Wednesday marks the first day of the spring signing period for college basketball, but Tennessee isn't expected to add any names to its class of 2010 at this point.
Coach Bruce Pearl confirmed UT is still recruiting Josh Selby, a one-time verbal commitment to the program, but did not elaborate on account of NCAA restrictions.
Selby, a consensus top-10 recruit from Baltimore, is expected to announce his decision at halftime of the Jordan Classic on Saturday at New York City's Madison Square Garden.
Selby also is considering Kansas, Connecticut and Arizona.
UT has signed forward Tobias Harris (Half Hollows West, N.Y., High School), and guards Jordan McRae (Liberty County, Ga., High) and Trae Golden (McEachern, Ga., High).
Forward Jeronne Maymon transferred to the Vols from Marquette at the start of the spring semester and will be eligible next season.
Maymon played high school basketball in Madison, Wis., and was the state's Mr. Basketball award winner and ranked in the top 50 of 2009 recruits.
Pearl on ESPN: Pearl will be all over ESPN programming on Wednesday.
A list of Pearl's scheduled appearances: 10:50 a.m., ESPN2: First Take; 11:40 a.m., ESPN Radio/ESPNU: The Herd with Colin Cowherd; 1 p.m., ESPN Rise: (on the basketball court); 1:30 p.m., ESPN.com: SportsCenter.com; 2:10 p.m., ESPNEWS: Hot List; 2:40 p.m., ESPN Radio: 710 ESPN in Los Angeles; 3 p.m., ESPNU: Signing Day Special; 3:40 p.m., ESPN Radio: Scott Van Pelt Show; 4 p.m., ESPN Radio: 1250 ESPN in Pittsburgh.
"I'll spend the day up there,'' Pearl said. "You want to keep the school's name out there, and I'm sure I'll be asked to comment on many relevant basketball issues.''

Whether we get Selby or not we will have a great class coming in this coming year. Way to go Bruce. Go Vols!!

Hamilton may have failed on some, but he sure hit a home run with the Pearl hire and from all indications some of his best teams are still to come.
Wheatgerm writes:
According to Rivals.com, Selby has "medium" interest in Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas and Kentucky. Only "low" interest in Tennessee. And wouldn't you agree that Rivals.com is a more independent, less wishful source? So it's fair to say UT is still after Selby, but that's about it. We'll know soon enough how it all turns out.

Doubtful an Adidas school will get a commitment at a Jordan event.

I am concerned about one thing for next year: we only have Brian Williams as a true big man. If he gets in foul trouble who do we turn to? Otherwise looks good for next couple of years.....

C'mon Cat. Wall shared the spotlight and he did okay.
rclarkvols#224537 writes:
The rivals site has not updated in a while. Selby never visited Kentucky and he is the one who contacted Tennessee to say he was still interested. I'd consider that more than low interest. i believe it's Tennesse or Kansas and since Tennessee is closer to Baltimore I like our chances.
gwtvol85 writes:
I don't believe the Vols will secure Selby, but I could be pleasantly wrong. However, the fact that CPB is on ESPN via different venues all day long helps to continue to promote the program and ensures that sophomores, juniors, and seniors to be are taking notice of the continuity of the program. He is a great ambassador for the University and his ability to communicate will continue to sustain the hoops program at UT.

I have to agree with Cat. Oku decommitted due to a coaching change and had to be re-recruited, which is totally normal. Nothing changed with TN coaching staff on the Selby deal. It is rare people decommit in basketball and go back to their original committment. But, these are 17-18 year old kids and you never know. Xavier Henry left Kansas after his only season and he didn't have a spectacular year. But he has Kansas on his uniform and will get drafted. I think Selby could do the same thing there. If he went TN and has a subpar freshman season, he is called the next Scotty Hopson.

