Seven wins not enough for season DVD

Lane Kiffin's only season at Tennessee won't be getting its own highlight DVD. But it's not because the former Vols coach skipped town, at least not entirely.

The Vol Network confirmed Monday it would not be producing or putting a 2009 season review on the market, and though public sentiment is part of the decision-making process, wins and losses are a stronger barometer of potential sales. And Kiffin's team simply didn't win enough to warrant a product.

"We do not have any plans currently to produce one," Vol Network general manager Steve Early said. "Generally from a retail perspective, there's not a set, specific guideline, but it would typically take about nine or 10 games in the win column.

"The whole idea behind these would be to have them out at Christmas, so we made that decision before (Kiffin left for Southern California). That had no impact for us, none whatsoever."

Based on his messy exit, the negative sentiment about Kiffin likely would have had an impact on sales even if UT had won more than seven games and avoided closing the season with a lopsided loss to Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Vols also didn't have highlight videos after losing seasons in 2005 and '08, and down or average years justifiably aren't big sellers.

The Vol Network still has DVDs for sale of every regular-season game with bonus footage of The Lane Kiffin Show on its Web site, but those would appear to be the last products of Kiffin's short tenure that will be made or sold.

"I'm not aware of anything that was specifically integrated with Lane or his first season," Early said. "We did a major revamp of the coach's show because we wanted to feature him, but we also wanted to include and feature the entire coaching staff. Other than that, we didn't have anything (like a documentary) or anything else planned.

"Hopefully we'll get some momentum with Coach (Derek) Dooley and be back in that business real soon."

If the Vol Network would like to memorialize a first season, it will get a second chance. But otherwise, the bar has been set for future DVD releases - and seven wins just aren't enough.

Let me be the first to say I am concerned how i will survive without a highlight DVD? I hope there is a 12 step process that starts with a good shower to get all the slime off.

I was going to say the same thing. I personally don't want to be reminded of that POS no more than we have too.

GO VOLS!!!!!

Classic, with fulmer riding out on the back of a golf cart after the players collapsed under his weight..

I know this is wrong. But I've thot @ those 3 stupid missed / blocked FGs vs UA, and then I've thot "good, at least Layla's husband didn't get to crow @ that". Then, I have to shake myself back 2 reality.

The point here is that, I can't see hardly anyone wanting to spend money to watch those coaches desecrate the Vols. Our players don't deserve that, but still. Very wise move to just move on with no memories and hope the bad taste of Hamilton's (+ his handlers) decision goes away soon.

Fire Hamilton, replace with fulmer. I think a
DVD of last season would be great, just leave the peach bowl out. I have never seen a team play as hard as they did except for two games last season.

And then what? Do you want to be Athletic Director? Hamilton won't be going anywhere until the jury is out on CDD which will probably take about three years to see how he does. Hamilton found us a great Basketball Coach in CBP. Why don't you support our athletics, unless your a UT hater in disguise. GBO!

While the team played hard and won some games 7 is not the standard at UT. Monterio, Crompton, Berry and others gave us some good memories but not enough to warrent a highlight DVD. I can't see shelling out $30 for a highlight (singular) video.

Hilarious. And right......who would want a DVD that has anything to do with that individual.... even if he had won 10 games, the market is crushed because of his classless departure.....which is too bad because those young men deserve a better memory!

Why on earth would a program like ours want a DVD for a 7 win season? I'm embarrassed this is even mentioned. I think we have forgotten what it's like to be a top tier program.

I'm over the fire Mike Hamilton sentiment!!!! He made one bad hire and everyone is out to get him. Look at what he has done for the university and he did bring in Pearl so give him a chance. If Kiffin wouldve stayed then we wouldnt be having this conversation.
Bring in Fulmer!? Are you kidding?! Look what he did to the football program at the end of his tenure. No thanks

you can wipe the memory of the coach as much as possible but don't do the players the disservice...they played as hard and with as much passion as any team in years...if there was a DVD that is what it ought to be for...produced with shots that never even show the coaches except maybe the one's staying...the players...they are not to blame. they gutted out an emotional ride and still have a road to hoe...let's not forget them!
