Poll: What can we possibly do now that football season is over to make up news articles?
I kind of liked it when Kiffin was around, because we were talking football (ok arrests, secondary violations, and defending his stupid mouth). But I guess this is fine too. I'll just troll USC sites and laugh.
I am glad to see that he was able to keep 2 of the best coaches from the last staff. He took his time to bring in new guys that he feels will fit the program. It was best that he did not rush in order to get the right mix. We will see how it worked out in 3-4 years. GBO!!!
I like this staff. There's a mixture of young coaches with veterans that have more than 30 years in the business.
I know there's always the chance that a hot coach will get a better offer if we play well next year, but I think we have some guys that will be around for a while.
There's little doubt in my mind that Chuck Smith could have landed a job in the NFL had he wanted one, but he chose to come back home to coach the Vols with his former high school teammate.
I voted an A, but we might not know how good this staff is for two or three years until after they've had a chance to work with the players.
Where's the choice for incomplete. You can't grade a staff that's just been put together. There has to be time to gel as a staff & gel as a team. But if I were giving a grade I'd say C b/c no proven big name coaches are on the staff but also no bad coaches appear to be on the staff. That's subject to change after the season though.
When it comes to Tennessee football I am alway as glass half full fan. I don't expect to go undefeated, that we be psycho. But at the same time I expect to win every next game that we play. I don't see anyone on schedule that come game day I would't expect to beat. Same with coaching staff. I think that we have the perfect storm for the SEC. Our defense is going to punch you in the mouth on every play. We may not be the biggest or fastest but we will hit you hard and often. Our offense will run some, hit wideouts on some of those little screens and hope they can turn in big yardage. My biggest optimism if tight end. That will be our safety valve over the middle against linebackers. Special teams will be special this year. Our coaches will outcoach there coaches and there will be some surpizing results. Until proven I concede not one game this year. ROCKY TOP!
Sorry for some of the incoherence as I am a bit under the influence right now.Hope you just got the gist that every yr. I choose to be way optimistic without apology. ROCKY TOP!
I like the staff DD has put together. The only drawback for me was how long it took to hire Smith, especially after the Jets got beat. I think hiring him earlier definitely would have helped in keeping Copeland and possibly Miller in the fold on NSD. I'm not sure I buy the argument that they had to hire Wilcox first before getting Smith to commit - If anything, hiring a young DC before a more seasoned DL coach would have posed problems.
Right now, I think that you have to give the coaching staff a "B." HUGE potential, but lots of unproven commodities (especially when it comes to SEC play) keep them from receiving an A grade. Still, if recruiting is any indication, we are in for some bright days ahead.
I commend Coach Dooley on his outside-the-box thinking, especially regarding the hiring of DC Wilcox and DL coach Smith. That's not to sell coaches Chaney, Thompson, or the rest short...I just think that Wilcox and Smith were two extremely important "gets" for our team.
We will know more about them after next year and see if they can coach the players up. But I bet they are counting on the TENN fans to be there and back the team.
Being just one of the thousands of UT fans who is smarter and more experienced than Hammy and Coach Dooley I would add my expert opinion on this staff and grade it with an ????. Who knows what this staff will do? How many of us are qualified to give such an opinion? (It is fun though.) We will just have to wait and see at this time next year.
Jim Chaney proven, that's a stretch. Just b/c you can tie your name to 1 player doesn't make you a proven good coach. Lance Thompson is only proven as a strong recruiter. If he were a great position coach why wouldn't he be a coordinator some where. I'm not trying to knock these 2 by any means but I believe there were more proven commodities out there to be had. As for the WR coach, the Rams have been pitiful in the passing game the last couple of years. Maybe it's not all the receivers fault but some blame has to rest on them. Yeah he coached Chris Carter & Randy Moss but they're HOF players who were good without him. The main coaches I was saying weren't proven were the 2 guys from LA Tech, the WR coach, & the defensive coordinator. And as I said proven coaches with a big name to draw in talent like a Monte Kiffin, Ed Ogeron, etc. They drew in players on name alone. Also, the head coach is very unproven. LA Tech & Tennessee are two different places with different amounts of pressure. At LA Tech 8 wins gets a promotion & Tennessee 8 wins gets a pink slip. Can these coaches handle that pressure? Who knows but to give these guys an A as a coaching staff is absurd having not seen 1 practice let alone 1 game.
These coaches were hired with a sense of urgency. I don't think anyone really believes that this is the coaching staff we would have if Kiffin had waited until after February 3 to resign. Therefore, this may be as good as we could have done under the circumstances. They certainly did a great job of holding the recruiting class together. But, when all we have to judge them on is past experience, with a head coach who went 4-8 in the WAC last year, and a DC who was fresh out of college and a graduate assistant in the WAC 6 years ago, I don't see how you can go higher than a C.
He brought his two best with him from the La Tesh staff. Kept two of the best from Kiffin's staff. Added impressive experience on the offensive side...WR coach and Chicago Bears O line coach. Added a special teams whiz...(which we REALLY needed!) Chuck Smith is a wild card who appealed to the old school Vols. And then the best of the bunch may turn out to be the young, workaholic defensive coordinator Wilcox.
Many thought that the Fulmer staff was too inbred and therefore lacking in fresh ideas. This bunch comes from all over the place. Hopefully we will be able to pull out and utilize the best of the wide variety of experiences.
First year to follow recruiting. Curious why so few SEC schools looked at OL Seantrel Henderson. Seems only fitting for Tennessee to go get him while he waits to see if NCAA comes down on USC!
Ya'll need to go to the Atlanta paper and read all the trash Georgia fan are saying about Da'Rick Rogers---ya'll have really pi$$ed them off-GOOD. Here's the link

