One sports Web site lists "alien abduction" among its five keys for a Volunteer win over the Gators this Saturday.
The Bleacher Report site says one of the keys to a Vol victory would be:
"In a freak occurrence, visitors from Mars land in Gainesville.
"Their mission; abduct the entire first and second string from the Florida Gators."
That dire? We'll see, but both the loss Saturday against UCLA and the early week focus on No. 1 Florida certainly will have sports talk radio, blogs and sports writers putting the Volunteers and its coaching staff on an extra hot spin cycle.
Here's an early look at the aftermath and looking ahead to the game in Gainesville at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

If I am CLK, I call the most unconventional game I can think of on Saturday. Remember Saban's first game against us? Onside kick 1st play of the game. I say we do the same thing. Considering we will only kick off probably one time the whole game, might as well make it interesting. And while we are at it, the first three offensive possessions we have I would throw deep on every down. That's right. Nine consecutive hail mary's. I mean, who cares if we get beat 90-0 versus 52-0? Lets do it just because we can. Don't run up the middle not even one time the whole game. Let every play be student body sweep right, student body sweep left, screen passes, make the gators run on every play, nothing easy. And here's a concept I haven't seen implemented in a tennessee offense for 30 years, and one I would like CLK to get a grip on: MISDIRECTION. It is the one principle that have allowed teams like Air Force to wreak utter havok on D-1 defenses using talent that even D-II schools don't recruit. I don't care whether it is delayed handoffs, end arounds, flea-flickers, counter-runs, just use it. MISDIRECTION WORKS.
One last thing I would do. Hold and chop block on every play. Yes. Every play. What are the officials going to do? Throw a flag on every play? Every single play? I don't think so. I would blitz every play and hit Tebow every play, I don't care if it is 5 seconds after he throws the ball, or the play is called dead. I'm just saying there is a certain freedom in playing a game you know you have no chance to win. We know we are going down, but just maybe we might take a few of them with us.

I remember the 1985 Sugar Bowl. The mighty Miami Hurricanes, unbeatable, monsters of the football world are playing who? Lowley Tennessee? Why there's no way the Vols should be in this game, it will be a romp, not in the same class, they couldn't even carry Miami's jock straps & so on. Guess who won! It wasn't even that close. We watched the game at a friends bar in Hixon & he was giving away free beer everytime UT scored. He lost his azz that day but didn't mind.
Sometimes the anointed ones stumble & go down with a crash. Just ask Ole Miss. Not saying it will happen, but it could. Just makes me sick to see all these Vol fans throwing in the towel before we play. We have a chance, you have to believe that or you aren't much of a fan. If we loose, so be it.
GO VOLS!!!

Kiffin said he was "looking forward to ... singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year. It will be a blast."
Florida blew the quote up and plastered it around the team's facility during offseason workouts. The signs came down when the Gators began fall practice. Nonetheless, Wilson said Kiffin's comments have been the talk of the team.
"It's all over our locker room," he said. "That's something you don't forget. We just look at it as another thing to back up and just prove him wrong. That's good motivation for us. It's going to be wild. We're definitely getting ready. It's going to be a show."
Florida routs TN--even Vegas puts it at +28 1/2. Big loss & statement for FL. Bet on it.

i just hope CLK dosen't start calling running plays with 8-9 guys on the d-front. it's hard for 6 guys to block 8.
to have any chance we HAVE to pass the ball with success and if he doesn't have the confidence in the qb he either needs to change the qb or run half back passes for hardesty and brown to throw.
any team that wins time of possesion with NO turnovers can win any game.

nice post. your holding comment was interesting to me. when ever i coached a game against a team that was favored i always told my o-line to hold on play side every down and be as discrete as they could. if the ref doesn't call it, fine, do it the whole game. if they did, i'd tell them to do it until they got 3 holding calls and then quit. we never got more than one or two holding calls when doing this and it tipped the playing field our way a little.
Down_The_Field writes:
one last thing. i never had the opportunity to do this but always had it in my mind to tell my punt coverage team to take the penalty and nail the punt returner on a fair catch. this CAN shake up a good returner by either making him shy or mad to the point where he looses his cool. after the first time have the punt coverage team scrape him with a shoulder pad the second time. this wouldn't get an ejection but would keep the punt returner on edge a bit.

The line is Gators by 28.5. I cant ever remember the VOLS being this far down on the chain. Crompton needs to accept he is never going PRO and marked as the worst VOL QB ever. If he can do that and just relax he may produce.
Vol737 writes:
I think some guys just can't transfer it from the practice field to the playing field. College is so much different than high school. Crompton was probably a man among boys in high school playing over there in the NC mountains. Maybe Bray or Scroggins (if he changes his mind and comes to UT) can play as a true freshman and have some success like Barkley at USC. Otherwise, we may have to look toward 2011 as our breakout year.
AlDavisWasRight writes:
We should forfeit. We'll save the embarrassment and injuries and will end up with the same W-L record.
BTW - why did we spend millions to hire a coach with an overall losing record?

