Hooker: Rogers looks like huge catch for UT

Dave Hooker

Secrets were once all the rage in recruiting.

Now, they're almost impossible to keep.

Just ask Da'Rick Rogers.

Understandably, the highly rated receiver from Calhoun (Ga.) High School wanted to break the news of his commitment to his friends, family and fans during a press conference this morning on National Signing Day.

Well, so much for that.

Recruiting analysts were arm-in-arm early this week: Rogers was headed to UT.

Then, when a Georgia fan Web site reported that Rogers called Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt to inform him he'd be a Vol, there weren't a lot of gasps heard round the newsroom.

Moreover, when Rogers was attacked via Twitter, he didn't deny the report.

Rogers certainly deserves some of the blame. He showcased a picture of himself kissing UT's 1998 national championship trophy on his Facebook page, yet he acted as if he still wanted to keep his intentions a secret.

The never-ending news cycle and social networking has reinforced an old adage: You can't kiss the trophy and have it, too - or something like that.

UT's coaches won't count Rogers as a signee until they receive his signed National Letter of Intent today, National Signing Day.

Prospects can begin signing, then faxing, their contracts at 7 a.m.

Rogers will announce his decision during a press conference at 9:45 a.m.

It may be a bit anticlimactic considering the circumstances, but here's the News Sentinel's predictions on Rogers:

Dave Hooker: UT

Austin Ward: UT

Josh Ward: UT

Now, it gets a bit more interesting. Rogers should just provide the beginning to an exciting morning for UT fans.

Offensive lineman James Stone from Maplewood High School in Nashville will make his announcement at 11:30.

The 6-5, 300-pound Stone was all about Alabama when Lane Kiffin strutted about Rocky Top. Things have changed under new head coach Derek Dooley.

Still, you know Nick Saban won't go down without a fight. Still, we all agree:

Dave Hooker: UT

Austin Ward: UT

Josh Ward: UT

Rogers isn’t the only highly rated receiver from Georgia considering UT. Markeith Ambles has long held the Vols’ fancy. He was committed to UT for months, then flirted with Southern California when Kiffin went west.

North Carolina also has entered the picture for the 6-2, 185-pounder from Henry County High in McDonough, Ga. Keith Ambles, Markeith’s father, said the family is still discussing their son’s options. An announcement is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, but the elder Ambles said they are considering postponing the it.

Dave Hooker: USC

Austin Ward: USC

Josh Ward: USC

If you've been following this column closely, you are realizing that the three sports writers extolling their opinions haven't disagreed once. Does that mean we're all right? Or all sheep?

To prove we don't share a brain, let's take a look at Glen Stanley, the 6-2, 245-pound linebacker from Eastern Arizona Junior College in Thatcher, Ariz., who visited USC after committing to be a Vol earlier this month:

Dave Hooker: UT

Austin Ward: UT

Josh Ward: USC

Now, back to the prospects - and some better news for UT fans.

The three of us all agree that 6-2, 240-pound defensive end J.C. Copeland from Troup High School in La Grange, Ga., will sign with UT after taking an official visit to LSU last weekend and being approached by USC this week.

We also agree that offensive linemen Chaz Green and Damien Robinson will sign with Florida and Mississippi State, respectively. Both were thought of as long shots for UT.

Still, even without a perfect day today, the Vols should be happy if they're able to land Rogers, Stone and, possibly, Stanley.

With those additions, the Vols could secure a top-10 signing class nationally.

That will make it even more interesting to see what Dooley can do with more than 18 days to recruit.

And what UT can lure in without a first-year coach, again.

I agree with all the predictions except two. I don't think that it's unanimous that Ambles is a given for USC. I think UNC and UT are still legitimately in the running. I'm not saying he probably won't end up at USC, I just disagree that its obvious.

Last, I think it is really up in the air for LB Stanley. I think Kiffin and Co. made the same impression they made on many recruits for UT while he was here last year recruiting. USC is a genuine possibility. Regardless, I like the sound of Crump.

Don't know how you can rank 18-year-olds against one another? The question is: Can CDD put together a staff which can prepare a team to compete in the toughest fb conference in the country?
And can the staff put together an offensive line that can play, especially with the apparent talent at so-called skill positions.
Who will step up on defense? Will linebackers improve? Will their be depth on the d-line? Can the d-ends put on some weight so they won't be dominated by large offensive tackles in the fourth quarter?
Recruiting classes are like a Christmas wish-list. Sometime what you get isn't what it is cracked up to be and sometime the gift not in a glitzy package turns out to be the most enjoyable.

Not likely but pretty dang good given the circumstances. Hats off to Judge Dooley.

Tennessee forgot that for 14 months. With the hiring of Derek Dooley, UT now has a chance to get it back.

I'm sure you can't...how does it feel to know that we will sign your best players? I know maybe you should run all of your players out on the field in the 4th quarter hen you get a field goal against UT? You are in jeopardy of going back to your place as the 3rd or 4th Team in the SEC East - how does that taste?!
