Quarterback for sale — $1 (UT Vols #8).
As of Thursday, there were 235 official members of the Crompton Is Garbage site on Facebook.
Earlier this week, a caller identified as "Pizza Man" labeled Jonathan Crompton "a nut case" on a local radio sports talk show.
Really, now, what have we come to?

I just hope he can keep the ball away from the gators tomorrow, throw the ball into the stands if you have to, just don't throw it to the team in blue.Control the ball and let the defense keep it close.
BuckheadVol1 writes:
He may be a flop of a QB but he does not deserve the treatment he's being given. Critisizing is one thing but destroying this kid is another. Sad to see UT fans resorting to such horrible acts.
CrankE writes:
I don't hate Crompton. I just want to see better play from our QB. (and I know Crompton feels the same)
What's most frustrating is this agonizing from UT's coaching staff (past and present) over Crompton's performance. Fix the problem or go another direction already.
Oh, Climer, Wilson wasn't misguided. Ill-mannered, yes. Misguided, no.
As for fans turning on their own, who can forget the fireronzook.com website that started up IMMEDIATELY after his hiring at UF? The Gators have us beat again in this area, I'm afraid.
Oh no!!, the Gatrolls will probably get mad and want to score a couple of extry TDs for that last slight. Whatever, put it on our tab. Serve it up...if you can.
leboeuf1#253129 writes:
The nut case is Pizza Man and those of his ilk. Coach Kiffin got it right. He is a KID who is trying to do the best he can. Obviously if there was anyone who stood heads and shoulders above him and could do the job better he would be playing. These coaches know what they are doing. Why don't you naysayers give this young man a chance. If I was a 5 star recruit and read these comments ( which they do ) I might think twice before exposing myself to this kind of unacceptable conduct. Hey, lighten up guys and gals and give this young man and his teammates a break.
oldbasshead writes:
It is hard to watch Crompton play badly, but thanks for helping us break our self-centered thinking. When we transfer our own frustrations by calling players and coaches bad things, we need to stop and remember that we have elevated football to a place reserved for God in our lives.
gslaton#227127 writes:
Well, at least he hasn't been called a Nazi, yet. Seriously, every qb UT has had since Peyton has been trashed, even in the winning years. Ainge really caught it from the "fans", but signed up in the pros. Crompton showed in the WKU game that given enough time in the pocket he can find open receivers deep. I realize he forces throws under heavy pressure, but better protection might just be the ticket for him(?). It will only make him worse to trash the kid. He is our qb, it's better to encourage him than kill any confidence he has left. If Stephens were really better, he would have started last year and this year. Hopefully, on Sat, linemen will block, receivers will run the correct routes, and the coaches will call plays that give the Vols the best chance for succcess. Win or lose, it won't be all on one guy....except CLK.
yabadabadoo1026 writes:
acknowleging how disappointing his performance has been, no kid that is trying his best deserves this abuse and hatred.
This board reflects we have the most redneck,no class, hate-filled fans anywhere and any recruit thinking Tenn should rethink it ------no major school fanbase turns on their own as ours do----fullmer, claussen, foster, ainge and on and on. Ours never acknowlege any of the good and always want to hate on the negative-----------if i had a kid getting scholarship offers I wouldnt want him to come here--------the hate here of anyone not perfect will distroy ones self-esteem and confidence for a lifetime----- as great as playing in front of 100,000 and running thru that T is , its not worth it.
Horrible so called fans we got whose lives are so consumed by game outcomes where nothing else matters. I watch every Tenn FB and BB game and support my team but the worst redneck fans anywhere----the rampant hate here is disgraceful----even Kiffen is prob questioning why he came here to be subjected to these impatient, fairweather so called fans

