Vanderbilt drops 'interim', makes Caldwell head coach

NASHVILLE — Vanderbilt has removed the “interim” from the title of new football coach Robbie Caldwell.

Vanderbilt officials said Monday that Caldwell is the permanent coach and a new contract is being worked out for him.

He was named interim coach July 14 when Bobby Johnson announced his retirement from coaching.

The 56-year-old Caldwell has coached the Vanderbilt offensive line since 2002 and was assistant head coach in recent years under Johnson.

I heard this guy in an interview and he is anything but a tea sipper. He put the hill in hillbilly. Seemed like a good buy but who knows about his coaching.

I don't know anything about the coach and don't care. I'm George Cafego trained and he taught us how to dislike (for a nicer word) the Vaaaanderbilt Commodeadores! It's a rich and deep part of Tennessee Football Histroy. The University on the Boulevard are the Tee Sippers!

GO VOLS WE ARE UT!

Vanderbilt does not have an A.D. This is the easy way out for them. They need to ask themselves if Bobby Johnson had waited till Nov 30 to announce would Vandy have looked around the country for a head coach?

SmokeyHowls writes:

That is just dumb. Why would you do that when you dont need to. Wait and see how the guy does. Why paint youself into a corner for a guy you probably would not have chosen. If he does good and he is who you want then do his contract after the season, or see who else may be out there and interested. Who knows maybe Dave Clawson wants to come back to the SEC with an academic school. These kinds of decisions is why Vanderbilt is who they are.

back to the subject - hope he loses every game.

The Tennessean just reported that he already has an NCAA recruiting infraction. The report said that he simulated game day with a recruit when he took him into an empty stadium.

I consider RC a great Hire for Vandy. We'll see how his Head Coaching skills are over time, but Quality guy.

But, you gotta love Vandy....no athletic department, almost all their players (in all sports) go to classes and graduate, and they all have to pass English.

easleychuck writes:

No, you really don't have to love them. Plenty of reasons to dislike, what overall, is an arrogant bunch of individuals.

As far as making Caldwell permanent, what choice did they have? There wasn't very big line for the job.

Congrats Coach Caldwell.

Good luck...You'll need it.

I like this guy too, but I have to wonder how funny he thinks it is now. LOL I wish him the best every game except one.

they go to school at Peabody, not Vandy!
even though its now a "part" of Vandy, their athletes have gone to school at Peabody and played for Vandy for years...its the only way they were able to stay in the SEC...which, now, its time for them to exit!

Did he blow smoke in his face as he raced through the "V"?

Vanderbilt academics are totally overrated. The main value of a VU diploma is social.

Exactly pl. Can't put their nose in the air too much over his hire unless they are trying to get away from the smell of cornpone. I notice that our little buddy Vandygrad hasn't weighed in here. Guess there isn't much for a Peabody grad to say when UT's coach has a law degree and you've just hired Gomer Pyle.
