Maze named SEC player of the week

Tennessee point guard Bobby Maze was named SEC Player of the Week after averaging 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in victories over Charlotte and No. 1 Kansas.

Maze's performance against the Jayhawks on Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena included 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while committing just two turnovers.

Vanderbilt's John Jenkins was named freshman of the week.

I have no problem giving it to him but I think JP Prince played the best defensive game of his career!

Well deserved B. Maze! Do they have a walk-on of the week award??? McBee sure was clutch. One thing is for sure, they had to look at least 4-5 deep at this Tennessee team to find the right player of the week!

A truly inspired performance from Bobby Maze. Your hard work, dedication and the ability to keep your nose clean have made the Vol Nation gleam with much needed pride. Keep it up and as always its GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!!!!

Congrats to Bobby! A very, VERY impressive performance. Going against the #1 team in the country and the best PG in the country and you play like that? Wow. Well done.

Rockygrass writes:

Yes, JP played great (hit your free throws buddy).....but Maze managed the team at point like nobody has in a long time. Way to go guys! Lets start beating up on some SEC teams.

LiveFaith writes:

Have to admire his defense as well. Very solid forcing their star to win it with contested jumpers.

This years game looked NOTHING like last years where KU carved up our guards like holiday turkeys. Props to JP, Wayne, and even Kenny as well. I was very impressed that KU never seemed to find a groove.

What a game. Wish I was there. Atmosphere reminded me (on TV) of the OT game against UTjr a few years back. Wish I was there for this one.

Beat AU!

UTBEATEMALL writes:

They should have mentioned his defense on Sharron Collins, holding him to a horrible shooting percentage! I just hope that Coach Pearl recognizes that having that PF on the floor that can knock down the 3 ball lets his offense run much more efficiently. As much as Tyler Smith did for UT basketball you could always point at his lack of ability or confidence in making the 3 ball as a hinderence to the offense. The guards found a lot more room to drive the ball to the hoop when Woolridge made them guard him on the perimeter. Reminded me of Dane Bradshaw who didn't hit a ton of threes, but hit enough timely ones that they had to honor him. If these guys can beat the number one team in the country, I would tell the suspended players that they shouldn't expect a ton of minutes when they come back until this group proves they can't handle it. But I would make this group prove they can't handle it! They looked very cohesive!

Congrats Bobby. I think Maze is player that needs heavy minutes to perform well. I have a feeling when Goins comes back if he comes back he will play less then 10 minutes a game unless its a blow out. I thick all three players if they come back will have a hard time cracking the top 9 of the rotation.

Yep, if any (or all) of the three get back, they should be reduced to 100% back up roles. The 9 men they left high and dry proved they can handle the load.

Agreed. I think alot of us in Volunteer nation are thinking alike about the three who are suspended now. After Hall's performances, I don't see how Williams reclaims his spot as Chism's #2. Goins and Tatum would be helpful for depth, but should be made to work to prove they belong in the rotation from now on.

Way to go, Bobby. Congratulations, you deserve the honor. I was very impressed with the performances this past week.

Agreed, but remember, they left 8 guys high and dry. 12 to a team, but we have 8 left, and only 1 of the 4 suspended is gone now. So even at full strenth," we're not going to have a full team. Either way, I'm so proud of how our guys played that game. Gonna be an interesting rest of the season!! :)

This team has become a TEAM after the suspensions. I hope coach Pearl doesn't upset the chemistry when the others return. Please keep the same starting rotation. Go Vols!

I agree with Maze' honor, but I think Prince should be promoted to King for his defense and unselfish play. Reminded me of Bradshaw.

rab63 writes:

It looks like what has really changed since the four suspensions is that seating has opened up for Pearl's assistants. If you look at the sidelines during a game you'll see Pearl standing at the end of the scorer's table and in the first five seats behind him are five SUITS ! It really looks weird

Williams probably won't get to reclaim his spot on the team, much less his position.
Congrats, Bobby.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Basketball is a game of teamwork and cohesion. This cannot be accomplished with changing at least one player (and often more than one) every 4 minutes.

