Berry to be honored by Oklahoma Senate

OKLAHOMA CITY — University of Tennessee safety Eric Berry will be honored by the Oklahoma Senate for winning the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award given each year to the nation’s best college defensive back.

Berry will be honored Monday during a ceremony on the Senate floor and a Senate resolution will be read honoring the Georgia native.

Berry had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries for the Volunteers this season. He also was second on the team with 83 tackles.

Thorpe was an Oklahoma native and member of the Sac and Fox Nation.

Sorry to use this as a Q and A forum, but does anyone know the date for the Orange and White game? Way to go EB!!! Sure could have used you and Rogan next year, but don't blame you one bit for going. Good luck to you both. Go Big Orange!!!

Class act all the way. Thank you Eric for the many highlights on the field and for being the epitome of what it means to be a Tennessee Vol.
Think I'll get an Eric Berry jersey next year no matter what team drafts you, except the Raiders.

Congratulations, Welcome back to the Hill. Hey this would be a great opportunity for you to show the SEC AND the rest of the College Football world what you are all about. Go after Seantrel Henderson while he is still unsigned. With your knowledge, expertise, and background I know you would definitely have a lot of influence on him. What have we got to lose? All he can do is say NO. On the other hand if he said Yes, what great poetic justice it would be to take him away from Kiffin/USC. It would also show everybody what Chuck Smith is capable of and all about. Good Luck, Glad to have you with UT, I have all the confidence in the world that you will do an outstanding job for the Big Orange.

Tentatively scheduled for April 17.

The article was about Eric Berry. Not sure where you were going. Congratulations Eric, and thanks for all the memories. I predict he will be drafted #3 by the Tampa Bay Bucs. GBO!

shame he was never put in the postition to break the NCAA record. Poor coaching decision. Wished he could have played under a dfferent crew

Proud of your commitment and dedication to the University of Tennessee. Your willingness to serve the team in the capacity you did, is a true merit to your maturity as a man. Get your degree, and be a pro as long as the Lord allows you. Hope the Titans trade up to get you in the NFL draft, or the Cowboys.

I totally agree. I would understand if the previous DC really needed EB to play varied roles on defense, and I thought it provided opportunity for him to showcase his range of ability.

It would have also been great for him to play more in the position that he excelled in and break the record. Sure would have been another mark on his resume and for the program.

I don't think it would have been hard to pull off both (breaking record & playing multiple positions). They (HC & OC) were really only concerned with how EB could help them.

A coaching staff worrying more about how a player can best help the team instead of the player's individual stats! What a concept! Just kidding; I think I know what you mean. I would have loved to see Berry set the INT-yardage record as much as anyone, but the good thing about it, since he won't be back in any case, is that this season will not cost Berry one thin dime in his pro contract.