That's cold, really cold. Come on Vol fans, we're stooping to Gator levels with this kind of behavior.
FWBVol writes:
I would imagine a lot of the threats Crompton has received are actually from people who are drunk.
All the guidelines and restrictions in the world on websites and blogs won't keep certain so-called fans from making their derogatory remarks.
Yes, I get ticked off at players and coaches, but I try to keep things in perspective. I want to be civil and try to write things that I wouldn't be ashamed to say in a letter to the editor where I had to sign my name.
The sad thing is the whole mess has filtered down to the high school level and below. Anonymous message boards and the like are making it more difficult for a lot of good newspaper people to do their jobs as more coaches begin to react to them in a negative way.
JoeVols writes:
We can't blame Crompton... He was recruited to play for quarterback for UT... And that's what he is doing... True, he may not be the best, or even good for that matter... But our program apparently saw something in this kid.. This is a prime example of where we have slipped as a program.. For years, Fulmer was trying to find the next Peyton Manning... But then settling for best available... Crompton would've fit in good under Fulmer, throwing screen passes 80% of the time... But he doesn't fit in at all under CLK.. But who else are we going play... Stephens? Richardson? Berry? Myself? I'm out....
DarthVol writes:
I agree with most of whats been said. Especially agree with WDctr. No better way to bury an issue than by highlighting it. For the culprits who've been saying that ridiculous junk...it's a maturity issue. And that has nothing to do with age or position.
But here's another thing I've noticed. The seemingly endless amount of moaning by print, radio and news media about "anonymous" opinions being expressed on blogs, forums and radio shows. Wake up! This is the world in which we live in. You don't like it? Change the format. Quit taking callers. Start regulating the internet. Because as far as I can tell the biggest difference between Climer, Adams, Hyams and the Witch Doctor is...Witch Doctor aint gettin' paid! You want a face/name with an opinion? Start writing checks.
That's all I have to say about that.

The fact that Crompton is not the only QB on the team could have something to do with the anger. We know there is someone on the team that is a little more cool in the pocket on game day. I watched parts of the game again and yes the o-line had some issues. You hear and read from the coaches how great Crompton is and then game day comes around and you wonder is this the same guy they were praising so much?

Look, he's ok. He has ability. His issues last season started when the fans started being a@@ holes. Man, get off his back. It is only game 3, and here you go ripping him. If you want to win, and believe that he doesn't play well when things fall, well...seems logical you'd just support Kiffin and Cromp. Just be a true fan, and support the team. Please don't bring negativity into this GAME. Look at why people hate Vols fans....think about it, you boo your qb? Not me. I'll just support this team and it's coaches, players, and supportive fans. How much you gonna boo him if he goes to swamp and tears UF up passing? They ALL had a bad game last week. This IS still the same team that we all thought was 'awsome' in week one. It is just one week later men. We'll be fine.

true. Cromp is great...just having rough times. He has the ability...just wish 'fans' would support him. Please support the coaches, if they say Cromp is ready, so be it. They are OUR Team. We're here to enjoy the games they play, not make the game bad for them. How can that ever pan out well? Gosh..they are just college kids trying to work hard for each game...while most of us don't really know what is happening...we're not at practice, in film rooms, weight room, running sprints, plays...studying the playbooks, and classes. Don't turn TN into the worse place to play by being jerks and Monday morning QB's. Lets put faith in Kiffin and move forward with Crompton if that's what Kiffin believes. That is all I have to say.

1. this isn't new.
2. this doesn't just happen at tennessee.
doug johnson (who was a gainesville kid) received awful things from the gator faithful as did his family.
it's the way things are and the funny thing is that's the reason a kid comes to a tennesssee or a florida.....because the people at a tennessee or a florida care, maybe too much.
this is the bad end of that spectrum.
Major_Magilicutty writes:
I just want to say this:
A lot of the people on here have said some ridiculously awful things about JC. After the UCLA game, I saw a post where one guy asked for someone to please shoot Crompton.
I would also wager that many of those same people have done little to nothing as far as contributing to the University of Tennessee is concerned.
Yeah, some may be alums, but I doubt many sacrificed their body to the extent which Crompton has, nor have they sacrificed their reputation among their peers, perceived mental competence, or sense of personal safety like he has either.
For a "purported" Vol fan to wish this young man physical harm, to the point where they plead for someone to shoot him (or send him death threats as the case may be), is disgraceful and embarrassing.
Curb your passions people. I love the VOLS as much as the next guy, but in the end it is football. Try to put things in perspective, and realize how much Crompton has put up with and persevered through in order to play for UT. He deserves our respect, even if you don't find him the most capable of Quarterbacks.
Some of you here disgust me, and should be ashamed.
DennisVols writes:
Every fan has a right to be disappointed, to expect more, but there is a line that has been crossed.
No one has a right to inflict harm, threaten someone else just because they did not live, or in this case play up to your expectations.
You want to be mad at someone? Why not be mad at the previous coaching staff(s) that failed to perpare Crompton for the time he would be the starting QB? 4 different offensive schemes before this year and last years was the worst thing that could have happened to any QB.
This team will win as a team and it will lose as a team. Crompton did not do a lot right last week against UCLA, neither did anyone else on the offensive side.
I am disappointed, very disappointed in how Crompton has been developed into UT's starting QB. I am also disappointed in how the talent level was allowed to become so thin on the OL that we now start 2 walk ons. I am disappointed that the adminstration felt that a coach that had given many years of his life to UT as a player/coach should be allowed to stay so long that we are now in this position before they made the change we now have.
However I will not stoop to the childish level of name calling or threating anyone who has chose to come and give their best to UT even if it is not as good as I might expect it to be. The best thing I can do as a fan is support those who made UT their choice and encourage them to improve.
Keeping it Real
Go Vols!!!

