only UCLA. Orgeron and him both want to beat UCLA badly.

while watching FSU - Miami tonight, it was pointed out that FSU runs a 1-5-5 defense on third and long plays. That's right, the defense that was joked about on this site as UT struggled to sign DL! 1 DL, 5 linebackers, 5 defensive backs. They are blitzing from everywhere and still have people that can cover!

UCLA- Their strengths are their D-line and Kicker. Those holes we saw against WKU will close quickly and they will tackle better. They are at least 2-3 TD's better than WKU. Everyone is belittling WKU as an opponent but SDSU was 2-8...same as WKU.
TN- Is better coached than last year, playing at home and have a better offense. They are also not playing the 3rd and Chavis and despite last years offensive let downs should have won at UCLA.
I hope for a blow out, as I will be at the game, but I am trying to keep it real. GO VOLS!!!!

They are still testing the board to get use to it and to get the full potential out it. They should have it going good in the next few games. I think the black bar you seen on it will be where the score is posted. Here is a nice pic when they had it going full screen.

I don't think we have seen even close to the whole playbook against wku. We didn't really go down field a whole lot with the deep ball. I dont think this game is going to be as close as people think. I'm looking forward to another blowout. If they are going to rely on throwing the ball 30+ times I look forward to berry breaking the int return record. One or two of our frosh getting picks and ucla never being able to get any momentum. C'mon SDSU put up 277 yards on the bruins while ucla only put up 359 take into comparison wku and sdsu i don't see the little bears breaking 200 yards of total offense and giving up 500+

Typical "national" media. Who reads NYT for the sports? I believe the victory over WKU is more telling than Kiffin lets on. Consider this, WKU is a football program with a lot of history and pride. Since 1924, their first season, no team, has handed them a worse defeat than what we did. WKU has played AL, FL, and GA in the last several years. FLA opened against them in 2007. I don't recall the score but it was no where close to the whipping they took Saturday. We were a few yards away from 70 points. We averaged 3 TDs per quarter for the last 3 quarters. If we would have had the same production in quarter number one (3 TDs) then we would have had 84 points. It could have happened very easily.
Now I know its speculating, but this team is as fired up and focused as I can ever recall. If we have a great showing with UCLA, I will give our VOLS a 50/50 chance with the gators. If we pull that off, Kiffin's pre-season prophetic words will be aired all over ESPN and look for the recruits to line up.
It's great to be a Tennessee VOL!

Norm Chow is a very good offensive coord. It will be interesting to see what schemes they pull. I agree with other posts about EB topping the record.
No one is saying much about thier Defense. I dont now much myself but it seems to me, if they cant stop SDSU easily, they likely will have a bit of trouble stopping constant rotation of TB's. Also hope to see crompton bombing the 50+ yarders.
This game will be the litmus for the rest of the season. If we have a convincing win I'd say 9-3 season. If it is a close game I'll gamble and say 8-4. If we loose i'd say no better then 7-5.
As you all say; "Keeping it real"
"GO VOLS, BEAT THE H3LL OUT OF UCLA"
I like the 9-3 proposal myself!

About the Blabber Bowl.
I hear this BS about Lanes comments from almost every News media. Lets go back to Lanes' coaching introduction, when he stated after beating Fl he'd be singing Rocky Top all night long. He followed that up by saying "Sorry Urban that was Mikes idea." Remember that?If not go back and view the video. Lane actually appeared a little uncomfortable having to make that statement.
Then there is the one that called Urban a cheat. That may well be putting it mild if one considers that Urban was trying to disrupt a kid while the young man was trying to make one of the most important decisions of his life. For the fun of it what would you have called Urban?
That BS about pumping gas for a living. Lane has stated time and again he never made that statement. Also in all the news chatter the kid admitted that Lane did not say such a thing. So why is it always coming up? Supporting slander is not becoming and should be frowned on by any individual writing for the public.
Did Lane lie about Lance Thompson? No!
Now if KNS sports writers have any smarts', I think they do, they'll take up the fight to end this BS about Lane and bring back their own fan base in so doing. If it were Urban or Nick you can bet both the SEC and the NCAA would make an effort to stop the slander.
One last thing. As for Super Steve. Didn't Steve comment first? YES! Steve has had it coming for a lot of years.
So get on it boys, yell your head off in support of Lane and his staff. Do the same for the team wk after wk. Sorry I talk so much, but if I could spell or use correct grammer I'd have been a writer not an engineer.

Actually, at the origin of this expression is a marriage counselor from Italy. He had a client who had moved there from Tennessee and he was preoccupied by Tennessee football (much like most of us). Well...as the story goes his wife complained about his inability to satisfy her in the bedroom and that resulted in sessions with the counselor. The counselor listened intently as the man (His name was gatorzz - odd I know...but nonetheless...his name) explained about how much he loved Tennessee football. The counselor advised him whenever he and his wife got passionate to imagine Tennessee beating the bee-jeebers out of Florida in Gainesville and that would raise his level of emotional excitement with his wife. The counselor advised him to rembember the mantra, "GET HER DONE" which practically applied meant to satisfy his wifes desires through his passion as he imagined the Vols stomping the classless gators into the stinking, smelly swamp. That night as his wife pursued him passionately he was finally able to MORE THAN satisfy her and she heard him scream out loud in his East Tennessee accent, "GIT 'ER DONE" as his passion overwhelmed him, as per the doctors orders. He was so consumed in passion that he didn't even remember that. When she reminded him and thanked him for his fierce engagement from the night before he was quite pleased with himself and began to use that expression freely with his friends as a satisfying way of remembering that memorable night. Now? Well...now it has caught on and no matter how you write it...it still means kick the bee-jeebers out of the classless gators. DOCTORS ORDERS!
