When You're Strange: Monday Vols blog (after practice)

The weather was so perfect Monday afternoon, I almost hated to see practice end after less than an hour. Almost.

The first option considered Monday to fill Nick Reveiz' vacancy was Savion Frazier, who laughed and said he last played middle linebacker in seventh grade. But Lane Kiffin is looking at the big picture, that there are at least eight games left to play, and he wants his three best linebackers on the field. Frazier has been backing up Rico McCoy but, minus Reveiz, he is probably the third-best behind McCoy and LaMarcus Thompson. Unless it's Greg King, the freshman who started for the injured Thompson against Ohio.

Last year Tennessee at this time was 32 points from being undefeated; this year it's 16. Last year there were a lot of mental mistakes and this year not as many. Last year there was a blow-out loss by this time, this year it's been close in every game. The discipline and confidence is improved and the play calling is far more balanced (and we can run the ball). This will take time, but what's key is that fundamentals are significantly improved.

Wonder how Fla's practice is going. How 'bout it, Trolls? For those who don't think Urby is nervous, how about him playing Tebow after posting 31 1st Qtr. points against Ky? He had to put up BIG points after the critcism he got from our game. He should have been giving the #2 qb some reps anyway. Tebow is gone after this year.

We know that you don’t know what you’re talking about!!

1. Phil took the program to new heights… and new lows. He was losing control of the program.
2. Way better shape? Are you kidding? Didn’t GA have David Greene at QB when Richt came in? And didn’t Creyer have Heisman candidate Chris Leak?
3. WRONG!!! The mock drafts I’ve seen for 2010 have only 1 player being drafted… and it’s you-know-who. I’m sure we’ll have a couple others going in later rounds, but nobody I’ve seen is predicting that far ahead at this point.
4. They’ve taken the best defensive player and put him in a system that’s better for the TEAM. Perhaps being a Florida Tebow panty ‘I’m going to represent the entire offense’ fan, you’ve forgotten the concept of a team.
5. Post season awards… yeah… we have a staggering 5. All of whom are extreme long shots (except EB) and one of whom is still trying to practice even though his career has been deemed over.
6. Where do you get this drivel?!?! Kids left because of disciplinary issues, were PO’d about the departure of Fulmer, or couldn’t handle competing for their positions.
7. Since you seem to know so much, who were they?
8. That tends to happen when you have a change in coaching staffs. Oh yeah, didn’t our class still rank ahead of Florida even with a coaching change?!?
9. Oku, Richardson, and Teague (just to name a few) are other freshman who have seen playing time. If I had the time to look, I’m sure more freshman have contributed thus far
10. Again, tends to happen when you’re rebuilding
11. He’s also a hell of a recruiter, hired an amazing supporting staff, re-energized the fan base, and has a plan for success.
12. Funny how you think we’re stupid when your so-called facts only display your ignorance!

I agree we need some boys to step up and fill the void at LB, however the part about the QB? I know since the WR's are inexperienced that it has an effect on the QB play but a good signal caller won't have the stats JC has. Auburn's pretty good but haven't played in an atmosphere like Neyland, nor a defense like UT's. Hopefully the D has a game this saturday like they played at Floriduh. This would be a really good win for UT and its fans, especially the coaching staff who are under some scrutiny. I have faith they will and win 24-21 in a great matchup on ESPN Primetime! Go Vols!!!

Here are some facts:

1. UT limits the great Tim Tebow to only 115 yards passing. Meyer afraid to pass due to undeveloped Florida wideouts. Forces Tim Tebow to run the ball 24 times due to inadequate/unprepared wide receivers. (Recruits see if you don't play QB at Florida you will rarely receive the ball and you spend you time blocking for the QB.)
2. Eric Berry intercepts Tim Tebow deep in Florda territory.
3. Eric Berry voted Player of the Game at Florida over Tim Tebow.
4. Eric Berry hit Tim Tebow so hard, Tim fell back and staggered getting up. Later screamed profanities at his receivers on National TV for everyone to see.
5. Tim Tebow acknowledges after the game Eric Berry is a great player and Monte a great coach. Monte had a great gameplan to slow Florida's spread offense.
6. Tim Tebow admits Eric Berry threw one of the hardest hits he has received in his college career.

These are the cold hard facts. Just get over the fact, Meyer's Florida's spread was out coached by Monte Kiffin's defense. Everyone knows based on prior Florida past, that their offense played poorly against UT. Tim Tebow has said as much in Interviews. Atleast listen to Tim Tebow, he will tell you Florida had a bad game and he even mentions Monte and Eric as the main reasons for Florida's poor play.

1. Because 1998 was our first national championship? Really? Nope it wasn't our first but good try.
2. Georgia was 8-3 the year before Richt. Florida was 7-4 when Urban came in. Plus Zook was an excellent recruiter he just couldn't coach, so they had all that talent. Alabama was 6-6 but had John Parker Wilson still at QB when Saban came.
3. Did my 5 year old son do the mock drafts you have been looking at?
4. Just another player? Did you see the Florida game at all?
5. Again did my son compose the list?
6. No arrests, I repeat no arrests since CLK took over.
7. Who are these OL you speak of? Names? I didn't think so.
8. It was a #23 class before CLK arrived.
9. Name the four freshman running backs that are better that have a stud senior in front of them.
10. I just don't believe you. We sold more season tickets than last year before the season even started.

first off, crompton is the better of the two, Cutcliff saw it, Clawson saw, Cheney sees it.

he may be the worst we have had in twenty years...which is to say he is as not as good as jeff francis, andy kelly, heath shuler, jerry colguit, peyton manning, tee martin, casey clausen, eric ainge...

i agree he is not...maybe he is as good as a.j. suggs, but maybe not; he's not as good as brent shaeffer or brandon stewart either...he's probably not as poised as todd helton...but my god...look at those names...how fortunate have we been since the days randy sanders was our back-up...randy got one start...boston college...interception, first play...in fact that is where i put jonathan, below the others, above sanders.

but he is the best we have right now...and kiffin, being a qb himself, has some understanding of this simple fact...

when you win, they see the qb and celebrate...when you lose, the see the qb and blame...why? noboby has the ball in their hands more, and most people don't know anymore about footbal than where the ball is and who has it.

and yes, wheter you buy it or not, if we had the kind of reciever play some of those afore mentioned qb's had, crompton might not look so bad...but we can't know that because the supporting staff of players isn't playing up to the level they did during those years, nor do they have the talent.

everybody has a part to play, and crompton failures are not all in his control.

second,
stephens was 'scared' during that alablama game last year and did not handle adversity well at all, I mean at all - where as Crompton sucked it up, re-earned the job and helped manage wins the final two games of the season.

third, he prepares like a coach...he may not play that well at times, but as a coach, there is a fine line between being comptetive and not being competitive when talent is relatively equal.

preparedeness ensures a chance to be competetive - and i believe this team has been very competitive, even against the best in the nation - a lack of preperation can be overcome with skill sometimes, but its too variable to stake your livelihood on...especially when the person is only 20.

i'd take my chance with the one who is most serious about improving and preparing.

from all accounts, this is crompton hands down...stephens talent may be similar, but it's certainly not exceptionally greater...sometime its still the smart move to go with what you brought to the dance...this is one of them.

we should be circling wagons around crompton, not burning him down...fact is, he's the best we have and until that changes he will play...

of course thereis the alternative theories...the coaches don't really 'want' to win...the coaches don't know what is best...fans, with no credentials or merit, know what is best for winning football in the SEC.

That is the one that I think dominates on this blog.
