Former UT commitment Hunter is heading to jail

HAMILTON, Ohio - A standout Ohio athlete has been ordered to stay on the sidelines after pleading guilty to felonious assault.

Nineteen-year-old Dwayne "Deejay" Hunter, a one-time commitment to the University of Tennessee, was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 500 hours of community service and five years of probation. Among terms of his probation, Hunter cannot play organized sports.

The former Middletown High School football and track star pleaded guilty in July to felonious assault for shooting a 15-year-old boy twice in the face with a BB gun.

Hunter had been recruited by UT and Big Ten and Big East schools. They backed away after his legal problems surfaced.

Butler County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Nastoff told Hunter his athlete status had given him a sense of entitlement.

"We're going to see who Dwayne Hunter the person is, not who Dwayne Hunter the star athlete is," Nastoff said. "You're 19 years old. And you are standing right here, six inches away from a prison number and the potential to go away to prison for eight years - that's two presidential terms."

With credit for time served, Hunter will be released from jail just before Thanksgiving. He will not serve additional jail time unless he violates any aspect of the conditions of his probation, Nastoff said.

Nastoff told Hunter he must get either a full-time job or enroll in full-time schooling within 30 days upon his release from jail.

Thug made a terrible mistake, throwing away a free education and a chance to play in the pros. No matter what anyone says, 2 shots to the face is no accident.

Sad, though, to be so stupid.

Don't know if that no sports clause would hold up to a legal challenge if the Tide was interested in him.

I'm glad he's not going to be on our team.

This guy is more than a thug, he's a psychopath.

From:

"According to police, Hunter and Terez Terry, 18, were driving in the area of Manchester and Marshall roads when someone fired two shots, hitting the teen twice in the face. The victim was taken to the Atrium Medical Center for treatment."
...
"Detectives said it appears the victim was shot at random."
...
"Hunter has been in trouble with police before. He was arrested in July and charged as a juvenile with aggravated trespassing, assault and criminal damaging after kicking in the door at a residence and assaulting a girl, said Juvenile Detective Fred Shuemake."

It's too bad that the judge couldn't lock him up for the rest of his life, but he'll eventually end up killing someone and get his lifetime free room and board.

a "one time committment" isn't news worthy...why don't you do a background check on the VOLS so you can keep turning your trash writing into a soap opera.

Organized sports could be the only hope for this kid. People can change. Do you remember Hainesworth and the kicking incident? He certainly needs a change of direction. As a society, we can't afford to spend $40,000 a year to keep everyone in jail.

Appears to have a good future as a hit man.

Unless this teaches him a lesson and he turns his life around.....The only organized sports he might be playing could be behind prison bars. For him or any other young talent (thug or not), I hope the lesson here is that he learns by this and gets his life in order and back on the right path. There is life for him other than football and the world does not evolve around that.