No doubt about it...we are a basketball school now. Thanks FOOLmore...your legacy continues.
MusicCityVol writes:
Unfortunately you are probably exactly right. For anyone who hasn't followed this recruitment closely...Selby's decommitment has been scrutinized by those who believe Worldwide Wes is in the kids ear. Worldwide Wes is tied to Nike and to a lesser degree Reebok. He has been quoted as saying some negative things about Adidas and Adidas schools. The more frightening part is that Calipari has WWW in his back pocket. He funneled both Rose and Evans to Memphis. I didn't really know who this guy was but after the rumors that he was connected to Selby I started looking on the internet for info on the guy. Here are a couple informative pieces. The GQ article is pretty scarey.

Interesting if he disses adidas and promotes Reebok, since I believe the former now owns the latter.

You forgot to mention the part about Haslam and Stokely thumb-wrestling over whether to call Ernie Grunfeld or Bernard King to pick the new hire. It was lucky that Thornton lost his thumb-wrestling match to both Haslam and Stokely-- he wanted to call Allan Houston to get HIM to pick the new coach, and it was well-known that Allan planned to choose his dad to coach the Vols again.
Also, Phil Fulmer said that if he were AD at the time, he would have sent Buzz to Kentucky and hired Cutcliffe to be the basketball coach.

Good point. Does seem strange. The GQ article was from 07 but a quick google search said that Adidas aquired Reebok in 05. Not sure whats up with that.
VolJunkie writes:
Interesting ... but I don't care if someone clicked the heels of their ruby Adidas together three times and said "there's no place like UT, there's no place like UT", just glad to have CBP leading the program. Would like to see us lock him up like Butler did their coach.
Go Vols!

I'd rather not have a one and done kid. Does Selby have a desire to pursue bio-medical nuclear engineering or thermal intrusive plate tectonics?

Well, if we don't get Selby, maybe we could follow the Kentucky model of recruiting: Fire our present head coach, then hire the coach of the Memphis Tigers on the proviso that he bring his number one recruiting class with him, and combine that with our recruiting class to create an instant top five team. Crime does pay, huh?
Alwaysavol writes:
Yet we got as far in the tournament as they did. The big name coach and all the big name recruits did not result in a national championship or even a Final Four appearance.
volsunited writes:
So we should take the word of somebody who cant even spell the name right! Its Tobias! Im sure u got an inside track on things! Please get a life
1vavolfan writes:
You are probably right. I thought Selby would go to Kentucky but I don't think he wants to share the spotlight with Knight. Kansas lost Collins and Henry so I still think Kansas is where he will wind up. It would be awesome if we did get him, he looked great in the McDonald's game.
osbymartin#581730 writes:
He's referring to Torrel Harris Tobias' father. According to BOK, he is a psycho dad. BOK has to be a jilted Syracuse fan and hates CBP for signing the top player in New York. So apparently, he thinks CBP paid to get him.. Syracuse fans are great though, they have trashed Harris since he signed with UT and they have pretty much ran his talented little brother right out of even considering Syracuse.
RockyTopRenegade writes:
Cal did himself a favor anyway, one more vacated Final Four would start to look like a pattern.

Wouldn't it be great for Selby to come to UT..And SEC fans could watch Selby vs. Knight 2 maybe 3 times next season!

