Jonathan Crompton has improved from last year. Really. At least a couple of numbers suggest he has.
Crompton's pass-efficiency rating is 113.28, which ranks a lowly 84th in the nation. It is, however, better than his awful 98.13 rating in 2008. Also, his completion percentage in 2009 is 61.6 percent. Nothing wrong with that, especially compared to 51.5 percent in '08.

KNS is just stirring up the pot, and those of you who continue to call for Stephens are like my four year-old granson who continues to ask for things when told 'no'. Barring injury, Crompton is your QB- get over it. I may not like it much either, but it is what it is. Its what we have until next year. Strange is smart with this article, he knows most of you will bite on it. I think their articles get rated by the number of posts or something. All he is doing here is dangling the carrot. You've seen your team, you know who your QB is this year, you've heard CLK say this is your QB, and I don't see him caving to public opinion. Pull for this years team (remember, for better or for worse) and know CLK will have something for us at this position next year.
CRFVols writes:
Agreed. I don't like him as our QB either....but that's who Kiffin's going with. Let's make the most of it. Even if that means drinking...lol.

I don't doubt Crompton is trying his hardest, he's just doesn't have it upstairs where it counts the most.
Ask yourself this. Has there ever been a 5th year senior in the history of college football with his starting experience that has to be handheld as though he was a 5th grader who's new to the game?

He still had two picks playing WKU the weakest team in the NCAA. If not for his TD stats in that game he is at minus zero.
But it's everyone else's fault we can't blame Crompton.

Once upon a time Coach O'Neal of the bball Vols was asked why he didn't go to the bench more when his terrible starters were playing, well, terribly. He said that going to the Vols bench was kind of like going to Blockbuster real late on Saturday night - there just wasn't that much to pick from.
Can adult fans of this year's football Vols doubt that this is the current QB situation? Can there be any doubt that Kiffin is playing the QB who in the staff's judgment gives the team the best chance to win? Any available second stringers and crossover baseball players may be unknown quantities to the fans who only see what they see on gameday, but they are not unknown to the coaches. It is obvious by the playing time freshmen are getting at other positions that this staff knows an upgrade when they see one and value performance over seniority.
Gameplanning to put the outcome in the hands of the team's present playmakers is just smart, and that's all it is. With our limited QB skills, which is smarter - a gameplan that depends on him making the right reads and executing 30 passes, or a gameplan that will call on him seeing what to do and doing it maybe 15 times?
Or think of it this way - our QB is 45 out of 73 with 7 interceptions. And those stats are inflated by the 21/28 against Western Kentucky, and many easily executed passes that are basically extended handoffs. But even so, based on those stats, on a pass play there is a 38% chance something bad will happen (incomplete) and an almost 10% chance something really bad will happen (interception).
Settle in folks - we're going to see two kinds of plays this year: the kind where the QB hands it off and the kind where we hold our breath.
OrangePride writes:
Pass efficiency ratings are overrated. Why? Because they really do not take into consideration the overall effect of a passer on the game. If you are throwing all dink and behind the line passes, you have a high completion score. If you throw an interception late in the game after its already won or lost, that is different than having one intercepted on the 21 yard line of your last gasp, game winning drive. It is this latter category that is most upsetting. JC throws some interceptions that are just killers! Is NS the answer? Well, as the article said, unless you are willing to invest in him for the long haul (and I'm not convinced there is that much difference), then, like it or not, JC will likely stay in the starter's role.....at least thru Georgia. CLK does not believe in "just tinkering" at the QB spot and I think, as a VOL fan, I will just have to get used to that. GO VOLS.

