Five Big Things for Tennessee to beat Florida on Saturday:
Heisman Highlights: Tim Tebow is the favorite to win another Heisman Trophy. Just don’t help him clinch it on Sept. 19. Florida’s quarterback is one of the most dynamic players in college football history. The Vols won’t shut him down but they can limit his big plays.
Swamp Fever: It’s going to be hot. It’s going to be humid. It’s going to be hostile. And that’s even when the Gators aren’t doing anything but standing in the huddle. Tennessee’s young pups have never experienced anything like it. They’ve got to deal with it for three-plus hours. Time to stay hydrated and man up.
Competent Crompton: No way to sugarcoat it, UT quarterback Jonathan Crompton must avoid a disastrous day like he had last week against UCLA. He’s got to make plays that give his team a chance to win and not the other guys. The Gators don’t need any help.
Be There, Like Now: Florida’s incredible speed can turn what should be six yards into six points. Whether it’s defense or kick coverage, the Vols have to be where they’re supposed to be and get there in a hurry. One false step, one moment’s hesitation, and it could be adios.
Get Creative: Lane Kiffin second-guessed some of his play calls against UCLA. Now he faces what might be the best defense in the nation. Kiffin will have to outguess the Gators at times to overcome certain match-ups, yet without being too reckless. It’s a fine line.

Establish the run. Win field position. And the defense will help keep it close to half-time. If Crompton can perform up to his abilities, it could be a relatively close game throughout.

part of establishing the run will depend on good composure of the OL, and some smart play design for Crompton - quick throws and screens.

you left out, let the freshmen play. The first wrong route Jones runs, yank him for #10. Rotate the backs, get Oku and BB the ball. God knows they need the experience for the future.

No pressure on the Vols. We are expected to lose, and Florida is so over confidant that they are already talking about an undefeated season. I think this is gonna be closer than most people think.

I refuse to call Florida's defense the best in the nation based on performances against Troy, Charleston Southern, or, even UT. Is it good? Yes, but our secondary is better and we have a better defensive line. I do gieve the edge to Florida's offense though.

The voles have the no.1 defense in the country? Then why does your writer, Strange, in the above article said that Florida might be the best defense in the country. I think that he is trying to fool with the voles.

Hope we can get deep downfield passing early, stretch the D. Then pound the ball. Must get downfield early. Otherwise, they'll stack the box, and JC won't be able to make a play with 8 Gators trying to molest him in the backfield.
Volsrbest writes:
Florida will do everything to stop the run and make us beat them with the pass. If, for some reason, JC is able to withstand the pressure and make some completions, we'll have a ballgame. If not, the Gators must visit Knoxville next year.

Florida has beaten 2 high school teams. We beat a high school team and lost a close one to a JUCO team, but held them to under 200 yards. Advantage Vols!

Absolutly cant let florida get up by more than 17 early or its over..Keep it close till the 4th quarter and ya never know what can happen..but that is alot easier said then done

Defensive advantage that is.

Anyway, before The Sentinel has it's 5 things to beat Florida that is sure to include something as absurd as alien abduction, here are my 5 things to beat Florida.
1. Let the man speak...let Josh McNeil give the pre-game speech to the looker room, his passion for football is unrivaled, this could only help us.
2. Go for broke...we have nothing to lose and everything to gain, onside kick to start the game, trick plays, put Eric in on some offensive plays, whatever it takes, do it.
3. Got milk?...run the ball, and then run it some more, keep our D off the field as much as possible. They can keep the game close for us, give them a chance to breathe.
4. Keep it simple stupid...no need to get too complicated on offense, give John 2 reads max per play, his primary and his check down, anything more than that and we are in trouble.
5. No transplant needed...show your heart, play with passion, have fun out there, and most importantly, do not give up no matter the score.
I think that the vast majority of UT fans are expecting a better product on the field, you may not win this game, but this one isn't a matter of winning or not, but HOW you play.
With all that said...Go Vols!!!

