Rhyne Williams' tennis debut with the University of Tennessee was a winner.
The Vols freshman, who's from Knoxville, beat Stetson's Maksim Levanovich, 6-4, 6-2, Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.
Rain played havoc with the tournament schedule, slowing down the schedule and forcing some matches indoors.
Tennessee junior John-Patrick Smith, the tournament's No.1 seed, beat Eugeny Slesarev of Gardner Webb 6-1, 6-0.
Fellow junior Boris Conkic, the fourth seed, beat Middle Tennessee State's Victor Melo, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.
UT's Matteo Fago, advanced to the round of 32 by beating Furman's Chris Motes.
The only Vol playing in the division I bracket to lose was senior Matt Brewer, who was beaten by North Carolina Wilmington's Michael Pereira, 6-2, 6-2.
Meanwhile, UT sophomore Bryan Swartz and redshirt Max Stevens won singles matches at the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., and advanced to the semifinals in doubles.
