Defensive tackle Wes Brown (94) leaves the field after Tennessee fell 23-13 to Florida on Sept. 19, 2009 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Typically, there are no moral victories for college football programs like Tennessee's.

Saturday might have been an exception.

The Volunteers said they were disappointed with a 23-13 loss at Florida on Saturday, but their body language mostly hinted otherwise.

"I can't sit here and tell you that we're happy right now," All-America defensive back Eric Berry said. "But we're on the verge of being really special here, and I think today showed some of that. We're not afraid of anybody, and we're going to keep getting better, so watch out.

Yup W_D, a big difference. This time last year we were saying "It can not get any worse," but it did. This year we are saying "I can see clearly now the rain is gone, ...."

I don't understand why they leave Crompton in if he can't throw the ball. Isn't that what a quarterback is for. With what they are doing now they could just line up a running back at QB and run the wildcat. Is Nick Stephens that bad? They're not going to win many games without throwing down field some.

tomcollins28#554986 writes:

Let's get real here and stop beating our chest! This is a loss and now we're facing another disappointing season. The Gators have 5 straight over us and lead the series. I would prefer to see a winning season before we get too full of ourselves after a loss.

Go Vols!

Madkels writes:

I agree hillbilly, Why hasn't Stephens touched the ball? We know that there is no confidence in Crompton's ability to throw. Why didn't Nick get a shot on that last drive to try and make someting happen? We know we were down by ten with little time left. Nothing to lose...give the kid a shot.

I hate to think that the rest of the season is going to played like yesterday with us playing to keep Crompton from making mistakes and us having no big play threats downfield. Just tells everyone how to beat us. Stop the run...stop the short dink/dunk pass.

Not to mention it's not very exciting and we need to recruit some wide receivers.

Remember we had a shot at Mallet when he transferred, but Loeffler wasn't a good enough coach for Foolmore's staff.

The sad state that Joe Cox is a better QB than Jonathan Crompton says it all.

Good riddance Foolmore.

As much as Iam glad we didn't lose by the typical 30 points to the gators; QB is still the elephant hiding in the corner..It's a bitter pill while watching Mallet;Cox and even Todd put up huge numbers passing..Iam sure the coaching staff is working on the passing game during the week but somethings got to give soon..Looking around the SEC it's no longer a run first; pass on 3rd and long league anymore..

I am hearing people actually say they think UT can make an SEC east run after this respectable showing. That's getting way ahead of ourselves. The fact is the remainder of the schedule after Ohio is likely as tough as any in the country. Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Auburn all top 20 type teams not to mention respectable Arkansas, SC and Kentucky teams. I could see hanging with all of them if we had a down the field passing game. Fact is 13 points is not going to win many games if any in the SEC.

If they can pull out an 8-4 or 7-5 season it will mark a turnaround, a bowl bid and recruiting looks great IF they can get several more O-line players lined up.

I keep hearing "wait until next year", Next year is not looking much better. At best we will have a true freashman QB that has a bright future, far from being ready to compete right away in the SEC. Crompton is by far the worst QB in TN history and the worst playing in the SEC. Nothing personal, just a fact. The coaches have got to give Stephens a chance, there is a good posibility he will be the QB next year. There is no way he can hurt us as much as Crompton has. I like everything Kiffin has done so far with the exception of the QB position. As much as I hate to admit it, I understand why Coleman left now. It is obvious Crompton is going to be the QB no matter how good or bad he plays. Why stay at a school you have no chance to play no matter how good you do?

Clevername writes:

Like the majority here I cannot understand why Kiffin will not give Nick Stevens a chance to play. I thought it was very telling on our second possession of the game when we got a 15 yard penalty which moved the ball back to our 20 yard line and Kiffin called 3 straight running plays rather than risk Crompton throwing any kind of pass downfield. This was obviously a "give up" possession because he knows he can't trust Crompton to throw the ball downfield. And again, on the final drive of the game when we should have been trying to quickly advance the ball downfield because we needed two scores in the final 8 minutes in order to win the game we just ran the ball and burned clock. It just puzzles me why Kiffin would continue to go with a QB that he obviously has no confidence in.

I did have the country boy special at the Cracker Barrell this am. Lot's of UF flags parked at waffle house. While the $$$ are nice, and I was proud of how our team played in the swamp, I just can't figure out why we don't try Setphens. For that matter put KR in the posiiton. He was a High School QB, he can hand off, and run if necessary. I've said it more than once, Crompton is a good guy, tried his best, but If I was him, I'd go to Kiffin, and say "Coach, lets try somebody else, I'll be the backup". I know brighter days are ahead, but I'm just scratching my head on this QB thing.

I havent seen much of this mentioned, but WHY did the clock keep running the last 5 mins of the game when we kept going out of bounds??? Also, all I saw this week was Tenn is YEARS away from competing with Fla, well how bout the media..ESPN shut the heck up! UT isnt years away we are a QB away. And he could be wearing # 17. Does Cromptons parents pay the coaching staff. I know it is said a lot but Crompton has no talant and needs to do us a favor and sit on the bench. Sorry guys, but you have to open your eyes. Well I cant blame the clock, but I can blame Crompton. To add to his bad decisions he was in NO hurry the last drive. Did he not know that he nneded to try and score? I have never seen a team down by 10 with the ball late and let the clock run under ten seconds every play. That may have been Kiffin. I love the staff, but there are some decisions that need to be worked on.

Also, I have read people saying we need WR's. Look at the recruiting list, we have some VERY GOOD ones coming. And the DL is going to be GREAT for a long time. Kiffin will get the talant here. Its not like we dont have any now though.

Come on Kiffin, PLEASE GIVE NICK STEPHENS A CHANCE. Vol fans will support you 98% !! Some idiot will say " Why did he do that, Crompton is the man"

Gyno_American writes:

I am SO proud of our Vols! They went toe to toe with the #1 team in the country and only lost by 10. They are indeed much improved. Also, when you consider the freshmen are making big plays against seasoned UF players that gives me hope for the future games and future recruiting efforts.

Welcome home men. We are proud of you!!!!

VolunteerLifer writes:

The way I see it, the minimum goal this year is to get to a bowl game. The exposure will help the program, the additional practice time would be very valuable to a rebuilding team, and the guys who have suffered the last couple of years could sure use the treat. The question is: Are we more likely to get to that bowl game this year with Crompton or with Stevens?

I can't easily see the answer to that question. Obviously, the coaches figured the answer was Crompton when the season started. And they are invested in him. There are reasons Stevens is the second team QB. Still, it is frustrating when you don't see much improvement in Crompton. He still has no touch on the ball. Even though he's a fifth year senior he cannot drop a ball over a defender to an open receiver, like in the play in which he threw an interception in the 3d qrtr yesterday. On the other hand, if you bring in Stevens, will he take three games to get to the point of competency that Crompton is at now? My guess is that they'll stick with Crompton until they have reason to believe he is damaging our chances of going to a bowl more than Stevens would. In any case, it is a dilemma.

If, however, we lose enough games to remove the bowl from consideration, Stevens should be put in for maximum preparation time for next year.

Either way, I'll support the coaches decisions and the player they choose. I know both quarterbacks are doing their best to prepare and contribute.

GO VOLUNTEERS !!
