ATHENS, Ga. -- When Rodney Garner became Georgia's recruiting coordinator in 1998, video clips of high school football prospects were not readily available on the Internet.

There were no comprehensive online recruiting sites such as Rivals.com and Scout.com, nor were players announcing their decisions by wearing various hats. Garner has evolved with these publicity-driven avenues in the recruiting process, but now Facebook.com and Twitter.com have entered the mix.

"I know you've got to embrace some of these things, but my job is already encompassing enough," Garner said. "I'm not going down certain roads right now until I have to."

As the recruiting passion continues to grow, so have Facebook and Twitter as means to which prospects can give updates or clues about their decisions. In some cases, they intentionally mislead people to see what kind of reaction will occur.

Totally concur. It appears our youth-oriented culture knows no limits. It appears our appetite for hype surpasses our need for sound reason in many cases. Just remember, there are several top 10 schools each year who aren't littered with 4 and 5 star "texters".

These kids aren't unlike recruits from 20 years ago. Except now they have the social networking sites where people can become their "friends" and stroke their egos. The capacity for extensive butt-kissing has risen exponentially.

I'm with ya Rodney.Dont exactly know what a damn twitter is.The only thing I know about facebook is that my boss(wife) is on it.

People, we are dealing with BOYS who are not mature yet.... They use it as a means to find the best looking girls at any given School... That think they may have a shot with... Case in point, A certain kid who came to knoxville wanting to go bone to bone with a certain Blonde, who is working on the Sports Animal..

It's almost like a bunch of guys replying to an article. That would not have happened 20 years ago either

Can you tweet if you don't have cell phone service?

I just got to see 15 deer cross a field, though.

Never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.
