UT Board reports cash surplus

The University of Tennessee Athletics Board announced a $102.45 million budget for 2009-10 and a $2.7 million cash surplus at its spring meeting Saturday.

The athletic department anticipates an additional surplus for Fiscal Year 2010 after giving $6.8 million in direct cash support to the university.

The board approved a recommendation to shift the UTAD's reporting responsibility from the UT system to the Knoxville campus. That recommendation will be sent to the Board of Trustees at its June meeting.

Facility construction and improvements were discussed.

The Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center will expand by two courts.

A feasibility study on an indoor track/volleyball facility has been completed. The project will get underway on Leinart Lane near the soccer and softball stadiums after funds are raised.

The improvements to practice holes and greens at the golf facility were completed in February. The designing and planning for a clubhouse is the next project.

I agree it will be tough in football the next few years. But I'm always a Vol. I remember those tough first few years with Johnny Majors. But we came back. We'll do it again.