Head Coach: Phil Fulmer vs. Lane Kiffen
Defensive Coordinator: John Chavis vs. Monte Kiffin.
Offensive Coordinator: ? (Again) vs. Jim Chaney
I would keep going but like an ex-girlfriend you start to miss, then you remember all the REASONS YOU BROKE UP and breathe a HUGE sigh of relief that she is gone....you need to do the same about last years staff and realize that NO new QB would make a difference in what was wrong. Also remenber who WOULD NOT be wearing orange this year and playing as true freshmen.
Sit back, relax and follow what the Good Book teaches us (slightly out of context for this but great in concept!)
Philippians 3:13-14: Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

He hasn't thrown the ball as much either, it's sad when freshmen qbs come up from high school and are running circles around 5th year boy. Sad just really sad, he is holding the team back. Yeah he will probably come out and look good this weekend but remember they are playing Ohio not Ohio State.

Cromton is awful, nothing personal, just a fact. I agree with most things Kiffin is doing, but this is not one of them. Even if we get the best QB avaliable next year, he will still be a true freshman in the SEC, probably will not be effective right away. There is a good possibility Stephens will be the quy next year, why not give him a chance? How could he be worse? I understand why Coleman left now. it is obvious there is nothing he could have done to earn the job.

I would think that LK would want to show recruits how good he and his staff are at "coaching people up". If Crompton is his poster child for that ability then I will be supprised if we get any at all and that includes the one that said he would come.

wonder if Scroggins may be changing his mind about committing to USC. He will have 2 experienced QB's to deal with next fall. He would have a better chance with the VOLS to compete for playing time. How 'bout a sports psychologist for JC to help, if it could?

Everone needs to lay off Jonathan Crompton. This is TN were not some no name team everone knows that he's our QB and we need to treat him as such. We don't put our own players down we stand behind them and pick them up when they need us to.

uh..Mike the passes he completes are screens. Your article compares quarterbacks to a guy who can only complete screens. Invest some thought in these
TX_VOL_FAN writes:
I think, it's good that Kiffin wants to stick with Crompton to build confidence. And maybe he "seems" like the better QB between him and Stephens IN PRACTICE. But until you put them both in a REAL game, you will never know. I mean hey it could be like USC. Barkley and Corp were similar in pre-season, but it looks like Barkley is the better QB. Nobody thought they would miss a beat by going with the other guy, but they did. But maybe the U-dubb is better than Ohio State (though it's hard to tell at this point).
Anyways, I think Kiffins comments about ONLY going with Nick if we have a huge lead like we did against WK, which WILL not happen this year bcuz we won't face anymore opponents as weak as WK. I think we should only give Crompton 2 more games to prove himself (Ohio and Auburn). If we lose to Auburn due to JC throwing some INTS, then you might as well pull him and put Nick in and let him at least make an attempt to save the season. BUT that's just NOT going to happen cuz Kiffin is making the same mistake Fulmer made last year.
I just feel bad for Nick. I would transfer if I were him. Bcuz chances are, Kiffin is going to get a great QB recruit this year and play him and Nick won't play his senior year.
Another thing, I'm tired of people saying that they can't wait til the next few years when we'll be contenders again. I say, eff you man. We are contenders THIS year. We played the first 3 games like we should every year. Maybe the UCLA game was pretty bad, BUT we still had a chance to win even after committing 4 TO's. But unfortunately somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. You can't tie anymore. Maybe a few things have to be tweeked and fine-tuned this year, but we still have a chance of winning ALL of the remaining games this season. I'm tired of Vols fans saying 7-5, 6-6, or 5-7 season junk. We CAN still go 10-2 and have a shot at playing in the SEC Championship game. But we will see what happens. I'm hoping for a major turn around in these next few weeks. We just need to find an offense that works, and we find ways to win each game.
Go Vols!!!

Crompton hasn't improved. Yea, his completion percentage is better than last year because the vast majority of his throws are short and safe--within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. All of this TD passes against w. kentucky were very short passes to wide open receivers. Anybody can throw swing passes--and the bottom line is that this team is trying to win games without any real help from its QB, and you see where that has gotten us--1-2 and more losses coming.

He has improved from 5 interceptions in 2008 to 7 in the 1st 3 games of 2009. That is impressive improvement. He is slightly tracking behind pace for the int record.