Rich, I travel the country with my job and I can assure you that Rednecks are not confined to the South. Got them everywhere I go. Los Angeles, Chicago (plenty of them), etc. But, oh my gosh, have you ever been to New Jersey? Plenty of folks in that state make Bammers look positively cosmopolitan.
Colliervol writes:
Osby, I doubt that gentleman (and I use the term loosely) is a jilted Syracuse fan. But most certainly, he is no Vol fan. And therefore quite irrelevant. After BP made him look like a fool on the coaching front, he now resorts to the cry of losers everywhere: "He's cheating!" Well, if they ain't bringing the Smarmy One in Lexington to justice, you can forget about anybody else. The NCAA has basically lost control of this whole recruiting thing anyway. So many gray areas, they can't (or won't) police it.
My guess is that he has issues with Bruce's "background" if you know what I'm saying. Either that or he/she is the ex-Mrs. Pearl. (In that case, "jilted" might apply.) Either way, his/her opinion is of no consequence to true UT fans. Anybody that doesn't think BP is a whale of a coach and great for this program is so far out in left field that they don't deserve a response. He has proven his worth unlike some coaches I can name.
Colliervol writes:
As far as Selby goes, my feelings are well known on one-and-done's. If I'm going to be consistent, I have to say that I don't want him. I guess I could say that we don't do it very often and everybody can make an exception every now and then. But I can't do it. I would rather win with kids that commit to being here at least a couple of years.
I think it's the worst thing that the NCAA ever allowed and they should get rid of it immediately. They've allowed the street agents and AAU "coaches" to broker these kids to the highest bidder and it's a sham. The kids have no loyalty to the school whatsoever. Sorry for the soapbox but I feel strongly about it. In the end, I'm sure BP is going to do what's necessary to keep the program competitive. And that probably means trying to get kids like Selby every now and then. (But at least he's not gambling his entire program on them, unlike somebody just to the north of Knoxville....)

WOW, You made my brain hurt with all your rambling and man crush on Fulmer.
I still think Majors had more exciting teams.
And Majors rebuilt UT football not Fulmer. If you think different you might be an idiot but that would be too rude to say.
osbymartin#581730 writes:
Well it was an assumption since he has on a few occasions made references to their coach. Not any other coaches just Boeheim and how great he is and how CBP is nothing..He thinks CBP bought Harris and talks bad about the young man's father, calling him a psycho dad. They have all but ran his little brother right out of any chance of even looking at Syracuse. Not very smart! UT has offered him already along with a few other schools. I could be wrong about his team affiliation but I, like you, am pretty positive he isn't a Vol fan!

I believe with him being the lone real big man next year he will have foul trouble in every game. If they are to make a run deep into the NCAA he will need to learn to discipline himself with the cheap fouls. Teams like Mich. State will bait him him for sure.

You know...that's a good point. I like Adidas and their clothing, but that brand just doesn't offer the same level of attractiveness to high school recruits (moreso in basketball than football).

VolnotHamfan, I just read a stat the other day that said UT had the 6th most wins in CFB since back in the early 1900's. I don't understand your logic. 6 guards that expect to play and score? If we land Selby our lineup would be: 1: Selby/Goins, 2: Hopson/Golden, 3: Tatum/McRae, 4: Harris/Maymon, 5: Williams/Hall. Remember that the 3 in Pearl's offense is another guard.
osbymartin#581730 writes:
That would be great! We could be 10-12 deep and get back to the fast paced, pressing defense, running game that Pearl had the first couple years at UT. UT wore teams down during with that style. UT is 118-9 when leading or tied with 5 mins. to go.. Fatigue was a huge factor obviously...
osbymartin#581730 writes:
As much as you hate CBP for whatever reason. If you knew for a FACT then you would turn him in and prove us wrong. He is the top rated player from the state of NY that is a FACT. I am assuming that you are talking about Jayvaughn Pinkston, not sure since you left out who you meant about head to head. I went and saw what happened when they went head to head. Harris left the floor with a VICTORY. Another FACT Harris dominated Pinkston during the practices at McD AA.

Again with the insults...atleast I don't hide behind a fake name when I get on here and make a post. I also do not get on here and make baseless comments like I have the inside scoop on EVERYTHING that is going on. How about you back up some of your claims with some kind of proof? I don't think you can provide proof to things in which you have no knowledge of other than speculation just like all the rest of us on here. UT fans or not. I highly doubt that ANY college coach is gonna let another recruit's father determine who he is gonna recruit and try to sign. I mean it is great how you set yourself up with an excuse in that last part of your post. Because either way you can CLAIM to be right. If Selby signs then you can say you were right and if he don't then you can say that Mr. Harris wouldn't let CBP sign him. Its almost laughable...Personally, I think he is going to KU regardless but that is just me..I don't have the "inside scoop" that you do.
