Colts are fans of McClendon and Steelers take Scott in the fifth round

Jacques McClendon won't be just watching one of his favorite players anymore.

Now the former Tennessee guard could be in charge of keeping that player upright.

Indianapolis went back to the UT well to beef up its protection for Peyton Manning, looking to the Vols in the fourth round of the NFL draft on Saturday to help keep the most famous of them all safe in the pocket. At pick No. 129, the Colts found somebody who already owns a Manning jersey and is clearly excited to ensure the real version stays clean.

"I've got a Peyton Manning jersey," McClendon said during a conference call. "I've got his autographed helmet in my mother's house, so you know I'm a huge Peyton Manning fan.

"I can't wait to get to work and start learning from him. I know I have to be on top of everything."

The Colts don't expect that to be a problem for McClendon, who blew the franchise away with his total package of intelligence, athleticism and size. But he wasn't the only UT lineman to impress leading up to the draft, nor was Manning the only franchise quarterback to get some extra help up front.

Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger may be on the shelf for four to six games with a suspension to start the season, but when he comes back Chris Scott could be part of the group making his return more comfortable. The Steelers picked up the former Vols left tackle in the fifth round, and though he'll likely be moving inside to guard at the next level, like McClendon he should have a chance to compete for playing time for a team needing more depth on the line.

"It's a good deal, man," Scott said. "I really have a good feeling about it. I tell you, from the outside looking in, (waiting to get picked) can't be as hard as people make it out to be. But after going through it, watching television and the picks and waiting for that phone to ring, it can get a little nerve-wracking.

"But when that phone actually does ring, you're so happy. I'm just ready to go to work for them. Everybody's telling me the organization is top-notch, and hearing all this stuff about their organization and their situation, it seems like a perfect fit."

It might not have worked out quite as perfectly for Scott as it did McClendon, but obviously neither had any complaints after their names were called after three days of waiting. Now they're both going to be on the back of pro jerseys, which McClendon can surely appreciate.

And both Manning and Roethlisberger might be thankful as well after seeing the work their new linemen did last year for one of the best pass-protection teams in the nation.

"We worked hard," Scott said. "We didn't get a lot of the things done that we had wanted to accomplish at the beginning of the season. But by the end of the season, overall we can't be mad about what we all did.

"All of us had our opportunities, and all of us pretty much took advantage of our opportunities."

Starting now, it could be up to Scott and McClendon to create some for a couple of the most famous quarterbacks in the league.

Free-Agent Signing Day: A handful of Vols went overlooked through seven rounds, but it didn't take long for them to find a team that wanted them.

According to various reports, long-snapper Morgan Cox signed a free-agent deal with Baltimore, linebacker Rico McCoy landed with Tampa Bay, receiver Quintin Hancock is headed to Seattle and tight end Jeff Cottam signed with Cincinnati.

Former Fulton High School star and early draft entrant Dennis Rogan wasn’t selected in the draft after leaving UT following his junior year, but the defensive back also signed as a free agent with Tampa Bay on Saturday.

He is a Bengal with Chad Ocho Cinco who is currently on DWTS's. Chad bought his dancing partner, Cheryl, a $22,000 diamond ring. Jeff can learn his touchdown celebration dances from him and then make Chad pay his fine.

interesting Rogan and Rico both signed with Tampa Bay.... Monte must have talked them up to the glazer brothers.... I hope it works out for Rico, i always enjoyed watching him play and he was a real playmaker when he was healthy.... As far as Rogan goes, I guess i wish him luck as well, but i still think he is a moron....

Guys before we rip to hard on Rogan I don't think he was making it in college. I think if he truly had a choice he probably stays but I doubt he would have been eligible next season so he took the easy way out. I wish him and all the Vols well and I do think he has skills to be in the NFL.

I agree with you on everything about oakland, but i do see a scenario in which the Rooney's shop Big Ben.... But first I would like to say to say he is the biggest jerk in the world... I watched an Outside the Lines special on him on ESPN this morning, and he doesn't have any redeemable qualities... With that being said, no one in the pittsburgh franchise is happy with him... But they do need him.... However, if Dennis Dixon starts the first 4-6 games and if Pitt is winning and sees potential in Dixon, I could then potentially see them shopping Big Ben to see what kind of value is out there for him... It should be interesting to see this play out... If Dixon has been developed he could be a good NFL starter, the guy was electrifying at oregon before his senior season ending surgery.... By the way, I am officially on the chiefs bandwagon.... Great draft by Scott Pioli.... EB and Dexter McCluster in the second round was a steal.... I expect to see him play a role similar to Darren Sproles and Chris Johnson... He will be a valuable playmaker and contributer to that team (return game, running the ball, and you can line him up anywhere on the field as a reciever in backfield or slot)..... Terrific speed....

I've been scratching my head about this one since he made his announcement. I feel terrible for the young man. He had so much potential if he had stayed for his last season. And who knows, maybe he'll work out and catch on w/someone, either the Bucs or someone else, by demonstrating his coverage/special teams skills. He doesn't strike me as the kind who would have been talked into this by some type of "advisor." I just hope he isn't one of these who put their own personal stock of their skills above what the professionals actually thought.

Who drafted the Sullins twins? Do you get them both with a single pick?

I really thought McCoy should have been drafted.

Hancock is a surprise, I dont think he will make the roster. Hancock just does not have any great qualities. He is not fast, dont catch great, runs descent routs. Just my opinion. I do hope he proves me wrong.

Rogan is not a great corner or safety. Descent college player but seriously doubt he makes the Bucs roster.

If all the free agents do make a team that will give UT, what 11 NFL players on our roster last year. And Lil kid only won 6 games.

How did he get the USC job???

Oh and something I have been thinking about. Why the F*$% did Lil kid say they signed the #1 recruiting class this year at USC??? Did he even look at UF and U-TX? What a Idiot.

I guarentee lil kid will be fired at USC-W within 3 ears, after he loses 3-4 games each year. And then hopefully there will be no more brilliant minds (Mike Hamilton) that go grab Lil kid and the Red-Bull walking commercial.

Sometimes it means the kid was not meant to be a college graduate. Its not for everybody.

There's been an awful lof of Tennessee players who played their guts out and never had NFL talent- Billy Ratliffe, John Chavis, the Reveiz brothers, Daryl Dickey, tons of them.

To rag on the Sullins boys who gave their all for UT is sad.

Relax, Jack. I'm not ragging on them. I love them and their story. Just meant for a little levity on getting a 2-for-1 because they are identical twins. And yes, a little joke about the NFL drafting 6'1" 260# linemen. Sorry if the joke didn't compute, but I meant no ill will toward Cody and Cory.
