Chris Walker gives high marks for freshmen Corey Miller, Jacques Smith

Scenes and outtakes from the Vols media day

Freshman defensive ends Corey Miller and Jacques Smith enrolled at Tennessee in the spring.

That's paid monumental dividends in the eyes of senior defensive end Chris Walker.

"They're miles ahead of any freshman I've ever seen come in," Walker said. "They're ready to play right now, and they will play right now."

With Walker holding down one starting spot and Gerald Williams and Malik Jackson sharing the other, Miller and Smith might fill situational roles, though Walker sees them as more than that.

"I think they can play every down," he said. "They're big enough to, (and) they've got the motor to play."

Positive Response: UT coach Derek Dooley wasn't happy with the performance in last Saturday's scrimmage. But he has been happy with the response from his team since.

"I told the players on Sunday it was very important to pick one or two things to improve these next two practices because this is an easy time to (say) let's hurry up and get (camp) over with," he said.

"They've really responded well. Each player had their own one or two things. That was their job with their position coach, to pick one or two things that they really needed a little extra work on."

Status Update: Safety Brent Brewer (groin) and fullback Kevin Cooper (knee) missed Tuesday's practice, but both wore full pads and worked out on the side.

Don't puff 'em up too much Chris. Just raise the expectations.

GBO!

Any contribution from the young players is a positive. A few years from now this experience will only help. The 2012 and 2013 teams will be really good as long as these recruits pan out. UT still needs to pick up more DT's just haven't heard about any that may sign with us.
Anybody got news on this?

Come on. You really dont get it?

They were dressed in full pads, they stayed on the sidelines (off the fiels) and they worked out by themselves.

Not to be a smartAr$$, but it was self-explanitory.

SMITH IS A BEAST I WATHED HIM PLAY AT OOTLTEWAH LOOK FOR SOME SACKS FROM THIS YOUNG MAN AND HE IS FAST OF THE BALL COULD BE KEY PLAYER ON DEFFENSE

I too watched Jacq Smith at Ooltewah and he is a stud. I was really hoping that Georgia could turn him after the Kiffin debacle but he stayed true to his commitment and UT now has a stud DE for the next four years. Very nice young man to boot as well.

AND WE WILL BE WATHING HIM ON SUNDAYS IN 5 YEARS

Be aware that Chris Walker has never said a bad thing about anyone. Even after Kiffin bolted and emotions were high, Walker was appreciative and apologetic of Kiffin.

I wanted to vomit.

Were pretty loaded at DE next year. Martin, Jackson, Smith, Miller all return. The following year will be a problem if we dont sign at least 2 pure DE's and 4 quality DT's in 2011. Can you say Juco route??

Thats true, but we will have Smith and Miller at the starting DE for a least a couple of years, and our DT's.

Chuck will bring in the D-Linemen, Im not worried about that. We just need to build depth now, but as far as starters we're set for next year.

Sounds like an honorable guy to me. We need more players like him.

GO VOLS!

Good to hear some of our lack of experience players are going to pan out and play. I look forward to these two guys getting with it. Jacques is to be lauded for sticking with UT when a lot of uncertainty surrounded Coach Twinky's departure. Thanks for hanging with us big guy. Now, go make your mark in Orange. GO VOLS!

Wilcox employed a lot of seondary players and linebackers, I think even running something like a 4-2-5 most of the time at Boise State. Course, this ain't Boise State. How can they be picked top five without all this four and five star players guys talk about on here?

We might need a bunch of these tweeners and I hope they can come up fast cause they'll have to to slow down big SEC running attacks.

Chuck Smith has 2 good men here to work with. I'd love to see these 2 freshmen keep the Heisman winner under 100 yd average for a 3rd year against Tennessee!