Agreed! And all of a sudden when he beats the gators, the sun will be shining again for all the fairweather fans that call themselves Vols! I am a Vol fan and think that this kid is trying as hard as he can to make something great happen, he does it for himself and for the fans, even the ones that treat him like a peice of phooey. I admire him for taking the flack he has , yet he has the mentality to come back and take his lumps , talk to the media and try to lift his team. This guy has an amazing resiliency about him and I hope he does great!

There's no reason for this to turn personal. Besides it's the coach that decides who to put on the field and he gets paid 2 mill to take the heat.

So I have never posted on this site, but I do read quite a few of the stories and posts here. True, Crompton has not performed well since he's had the opportunity to be the #1 QB here. But keep in mind, the guy has been through 4 offensive coordinators since he's been here, all with different offenses and different schemes. Much like Alex Smith in SF, who was an outstanding QB in college, but has failed miserably to produce at the NFL level. If we had to change our jobs/careers every year and learn something new, we'd certainly be less than productive as well. JC doesn't need all of us trashing him. If you think his game performances haven't been punishment enough for him, you are probably sadly mistaken. For what it's worth....

Writing to express your feelings in a public forum in a civil way is acceptable. Writing to defame and humiliate is unacceptable. IF those people really are VOL fans, they are disgusting and vile and should withdraw those statements and ads.
On the flip side, any player must know that you must have the skills to perform your position, especially a high profile one as QB. Surely, everyone and Crompton himself must know that if you can't perform, your head will be on the chopping block. Would it be reasonable for me or anyone else to be president of a company and stay there for 5 years when productivity, value, stock, and morale was down? Heads would roll as they say. Being a 5th year senior mentored by several good coaches with a near zero success rate has got to say something. I personally would not want to continue failure for me or my team and would step aside. Not to be labeled a quitter, but to spare the other team mates the agonizing effects of another dismal year. Who would stay in a position no matter what is was if they couldn't perform their job? Quit or get fired one. I am sure Crompton is a good kid with high values and standards, but let's face it. If you can't cut it, you can't cut it and move on. People will respect you more for that than staying on and sinking an entire ship.

And off the subject while I may! How many people of you in here want to sell espn and Mark May for a dollar? I think if given the chance I would burn that craphole to the ground! Ever, and while I recognize that Kiffin might have said we will sing rocky top all night after beating fla in the swamp I have never seen him back off these comments. Where is the back pedaling? I for one would like to see proof of these comments that fla is better! Until I see these I would hope that mark may could keep his mouth shut and quit acting like the has been he is.

I was at the UCLA game and all of our fans were shouting at the top of their lungs, "Let's go Crompton!" Those are good fans. The 1$ thing on Facebook has almost three hundred people attached while Tennessee has million of fans. First, this could be something written by a non-Vol ... Second, that's a very small fraction of fans so don't confuse that sentiment representing the rest of us because it doesn't. Yeah, Tennessee has a lot of haters within and outside the state. They always want to say the reason is because of things like this but don't be fooled. It isn't. It's because some people like to kick a giant when they are down. And when it comes to college football Tennessee is a giant and we may have been down last year but we got a whole year to play for 2009 and so far it looks much better than last year. Look at the tradition over more than a century and you'll see why we are hated. We are very often on top and if you're not one of us then you might end up hating us. So, anything derogatory get pounced on and that is the biggest complement a team can get from the opposition. Win or lose I will always be a Tennessee Vol fan and I have no reason to hate anyone or any other team because we are the Tennessee Volunteers.
Win or lose tomorrow I will still cheer for our Quarterback through four quarters!

Hi Major- just to concur with you- a poster, Grim1, did indeed write: "somebody PLEASE shoot Crompton. just get him the heck off the team."