Ha ha ha. Yeah, I guess that is one way to look at it. Henderson can go to any school in the country on scholarship. To get facilitate the process, he narrowed his choices down to his top-10. As I recall, Florida was the only school from the SEC that was listed in his choices. He ended up picking USC. He is awaiting their chat with the NCAA but I still think he ends up as a trojan.
When do you think they will have the staff with there official title? We all know Coach Dooley is the Head Coach, Chaney is the OC, Wilcox is the DC, Smith is D-Line, but what about the rest of the staff? Any body have any ideas on what they will coach?
Seantrel Henderson, ( the nations #1 HS recruit ) has committed to Kiffin/USC but decided at Nat Signing Day NOT to sign papers until there is a decision made by NCAA on ongoing USC investigation. Would'nt it be poetic justice if Coach Dooley & Coach Chuck Smith paid him a visit and snaked him right out from under Kiffin??? Who knows ?? It might work, you never know what a 18 yr old will do or think.

I don't know I have a friend who is a USC fan from Cali & he's saying that USC is in for major probation (scholarship losses, forfeiting of games, & no bowl eligibility) & will lose Henderson to either Florida or Ohio State. Of course that is just speculation but as a Gator fan I could only hope that holds true. And before people yell interloper I also like the Vols it's just when Florida plays UT I have to root for my Gators.
Coach Dooley hired this staff in a corporate and business like manner, like the lawyer he is.
The cross-over of the knowledge they have of each other and this Staff knowing Dooley, having work with Dooley and some having worked with each other at different places is Awesome!
To coin a movie guote from actor and former Senator Thompson 'The Russians don't take a dump without a plan son, what is his plan?'
LOL, (Which Movie?)
Coach Dooley as the Lawyer did the same with a 'Plan' that put together people that were great at their coaching position, whom he knew and had worked with in the past!
Now it's time for Coach Dooley and Staff to Coach the Players Up!
It's also time for the VOLNATION to be at every home game with a FULL 108,000 Neyland Stadium to help 'Protect this House' again!
It's not like Nash had no other interest from other schools. This is strange. Is Nash not the QB that was throwing to Rodgers. Why would Nash even go to UT thinking he was inferior. All you Dawgs are just crying preppy grapes.

I thought for sure that he was going to sign with Ohio State. It was a surprise to see USC steal him away. He wants to play left tackle in a pro style offensive...(ala, The Blind Side). Doubt that Florida, and the veer-spread-wishbone, can get into the mix for him.

