MEMPHIS - For those keeping score - and really, who isn't keeping score? - the first big recruiting battle between Josh Pastner of Memphis and Bruce Pearl of Tennessee went to the Tigers.
But now that Pastner has secured Memphis White Station guard Joe Jackson for the 2010 recruiting class, both coaches have turned their attention to Sheffield guard Chris Crawford, who said Thursday his recruitment is essentially a tie between Memphis and Tennessee, with a visit to Mississippi State planned for this weekend.
"I wouldn't mind going to either one, but it's a tossup between both," Crawford said. "With Mississippi State, I want to take the visit and see how it really is. The visit will (determine) what I think about them."
Though Crawford said he might know what direction he's leaning after the Mississippi State visit, his decision might not be so simple.
A relatively unknown player earlier this year, the 6-4 guard made a national reputation on the AAU circuit and is Rivals.com's No. 66-ranked player in the 2010 class. Once it became clear to Tennessee that Jackson would likely choose the Tigers, Pearl's staff focused its attention on Crawford and got him to Knoxville for an official visit two weeks ago.
Memphis has essentially been trying to make up ground, and Pastner is pushing hard to bring Crawford along with Jackson, swingman Will Barton and point guard Antonio Barton.
Though Pastner wants to add at least one more guard for next season - and perhaps even two - the case against Memphis has been fairly easy to make for rival recruiters. Jackson and Will Barton are among the highest-rated players in the country at their positions, and Memphis will likely still have Elliot Williams in 2010-11.
Still, Crawford admits he feels the tug of playing at home.
"There's a lot of love down here," he said. "(Pastner) told me I have to work hard for everything and nothing is given. He just said you have to compete in practice and go at it with each other in practice and you can earn your minutes."
Although Tennessee also has several starting-quality guards - the Vols have commitments from Trae Golden and Jordan McRae and will likely return Cam Tatum and Scotty Hopson - the essence of its pitch to Crawford has been that he could come in immediately and be one of Tennessee's premier players.
In fact, Crawford said playing time has been the root of some rather pronounced negative recruiting between the Tennessee and Mississippi State coaching staffs.
"I ain't heard Memphis do it," Crawford said. "Mississippi State, they talk about Tennessee, saying they play like a 10-man rotation and you won't get all the minutes (they are promising). With Mississippi State, they're saying I can come in and get about 20-something minutes a game. Tennessee, they're like, it's boring down there at Mississippi State."

...and they will be great for 5-6 years. Calipari will get them to the NC game and choke again. NCAA will learn of major violations and Calipari will be out. That's his MO. Enjoy while you can Cats.

I don't know why but I just don't like Calipari. Should I feel bad for that? Naaaa go vols!!

Don't like Kentucky much either!!
GO UT! The people that matter know where UT is.
(hint-it ain't in Austin) 'wish BBall was here.

First of all, I hope nothing bad happens to Kentucky as far as violations because it just isn't much fun without alot of good teams in the SEC. Secondly, where else is Calipari going to go? Kentucky is a dream job. He will probably be content to stay there for the long haul and be a revered coach that goes down in history as one of the greatest in Kentucky basketball. I doubt Calipari gets caught doing anything. I think he knows he barely escaped twice now and isn't going to risk it again. He knows how to play the dirty recruiting game without getting caught. Go Vols

Why is it that it has to be ribs for him too stay home? Interesting spin. I see where you were going. Memphis BBQ is the best, forget what you heard about KC BBQ. I think he ends up some place else other than UT or UM.

Good post. As much as we love to hate him, Calapari has always been at his best in handling the personalities of players. As a bench coach and X-and-O guy, he has some of CBP's deficiencies but is a better recruiter. As long as he can stay out of NCAA jail, he will be a major force to reckon with at UK.

Pearl can't recruit Memphis. If he gets this kid it will be major notch in his belt. Adonis Thomas out of Melrose is the kid he needs (2011).

As far as Kentucky and Cal go, he shouldnt get in any trouble because Kentucky basically recruits itself. He has been a pretty good coach as far as winning goes, even though his ethics may be a bit shady. He should do pretty well there if he can get all of those one and doners to play together. UT should have their number this year because of experience but next year will be a lot tougher as the Vols will be really young and if Scotty doesnt return then the challenge will be two fold. The Vols should be able to get some of these top guys, we seem to be on the short end of these recruiting battles lately. Its really hard to explain because UT is a top ten team, with perhaps the newest and best facilities in the southeast. Maybe we need a new assistant to recruit... im just sayin...

I can understand what you are saying, however, it will be very interesting to see how UK is playing come February.
BTW Cat, classy comment you made about Negadu.
He needs all the support he can get, even from the Big Blue Nation.
Also, if you are in the Lexington area, let me know and maybe we can do lunch and yak about UT-UK, I'll buy

It will come down to whether Crawford believes he can play with the load of talent Memphis has at the point guard and wing positions. Jackson & Barton will be McDonald All-Americans just as E. Williams was. These three guys are going to be special. Crawford could fall in Pearl's lap, UT's need is just greater than Memphis. Kids want playing time, it is just that simple.
Adonis Thomas (class of 2011) has a lot of time to enjoy the recruiting process. Word is he loves Memphis and Pastner. It will be shocking for him to end up somewhere else.
Really scary news about Negadu. Memphis fans all wish him a speedy recovery! He is a fine young man from all I have read about him. We all have to remember these are college kids first, athletics second. Get well soon big guy!

If Brucie gets Chris it'd be because Memphis is loaded in the backcourt for nxt year, plain & simple. Has nothing to do with Bruce out-recruiting Memphis or Pastner. I've made this statement in a previous thread and I'm sure you guys know this to be the truth.
Anways, Chris will be announcing tomorrow... if he does choose Memphis over UT who will obviously have mins availabe from day one then that too says alot about the brand of Memphis, the NBA school...
