Assignments for Dooley's staff official

The spots on Tennessee coach Derek Dooley’s first staff are finally official.

A UT spokesperson confirmed Thursday that offensive coordinator Jim Chaney would also coach running backs next season, and Terry Joseph will serve as the recruiting coordinator in addition to coaching defensive backs.

The rest of the positions as projected by the News Sentinel were confirmed as well: Charlie Baggett (assistant head coach/wide receivers), Harry Hiestand (offensive line), Eric Russell (tight ends/special teams), Darin Hinshaw (quarterbacks), Lance Thompson (linebackers), Chuck Smith (defensive line). Defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox will not be responsible for a specific position group.

I truly believed that Lance Thompson would end up being the recruiting coordinator. Shows what I know. I do hope this staff recruits well, and all indications are that it should be more than fine.

Is Chaney actually going to be a real offensive coordinator under Dooley? It would be interesting to see what he could do if allowed to do his job this time.

Coach Dooley had a recruiting system in place at LouTech. But I have to believe that Coach Thompson should be the top recruitng coach on the chart. Hey, I've been wrong before. Come to think of it, exactly how many top LB recruits did Coach Thompson bring us this year?

I hope the answer to your Q is yes, because Chaney coaches rockim-sockim, move the chains and score offense. We may have the best OC in the country. If not, them we at least have one of the best. Let's hope that Coach Dooley is smart enough to turn him loose.

This is smelling like soured milk to me and also to coach thompson. LT should be the RC and LB coach or even assistant DC for that matter. I would be checking out options. I do not agree with this decision especially with the loyality and the job he did in recruiting!!!!

well with LT at linebacker coach, it is like having 2 def coord. and 2 recruiting cord. The Chuck Smith as Line coach wow. Chaney gonna get a chance to call games maybe. Staff looks good. Now go win. GBO

I would of rather of given the DC job to LT than to have wilcox! wilcox is another dave clawson hire. i hope im wrong but thats what i think.

rockytopatl writes:

Why does everyone jump to conclusions? Did it occur to anyone that maybe Thompson didn't want to be recruiting coordinator? It's a lot of adminstrative work and he might not want to go there.

chrisw2967 writes:

Maybe LT doesnt want to be RC and is happy with the way things are.I just hope the ST coach is up for the challenge.I agree I think Chaney will do fine being able to be the real OC, I think he made Kiffin look better than he actually was.

Ive just been impressed with LT. I too think he would of been a good DC. I hope that now that we have LT and a DC we are better than LT being DC and hiring an assistant. I also thought he might be recr. cord. and he may have been offered both. Glad to have him.

That's exactly the reason Kiff...I mean "X" went for Norm Chow. He knows he can't call smart, crunch time plays. (i.e. UCLA.)

OldSmokey writes:

Sounds Good to me. I just hope Thompson is happy. We really cant afford to loose him!

RoadTrip writes:

I agree - the RC position is more administrative. CDD needs CLT on the road recruiting and developing attack dog LBs - which is what he likes to do. He also coordinates well with the DL coach since he has coached that postion. CLT is probably very happy with the role he has at this point and is well compensated to do it with a long term friend/fellow coach as a boss.

tenuscvol writes:

I hope Lance is happy with his role and will stay for 3 -4 years...I think he and CDD believe in the same thing and hopefully CLT is willing to learn and develope. We will then wish him well as he would advance and may need to leave but hopefully not for 4-5 five years after our 2nd NC!

I think you are just standing downwind. I honestly think they should hire you next season to oversee hiring all assistants and putting them in the proper position to coach. I'll talk to Dooley about it as I know he was concerned he didn't know how best to do it. Are you sure you will be available? Want to make sure before I bring it up with him.

Asst coaches dont really recruit certain positions, they recruit areas. Lance Thompson had Georgia an Alabama.

Comparing Richmond (Clawson) to Boise State (Wilcox) is specious at best, at worst insulting to Mr. Wilcox. Phil's impetus for hiring Clawson was a desperation move to spark the offense and save his own tail. Wilcox was hired by Dooley because he has coached against him and has seen in person what his teams can do. Completely different situations. I'm not saying that he won't end up being a Clawson but at this point, we have absolutely no reason to think so. Go Vols!!!

clawson was hired because tennessee was predictable and fulmer was looking for the next big thing, and either had or hasn't ever had to prepare for a SEC team 6 or 7 games a year. 09/18/10 vs. Florida, 09/25/10 vs. UAB, 10/02/10 at LSU, 10/09/10 at Georgia, 10/23/10 vs.Alabama, 10/30/10 at South Carolina 11/06/10 at Memphis, 11/13/10 vs. Mississippi. Thats 6 SEC teams in 8 weeks plus you start with oregon on sept 11th. He has no idea whats about to take place

You did not just compare the former head coach of Richmond and current head coach at Bowling Green....to the former defensive coordinator at Boise State. Who has had a top 10 defense the last three years. Not to mention two BCS wins.

I read on Rivals.com that had a list of players each coach was recruting....LT was involve with far more players recruiting then all the other coaches put together.

Yeah! That Dave Clawson is no good! He brought Richmond a NC and took Bowling Green to the big game his first year as head coach. Who needs someone like that? Seriously though, I don't think Clawson was given the time or the latitiude to do things his way, but we'll never know. I think Phil kind of hampered his development. Plus, he ran a system, and did not have his type of players.

100% totally disagree....worst assistant coach ever at UT. Given time....it would have gotten worse. Name one positive thing he did? NOTHING...and it kills me today that we are still paying that idiot.
