Marsalis Teague shouldn't be this good this early.
Not only is Teague a freshman; he's also a newbie at receiver, having played quarterback at Henry County High School in Paris, Tenn.
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has little experience with such transitions. He recruited receivers at Southern California - not quarterbacks to play receiver.
"We did not transfer any guys like that," Kiffin said, referring to his career at USC. "It tends to be more common in the South. For whatever reason, a lot of high schools put their best player at quarterback."
In California, pro-style offenses are more common, meaning there are more pocket passers. In the South, spread-option attacks have become widespread since Florida became so successful in that type of system with coach Urban Meyer.
Teague had to learn the intricacies of receiver quickly after arriving on campus last summer.
"We've seen Marsalis improve a ton from when he got here to now," Kiffin said.
Teague said he sat back and watched UT's veteran receivers when he arrived on campus. That helped improve his technique. Reading defenses was more natural since he had done it as a quarterback in high school.
"That was kind of easy for me," Teague said.
Despite the transition, Teague was UT's leading receiver last week against Western Kentucky with six catches for 86 yards.
Teague said he received 173 congratulatory messages on his cell phone after the game.
More Motivation: Defensive end Chris Walker said revenge is a motivator as the Vols prepare for UCLA. The Bruins beat UT 27-24 in overtime in Pasadena last season.
"Whenever a team beats you the year before, you want to get some revenge on them," the junior said. "We didn't play very well in the last couple of minutes so we have something to prove, that we can beat a team that beat us last year."
Walker said UT's players lingered on the season-opening loss to UCLA too long last season, especially the way UT faltered in the fourth quarter.
"We have to play for 60 minutes against any team to finish it out," Walker said.
Injury Report: Offensive guard Vladimir Richard did not practice Tuesday. The senior is dealing with a sore Achilles tendon in his left leg. Richard was wearing a brace. Kiffin said he hopes to get Richard on the practice field this week before determining if he can play Saturday.
Center Josh McNeil wasn't wearing shoulder pads but donned cleats and ran less than two weeks after surgery to his knee. Kiffin had said McNeil's career was in serious jeopardy but McNeil said "Hopefully soon" when asked by an onlooker at practice when he might be back.
Pac-10 Powwow: Safety Eric Berry said there's a misconception among some that think the Pac-10 is a soft football conference.
"I think they're a lot more physical than people think," the junior said, "with a good combination of speed, also."
Walker agreed.
"I wouldn't think they were less physical than any other team we played," he said.
Deep D-Ends: Walker said he's surprised by the emergence of UT's defensive ends, six of whom could play Saturday. The depth could also help the Vols next week at Florida.
"Being able to go six deep is something that's really going to be a plus for us when it comes down to being down in Gainesville where it's hot," Walker said.
Hit Him Hard, Sort Of: Berry said he's not sure how to avoid the penalties that haunted defenders in the first week of college football. The NCAA is trying to crack down this year on hits at the shoulders or higher against defenseless players.
"I don't know if you're supposed to hit him low when he jumps . . . I really don't know," Berry said.
Berry said attacking the ball and/or receiver can be tough. Often, some of his hits are created when he realizes he can't intercept the pass at the last second.
"I don't think there's a technique to tackling over the middle," Berry said.
Fully Loaded: Kiffin said he's worked more shotgun plays into his offense than previously in his career.
"It is something that our quarterback is very good at," said Kiffin, who added that the formation also helps his offensive line in certain situations.
Kiffin said UT could run even more shotgun this season, adding that he has gone an entire season without calling it in the past.
Kiffin Cut: UT's coach said he was pleased the Vols were healthy following Saturday's game but added that his team hasn't been tested.
"The thing I'm nervous about is we still haven't played a game," Kiffin said. "Our guys don't know what it's like to play 80 plays in a real game. We've got a big challenge ahead of us.
"It was good to get a lot of guys to play but at the same time we have a lot of work to do. We need to have very physical, intense practices this week to make sure we're ready for a full game."
Scouting Report: Kiffin complimented UCLA redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince, who was 18-of-29 for 176 yards, two interceptions and a touchdown against San Diego State.
Berry said it's important to keep Prince uncomfortable since he's played so little football in college.
"That's very important," Berry said. "We need to keep him out of rhythm and make sure he doesn't get open looks and easy completions. Just need to stay on his case the whole game."
Berry said UCLA's offense looks similar to UT's - both pro-style approaches. Kiffin coached under UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow when the two were at Southern California.
Kiffin said UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price could be a first-round NFL draft pick.
"It's going to be a completely different deal for our center and guards than it was last week," Kiffin said.
Price was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection after registering 14 tackles for a loss in 2008.
Kiffin also said UCLA's special teams will be a test Saturday.
Mahelona Fund: A trust fund has been set up for the survivors of former UT lineman Jesse Mahelona, who was killed Friday in an automobile accident in Hawaii.
Mahelona is survived by wife Brandee Kukita-Mahelona, who is pregnant with their second child. There is also an 18-month-old daughter.
Donations may be sent to the Jesse Mahelona Trust, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, LLC, c/o John Verble, 1111 Northshore Drive, Suite N-160, Knoxville, TN 37919.

Teague is a great catch. I think he has good moves and runs good routes. He really seems to understand the offense.

He didn't play like a freshmen against Western Kentucky, but he will have to work much harder to get off the line against better competition.
Still I believe that he has very good upside and should be good for many years to come.

Nu'kese is fading into the background. Shaky start and nothing noted about him after the game. Could take him some more time to develop.

