Catholic High School junior offensive tackle Kyler Kerbyson was pulled from Spanish class early Tuesday afternoon to take a phone call.
But the matter was neither urgent nor dire. Vanderbilt University offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell simply wanted to extend a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Kerbyson.
While Kerbyson didn't commit, just receiving the offer helped confirm to himself that he belongs on the Division I level.
"I was very excited," said Kerbyson. "I couldn't hold in my excitement. I've been smiling for about the last hour and a half.
"I actually have a shot now (to play Division I). It's out there for me to get."
Kerbyson was the highest-graded offensive lineman for Catholic this past season. He was an All-KIL performer and a PrepXtra second team selection.
He is also being heavily recruited by Arkansas, Wake Forest and Clemson.
Kerbyson will attend a junior day at Clemson on Feb. 20. Vanderbilt asked Kerbyson to travel there in March.
Kerbyson doesn't think he has it made just yet. That's a lesson he's learned from those who have gone through the recruiting process before him.
"I've just learned to be very humble," he said. "Work hard in the weight room and out on the practice field, because you never know who is watching."

We need to lock this guy down before he leaves town it wont hurt to offer than trying to get him after he commits to someone else Lame Kitten is gone Go vols

Catholic = Farragut now? I'm not one who usually criticizes the KNS, but come on...
VolAlum2003 (Inactive) writes:
Just because Vandy is recruiting him, it doesn't mean that UT should fall all over themselves trying to get him. Let Dooley and his team evaluate this kid and then decided if he's talented enough to play at UT...I mean, maybe he isn't. If he isn't, then a free Vanderbilt education is one hell of a consolation prize.

I know I'm repeating another post, but "Farragut OT"? I'm sure this "Catholic High" athlete is peeved about this headline. C'mon, KNS, I know you read these posts. Change the dang headline.
Futurecoach16 writes:
But, on a related note, getting an offer to get a free education from Vandy is hard to pass up. Wish him the best wherever he goes.

Maybe the Vols are...work hard and the Orange will come calling like all the rest

I think Kiffin has offered his 9 year old little brother.

Now thats funny. If the kid is worthy, I think we all know he will get an offer from UT.
mdvol writes:
Doesn't matter. If we want him we'll just offer a "package deal" for their stud QB with Kerbyson and steal another one from Vandy on the last day!!! (see Nash Nance)
AWOLVol writes:
If a kid's a good player he's a good player. Please don't imply that Farragut is the only school in Knoxville that produces D-I ready players. AE, Maryville, Alcoa, Catholic, Webb, Fulton, Bearden and plenty of other Knoxville area schools have all put kids into Division One.
Bear in mind that the KNS is not the Daily Beacon. If a Knoxville kid gets an offer from any D-I school (especially an SEC school) as a junior, that's news-worthy for Knoxville's sports page.

The poster wasn't implying anything. When this article was first posted the headline read "Vanderbilt Offers Farragut OT Kerbyson". Poster was merely pointing out the error.

Hey why don't you take your garbage and "shots" somewhere else. Do you really think your moronic comments are worth reading. Go somewhere else or get a life, idiot.(see Lane Kiffin)
BIVOLAR_BEAR writes:
true, but what the heck happened to Dalvin Glass?? CH offered him and he contacted UT last week about the schools interest..What gives??
Futurecoach16 writes:
As the guy earlier said, I wasn't implying anything about the place the kid was coming from other than the school being wrong in the article. I know Catholic produces very good athletes, as is evident from their immediate success in the bigger districts. I do follow KIL athletics.

Funny looking over your whopping 52 comments in three years! You like to critique everyone and call names. You should expand your vocabulary beyond "idiot", "moron", and "retard". But thanks for being an avid reader of my posts.

Amazing you could even recognize that level of success and intelligence.
Nance will have plenty of time to polish his two stars while he's holding a clipboard for 4 years.
Face it Kat, no Rogers, no Nance.
AWOLVol writes:
My apologies then...when I came along the error had already been fixed. I hope you can see where I was coming from, though, given the circumstance as it existed when I read the article. No offense intended...

Gosh I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. Thanks for checking on my "whopping" posts. I'm sure you have many more than I do but I have noticed that yours are very critical. BTW many others have noticed it too obviously because I read them too.
I guess your slams and negative comments about anything Vols just hacks me off. So with no name calling, I'll just remind you that this is a Vols site. If you don't like things, peddle your remarks elsewhere.

Where did ZAK TAIT of Catholic sign with? KNS wrote all these articles about where he was going and I haven't seen or heard anything.

Now was this a KNS backhand to the new staff for not recruiting Jr's and 8th graders ??? I mean Kiffin has his 8th grade class already locked up! I mean come on Coach Dooley, my son is in the 3rd grade and thinking of playing next year. How bout an offer...I'll take two in case I break one...

Come on guys, let's cut back on the personal attacks. People come on here for fun and a break from the harshness of the real world. If you disagree with a post, why not just state your disagreement without a personal attack on the poster? Go Vols!

What I got from this story was the kid was happy he got a offer from Vandy becouse Vandy is a A1 class school. But then the story read on to say Arkansas, Wake Forest, and Clemson had also offered. If I was the kid I would be more excited about UARK or Clemson, they have better records. Another thing, I'm not up on the rules like some you guys are but isn't there something wrong about a school calling a Kid out of class to give him an scholarship offer?
cooper65#432178 writes:
Thank you marinevol, the meaness on this board is an embarrassment to VolNation. It's shameful the way every kid who selects another school is trashed. Being honest, our program is down and most publicity has been very bad. Coach Dooley is off to a good start with his personal conduct and a top 10 recruiting class. Now we need a couple of high profile victories, but we are not as bright on the radar screens of the prized recruits as we need to be. Let's be honest and conduct ourselves in a manner that brings credit to VolNation while Coach Dooley is righting the ship.

I played middle school ball with Kyler at Robertsville in Oak Ridge. He was alright back then but because of my size i could over power any one on the team. Seeing this makes me really happy for him and i'm a little pissed at myself for not sticking with the game. I wonder who i would be getting calls from in the middle of school.