I wouldn't be surprised if Meyer moves to a more conventional offense this year b/c Brantley's ability to throw the ball. All spring practice last year Brantley took snaps under center b/c he's more of a pro-style qb than Tebow was. Plus, Henderson was high on the Florida coaching staff since Florida has pumped players into the pros here lately. I would be surprised if it isn't USC or Ohio State but my friend seems to think Meyer is in the mix on him b/c of the Kiffin factor & him wanting to jack Kiffin's recruits.
It's not like Nash had no other interest from other schools. This is strange. Is Nash not the QB that was throwing to Rodgers. Why would Nash even go to UT thinking he was inferior. All you Dawgs are just crying preppy grapes.
I have watched 3 full games on CD of Nash Nance. All I can say is SLEEPER! This kid is really good at QB! Better withhold judgement until we all see him try out for the job!

I say we offer Henderson. We offered Shon Coleman and lost him. We offered Robert Crisp and lost him. We need OL men. He wants to play. Play he will.

Hum, well that is interesting. I didn't know the name of Tebow's backup. Wondered where they they were going to find another guy who could take that kind of beating.
You never know where these high school guys will end up. Henderson is a big time stud of a player. He is huge! Hope he stays out of the SEC.
OR....... Da'Rick wanted to play for a program that is on the rise, not spiraling downward, and play for a coach who at least has a few years left before he gets canned....
Not much of a choice if you ask me.... Of course, like you, I'm probably a little biased...
His buddy Nash a QB is needed at UT. Tyler Bray or Nash Nance will be the future after the JUCO Simms. Stevens is gone after this year, so it makes sense for the Big Orange.
You are right, Nash picking UT over Vaaaanderbilt makes all the sense in the world, LOL!
DaRick likes his Bro but he wasn't willing to follow him to Vaaanderbilt, LOL can't blame him.
No rules were broken, it was a kid making a choice that fit his needs and playing at a TOP University in the SEC with his Bro.
So the last 2 years GA & TN respectfully traded # 1 WR recruits! We are happy with our GA WR, the question is are you happy with yours from TN?
Those 10 year stats don't mean a thing as coach Fulmer can tell you. Its "what have you done for me lately"? Hey I like Richt, but I figure he has 2 years to turn Georgia around or he will be fired, which I don't agree with, but thats the way it is today in college football.
I heard someone on the locker room show here locally say the SEC east is anybody's this year, just flip a coin, but all agreed that this might be South Carolina's year. I think Georgia will be a better team this year, especially on D as they hired a great DC. But the SEC east is so competitive. Heres my prediction for the SEC east:
But if Coach Dooley wins at UT, we are not sending him packing at all. We are the school that normally keeps head coaches 14 to 16 years if they win, i.e. Majors and Fulmer. Just like Vince Dooly, Coach Dooley will stay at UT like Vince stayed at GA when the former Governor of Alabama offered Vince the MOON to leave GA and return to Auburn. That didn't happen and neither will it with CDD, like you said, 'close to the tree'.
We already know what we have in Mrs. Barbara! CLASS FAMILY indeed! She will look REAL GOOD in ORANGE!
The Devil went down to GA looking for a Family to Steal (and a WR) Play it CDB! ROFLMAO! GBO!

See ya on the field in Athens, BEAT GA!
GO BIG ORANGE!

If we go 3-9, Dooley will be fired! Thats not happening, IMO we will finish 7-5, or 6-6 with a bowl invite.

Yeah you're right and the price of gas is still 75 cents per gallon, ROFLMAO!
BIG ORANGE 8 & 4 in 2010 with the home schedule advantage. What KY coming to Neyland and win a game? LOL, LOL, that cracks me up!
GBO!

Thanks HomerDawg Dude, Good luck to GA as well.
Yeah we like Coach Dooley a lot, with Vince and Barbara in the stands at Neyland; we might start selling GA Peach Ice Cream at the game, LOL!
GA did pretty well with an Auburn Grad in Vince and UT will do the same with Coach Dooley too!
GO BIG ORANGE

1) Florida
2) South Carolina
3) Georgia
4) Tennessee
5) Kentucky
6) Vanderbilt

LOL understand Homerdawg,
But if Coach Dooley wins at UT, we are not sending him packing at all.
ROFLMAO!
GBO!