It used to drive me crazy that no matter how hot Lofton started the game...he came out at the 16 minute mark every time.

its a love -hate with Prince. Yes, without his defense we get beat. With his foul shots, we almost get beat...

ProwlinAndGrowlinSmokeyDog writes:

Prince had been shooting free throws better until this game when he missed several in a row..he definitely still is beneficial to this team because of his defense and ability to drive to the basket.

what?????? the 14 mins he was out there? and that was 2 mins too long since he cant hit a free throw. hall is the one we primarily have to thank for defense in this game. aldrich couldnt even get his hands on the ball.

Bruce should stay with the team as it is - then let the presently suspended players play while the present ones catch a breather. IF they are allowed the opportunity to have the privilege to play at UT again.

As somebody "in the know", would you say the team was torn in different directions with Smith here? It seemed to me that a lot of the time everyone would kind of wait around for him to do something and quite frankly this year he didn't seem that interested. Or maybe it's all the subs coming in and out all the time that messes up the rythem. What do you think?

vol_4_fan writes:

Maze played a really solid game, so congrats to you. JP can play the passing lanes and drive it to the basket he just has way to many mental mistakes (stupid fouls & play groung lay ups) Wayne has to be smarter with his fouls, a 4 year starter come on Wayne. Scotty going to the hole is a force! Spiderman has skills & Hall will be a star. The three walkons are very gutty and smart players, McBee can shoot it Bone is a solid 5-7 min a game guy and Pearl is a good defence and rebounder. We let Cam & Melvin come back for depth and earn their minutes! Go Vols

I think even more credit needs to go to Bobby Maze. I noted last year and at the beginning of the season that people thought he was a weak link and that he didn't play good defense. I totally disagreed then and yesterday just fortified my thinking. It looks to me like he always gives 110% on D and I like his skills as a point guard. What a great game yesterday. Why didn't my DVR know that I wanted it to tape the last five minutes of the game too!! :-)

You did say that. Bobby has impressed me all year. I just hope he gets to keep his minutes when Goins returns so he can keep his rhythm. I read where the other 3 will be back probably late next week and I hope this will not affect the chemistry the team has built. I am also impressed with Woolridge's progress as well as Hall's.

bigdisbig writes:

Bobby Maze played awesome! He deserves to start every game even if the thugs return. Coach Pearl should have JP Prince shooting 100 freethrows every practice until he can hit at least 70. His freethrow shooting has got to improve if UT survives the SEC. Skyler or Bobby needs to school him on how to shoot. His shots are like meteors....no arch.

Thank you Vols and everyone that was at the TBA for showing what the REAL Orange Pride is all about!!!!

Go Big Orange!!!!!

Not to pick on Tyler but maybe he was just better as a 2 or 3 option like he was his first year behind CL & JS. I hope he gets his act together because in the right situation he can make a living playing ball somewhere, he is still better than 98% of us posting on this site!

Would much rather see Prince playing tough D, and foul out, than the O'le defense which we saw at USC.

He dosent know because B.maze dont get on this board. Im not saying Tyler is a bad guy.I met His Mom & Step Dad & they are very nice... Tyler is very friendly to my family. Im just saying that Tyler is not a team player or a leader. When it comes down to it 2 Me, I think Tyler is selfish. When your winning it should not matter if your teammate has a better game than you..

That's because he is just telling us what he knows without yelling at us that we are idiots for not knowing what he knows when he stands around behind the bench hobnobbing with the hangers-on.

Have to agree with his other statement about the other three. If Smith was a cancer and they were hanging out with him you would expect they would be of the same cancerous ilk. Order up some plutonium from Oak Ridge to put in their dorm rooms.

Thank you for confirming what many on here believed. That everyone was standing around waiting on Tyler and Tyler wouldn't pull the trigger. Oops, my bad pun.

Keep Bobby's head on straight. You seem to know what's up. Thanks Uncle.