Volunteers, the key is to be extremely physical. Forget the scoreboard. Let the scoreborad be whatever it will be. Play like wild banshees. Hit like natural born killers. Attack them like the razors you are. Hit them so hard they don't want to be in the game. Knock them out and send them to the sidelines woozy. Ring their bells. Launch at them with total abandon and disregard for your body. Physically crush them. Take no prisoners.
Assign someone from the secondary or the LBs on each play - at random - to attack Tebow. Mr. Tebow, meet Mr. Berry and Mr. Rogan. Bloody his nose. Smash his mouth. Wear him down with violent hits.
On offense, play it like the super bowl winning Baltimore Ravens did with their puny offense. Play it safe and don't make mistakes. Let the defense do the talking. Don't try to score unless you have a short field. Let the defense do the scoring.
Best way to keep the ball away from their punt returner is third down quick kicks. Just when Florida is going to sleep from the conservative offense, throw the Nuke Gun in there and shake em up. Just what do we have to lose?
Bottom line - be extremely physical. That's the best chance we have to win this game. Besides, there's a bonus: Their memories of getting the living hell beat out of them physically will increase our chances of beating them in Knoxville in 2010. Start putting it in their minds now just how unpleasant that trip will be a year from now.

vols do have the better d-coach.
charlie strong = average coach in a talent rich state. i could coach flar-duh's defense and keep the job.

Let the BS stop and play the game....Gators will be throwing hay-makers all day long. The Vols will be punching the Gator's gut all day long...You must play the game, talk is cheap.

Special teams- I've yet to hear anybody say this. I wouldn't even kick to B. James. A punt return TD demoralizes the other team and starts a landslide of points. Make somebody other than James beat us

#1 thru #5 At the end of the game score at least 1 more point than the gators

I'm only gonna say one thing...that I bleed orange and white and will never think negative of our team. I've seen some really good posts these past few days and I love it!!
Those pesky gators need to realize that TN is not a joke and come tomorrow, FL will realize that the joke is on them!
GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two problems with that. First, I doubt CSU and Troy have five guys between them who could make UF's three-deep. Second, UT played 1st, 2d, and 3d-teamers throughout the game in various combinations. There were starters playing late, but there were also subs playing early. The fact is, we aren't deep enough to substitute whole teams and we are still figuring out who plays best together. Can't say you might not have a point with your last sentence, but, as CLK said, we'll be good when we're good. We probably don't have enough good ones to go toe-to-toe with the Gators right now, but we WILL show up and one day soon we WILL be better.

I love how not ONE person is giving us Vols a chance. That's OK. Nobody gave us a chance against Florida State. We do pretty well when we are the underdogs. I just have to say, that we beat WK worse than FU beat Charleston Southern. I think WK might be a little better than CS. Secondly, they played Troy in week 2. We played UCLA in week 2 and despite having 4 TO's only lost by 4 pts. Now I think that the Pac 10 is a whole lot better and much more competitive this year. So, I think that if we played Troy or a team like them, like Rice, we probably would have smashed them just as bad or worse than FU beat Troy. So, I think it is annoying for everybody to be crowning FU after beating 2 weak schools (that barely even deserve to be in D1). So, we have a much better chance of winning than everybody thinks.
Here's how we win ....
Run the ball. I would not risk letting Crompton throw any INTS against their D. Run the ball, run the clock, wear down their defense and keep ours fresh. If the final score ends up being like 14-13 or something like that, win or lose, and we rush the ball for 200+ yards, I will be happy. If we keep our defense fresh we have a real good chance of winning. Also, subbing guys can't hurt. Let the freshmen guys get some plays. Keep the legs fresh, especially on offense, and you have a better shot of winning. Plus, it gives the young guys more experience for the next few years. So, run the ball, and substitute often.
My predicted score ... 14 - 13 (win or lose). That means that we are every bit as good as them.

We need 7, not 5, and they are still true today. This is the UT VOL tradition that Lane needs to adapt:
General Robert Neyland's 7 Maxims of Football
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.