mbible1utk#324980 writes:
There is one thing I wish we would do... jailbreak screens...and considering how poor our offensive line did Saturday against UCLA up the middle, it might not be a bad idea because I think we might match up better blocking linebackers.... so why don't we go to shotgun, send Bryce Brown in motion to the slot (empty backfield), and when Florida tries to run right past us, have Bryce Brown settle in right behind the offensive line. To make sure it's effective, tell Crompton he needs about a 7 step drop. If we do that two or three times, Florida will be very regressed on their pass rush, and maybe Crompton will be able to settle down enough to make good throws.
ChatVolFan writes:
Aliens don't have to abduct anyone from the Gators, just JC. He may have the tools, and I certainly don't hate him personally, but there's been too consistant a performance from him in big games.
That said, gotta admire the kids courage. I'd still shake his hand.
Sometimes skills just don't translate into results.
So, at what point do we start Stevens? He'll be here next year and I know we have some good recruits lined up, but they will obviously need a little time to adjust. Not my decision, but the consideration is obvious.
As far as next week, yes, it would be an upset for the Vols to win. I'll put my orange on and cheer as I'm a true fan. Hopefully the Vols come out loose, knowing they have nothing to lose, and they sling it around a little bit and see what stirs up. One play at a time.
Go Vols!
mbible1utk#324980 writes:
and the two things we must do is let the defensive line get well past the line of scrimmage, and Bryce must stay behind it until he gets the ball. That way the offensive line can be downfield blocking to give Bryce Brown a clear shot at the ball.
posivol writes:
Some of this quarterback shortfall is Kiffin’s own doing. When sophomore B.J. Coleman started making noise about transferring in the spring, Kiffin kept his distance. Coleman is now at Chattanooga, where he has thrown for 483 yards in two games.

how we do in Florida will depend heavily on how well we keep Jon Crompton from HURTING us. I don't think Lane emptied the bag of tricks against UCLA or Western Kentucky. But I will say this much, so Gator fans stay off my back.... we'll have to be far more lucky than good to win this one. If Crompton doesn't give the Gators a short field, I think we could hold Florida to 20 points on emotion alone. But to win with that, it's going to take long drives on offense (give the defense some breaks), some turnovers (which Florida gave Troy a few), and probably a score either on defense or special teams. If Crompton doesn't ruin it, I think it'll be a very entertaining game to watch. I just don't see us winning it by out-muscling Florida. We're a recruiting class or two away from that.

Stephens would not be any better, let Crompton play against Florida, go from there after that...no reason to put Nick in against a great Florida team at their house.

Nearly a 30 point underdog! Man - I am sick to my gut thinking that we've had two $2 million per year head coaches in the last year that are that ignornant they cannot see that JC is no SEC QB. He wouldn't start at Carson Newman. Nice kid but no way I am playing him last year, much less this year. Why can't CLK and CPF before him admit they screwed up? Put one of the Nick's in to at least manage a game correctly. Why sacrifice a whole team and your fan base in hopes that JC wakes up before he moves on?

That is a good point in deed. I won't take anything away from Coleman, but UTC needed a QB as well..we will see how well Coleman really is when UTC faces off against Bama later in the season.
As for my Vols...I will always believe in this team. I've grown up watching the Vols..bleed orange and white...and even though I was born in 1981 I still remember the 1985 Sugar Bowl game that was mentioned. I believe this team can win the game if the play calling is there, JC erases the INT's out of his mind, our offence gets on the same page, and our D continues to play physically. Oh yeah our Special Teams needs to do a better job on holding onto the ball imo.
Good luck TN!!

Although not a fan, never said I dislike Tenn. Just wish folks would look at it in a more realistic way. UT will not be a force this year...or next.

For the Vol fans that are out there and a little down..
Urban Meyer in his first year lost to South Carolina, a game they should have won. In the same year, they beat #4 Georgia and #4 Tennessee.... two teams they weren't supposed to beat. They started the year 4-0, including beating #4 Tennessee
Nick Satan...I mean Saban, lost to Louisiana-Monroe, a game they should have won. In the same year, they beat #16 Arkansas and #22 Tennessee...two teams they weren't supposed to beat. In his first game, they beat Western Carolina 52-6, the 52 points being higher than any point total the year before.
Les Miles in his first season lost to Tennessee (the Tennessee 2005 disaster team), a game they should have won. In the same year, they beat Florida, Arizona State, Auburn, and Alabama.... four teams they weren't supposed to beat. Their first game, they beat #15 Arizona State on the road, which gave a lot of hope to the fan base before the loss to Tennessee.
So bear in mind that yes, we lost a game we should have won... but the same thing happened for each of the big three SEC coaches. They get off to a hot start, suffer a disappointing loss, and then beat some teams they shouldn't. It's a necessary lump they all have to take. Lane is recruiting his butt off, and we have the top class so far in the SEC getting ready to come in, and #3 in the country. The signs are there that he can be an excellent coach. If we can get Crompton to stop beating us, we'll be fine. Ride the season out, let's see who we sneak up on and take down. As a Vol fan, I'd love to see it be the Gators. I think Lane will have a bag of tricks ready for the game to make it fun.