Tell you guys, Kif needs to look around his own state for talent such as Mr Teague, it is out there....I am proud for this guy as I officiated several of his games over his career at Henry county and he is a class act...he will be an inspiration to Nuke...wait and see....keep putting the points up Kif....going to need them down the road....go vols...

Don't think he will fade too much.

I know Sullins did a great job at center against Western Kentucky, but I hope McNeil can make it back. He has size and experience that Sullins, although a senior, doesn't. You can never have too much depth or experience on the offensive line.
I also would like to see him have an opportunity to run through the T one last time in full gear rather than in just his jersey when we play Vandy the last home game of the season.

I loved that Teague was right behind Hardesty on his big TD run - great to see he can block downfield, as well as catch.

Good article packed with details, but I'm not so sure (spread) option attacks just started in the South since Meyer parted the Mason-Dixon line. Let's not credit him with inventing the game.

You do know we lost to Wyoming under this great coach don't you? Seems like with all those great players we had going to the NFL and all if we had been directed by a real coach we would have won more than one national championship! I think we led in arrests a few of those years you are glorifying too.
Really, I loved and appreciated CPF, but I think Kiffin and Co. will take us to even greater heights. The discipline should show you that. And by the way, you really are not "Da Man" on here or anywhere else.

def. line needs work. they didn't get off their blocks too well. some of the younger def. backs need more work on tackling. linebackers were outstanding. ucla will bring better talent than w. ky. Kiffin is right. this team hasn't been tested yet.

Im a Fulmer supporter too but the fact is he is gone. Im going to support UT no matter who the coach is. Kiffin didnt fire Fulmer so there is no reason to be bitter toward him or the this staff. What I saw last Sat was a prepared football team that did what ot was supposed to. So far Im happy with the product.

Fulmer did great things for the Vols, the university, and the community. However it was time for a change. Never in my life have i seen a recruiting class pan out like this past one. No major injuries, no off field trouble, and they are producing as freshman. Kiffin is doing one heck of a job. We wont know for sure until sat what we might have.

As long as we can make plays on defense, keep that qb's confidence to a minimum, and stop those little dump passes over the middle we should be fine. They ran the mess out of those plays that just call for a short gain over the middle last year and we couldn't stop it. I'm just glad that we have one of the best defensive coordinators in the game to fix that.

Remember, freshmen aren't supposed to be contributors their first year. Freshmen are supposed to be up and down and this is normal for freshman. This young man has the talent and it will prove out in the long run and that's what we want. We don't want to put impossible pressure on these young guys - give them time to develop (without being overly critical) and they will. "GO VOLS"

Giving Fulmer his dues, I agree thar he had some high marks, However, you have failed to mention his inability to win the games against teams such as Georgia, Florida, Bama, not to mention good teams outside the conference. I was very concerned when CLK was hired, but those concerns are not so great now. Reading the comments from the players prior to the season, they all believe in him and his system and coaching staff. He is bringing in some of the best players and coaching up the good players already on the hill. For the first time I can remember in years, there is discipline on this team. Taking nothing away from Fulmer, and his dedication to the university, I am ready to see the big orange play at the same level as the afore mentioned teams. Respect Fulmer and what he accomplished, but open your eyes and be honest. He is gone and it's time to get behind this new staff or get another team to cheer for.

I am from West Tn, and I am very proud of what Teague is doing, but calling him our best receiver might be a bit premature. Don't forget our preaseason starters are injured. Moore did get a couple of of snaps, but not many. Our best receivers are Jones and Moore hands down. Teague is very good and will be great by the time he is done at Tennessee, but it is still Jones and Moore.

Are you sure you didn't mean to write this post about Florida? Two championships in four years will never be duplicated by Florida again. Also, Tebow will be leaving at the end of this year. Tebow was the perfect once in a lifetime QB to run the spread offense. Florida and probably no team will see this type of QB come through the ranks again. After this year I see Florida on a downward spiral without any QB to run their spread offense.
Florida has been losing a lot of recruits to other SEC teams that they used to get in the past. I think part of this, based on comments by recruits; they know Tebow is leaving and they don't want to play in a gimmick offense like the spread. Instead they want to play for proven NFL head coaches who know what is required to play at the next level. Kids are becoming smarter about choosing teams that will help them at the next level and realize that the spread offense won't prepare them for the next level. I think you will see in the next couple of years, Tennessee and other SEC teams running pro style offenses steal more and more of Florida's recruits. I think this year is the beginning of the end of Florida's reign.

I agree with this post from jimbenton. Let the Fulmer thing go? It's time to look at the now and the future for where we're headed. Let's not dwell on the past...good or bad. Let's respect what we've had good and learn lessons from the bad times, but to keep beating the Fulmer drum is just pointless. Everyone needs to get onboard or exit quitely.

Don't give up on Nuke just yet! MOST freshmen struggle in their first college game. I hope UCLA and Florida THINK he isn't much, as that will only increase the shock value when he takes a couple to the house. I ALSO hope Teague keeps up the good work, since freshmen often lack consistency, too.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
Agree strongly! There are at least a good couple dozen guys nearly every year in the state who could play at this level. We don't need ALL of them, and not all of them might qualify academically, but there ARE some around.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
I too would like to see Josh back if he can handle it physically, but there isn't really that much to choose between them in terms of size and strength. Remember that Sullins was reportedly pushing Josh pretty hard even before Josh's most recent injury. CERTAINLY agree that I would love to see him run through the T in uniform one last time if he can't come back to play.
