The one word that sums up how many University of Tennessee students felt Wednesday about the departure of head football coach Lane Kiffin: betrayed.

"I feel like we were used - we've been taken advantage of," said Whit Shofner, a junior in civil engineering. "Maybe that stuff flies in California, but you can't come to Tennessee and treat people like this. We put our faith in him."

Wednesday was the first day of spring semester classes, but the mood on campus was glum and intensely focused on football rather than classrooms.

The Rock - covered with vulgar anti-Kiffin slogans and images Tuesday night - had been repainted by Wednesday morning.

At noon, the student artwork included what appeared to be a homecoming float relic, an image of Kiffin affixed to cardboard. Spray-painted on it were the words, "Heil Lane," with a X over Kiffin's face.

By day's end, the Rock was repainted again, proclaiming, "It's Time to quit" - a parody of UT's theme slogan during football season.

"UT is all about traditions, and to up and leave like that just goes against what we're all about," said Kelly Carter, a senior in chemistry.

Bart Weitering, a UT sophomore majoring in physics and geology, said "it's pretty bad timing."

"In the end, it's part of the business, but it really puts us in a bind," he said.

Added Greg Dowell, a UT sophomore in communications studies: "I'm disappointed. We were hoping Kiffin would come in and bring in a new era, but he kind of abandoned us."

Adam Martin, a freshman in computer engineering, said he "couldn't believe" the news - though he was a bit conflicted.

"I'm a Seattle Seahawks fan, so to see the USC (University of Southern California) coach go there, then see my college coach go to USC, it's kind of weird for me," Martin said.

LeAnne Francis, a senior majoring in chemistry, said it could "take a while" to rebuild a successful team - something that would require "more motivation and leadership."

"But we have the potential of being incredible," she said.

Many students, including Francis, said the next coach should be someone with Tennessee ties and "someone who knows the traditions."

"We'll find someone better," said Zach Edwards, a sophomore in history. "But we need someone associated with the school."

While a crowd of students were passionate Tuesday night in expressing their displeasure over Kiffin's departure announcement, they weren't destructive.

"There were no criminal arrests," UT Police Department Capt. Keith Lambert said Wednesday.

Some students repeatedly set paper and T-shirts ablaze, prompting officers to detain the students, he said. Those individuals could face disciplinary action from the Office of Student Affairs.

Shofner was part of the crew that painted the Rock Tuesday night, and he said the news of Kiffin's departure "brought (students) together."

"We all had a bunch of anger and energy and wanted to expend it," he said.

Lambert said the protests over the resignation of Kiffin erupted at shift change, allowing UTPD to pour maximum resources onto the campus. He said up to 15 officers handled the crowd.

"They probably had us outnumbered 50 to one," Lambert said.

Although estimates Tuesday night placed the crowd size at nearly 1,000, Lambert said about 500 students were actively engaged in the protests.

"The crowd was very manageable," Lambert said. "We asked them to move and they moved, so you can't say they were an unruly crowd."

However, the crowd of students caused enough concern that local police provided security to the coach and his family throughout their last night in Knoxville. Lambert said campus officers drove Kiffin home from the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center.

"We thought it would be best if we just took him home in one of our cruisers," Lambert said. "Our big thing was trying to mitigate (the situation), and try to get what the crowd was upset about away from the crowd."

Knox County Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones also confirmed that his office dispatched a deputy to Kiffin's home in a West Knox County gated community after the coach's wife, Layla Kiffin, called E-911 to report suspicious vehicles in the area.

"We assured her that there would be somebody close," said Jones, who kept a deputy in a cruiser posted at the Kiffins' home overnight.

Jones said there were no further incidents reported.

Hayes Hickman, Dave Hooker and Don Jacobs contributed to this report.

Being a Long time Bama Fan I know exactly how you guy's feel. I have never felt this bad for a rival team. Partly because of the way Kiffen left, but mostly because I know exactly how you feel. I have lived through this same thing not to long ago with coach fraud. I hope you guy's get a great coach this time and get back on top soon. God bless! RTR

I concur. Good job rolltide2331, and congrats on the NC. The shock is wearing off and the anger subsiding. We will get a strong coach. Not knowing is the hard part. GBO

This comment is what makes the SEC great and the same reason that I rooted for Bama last Thursday. Congrats on the win and thanks for the respect!

Thanks to all our TRUE SEC brothers!

I don't have to tell the Vol Nation how bad it was for us Bama fans over the last decade. All is not lost and the Nation is nowhere near in the shambles that we where in. You will come back stronger and be the force that you have always been. Good luck on the hire and I know it will be a giant step forward.

Frankly I'm not sorry to see him go--he was an egomaniac. In the long run we'll be better for his leaving, but for the short term, the timing of it irks me and what really drives me crazy is Oregon calling recruits and telling them to hold off on going to class or signing and trying to recruit them to USC, even after the liar Kiffin said they wouldn't do that.

As your name implies, you are not a part of the UT family and therefore are not expected to have an accurate knowledge of all the things that go into coaching changes. The only matter you are close to the mark on is Wade Houston...but Don DeVoe was fired not to get Houston but to try and find a coach that could win more often than he lost. Go back to worrying about your own coaching uncertainty. Go find your likeminded friends on the Gainesville paper's website devoted to UF sports...oh, right, you losers don't have anything like this. putz

Well then don't call yourself an SEC fan. You aren't an SEC fan, you're a florida fan. There's not a classy school in this conference and florida is certainly no exception to that. Especially your fans, I can safely say that florida fans are without a doubt some of the least classiest fans in the nation along with ohio state fans, i can speak from experience when i went to a UF-UT game in gainesville, and your ignorant comment only reinforces my opinion. Yes, true Karma is a little b##ch, and you'll get yours too troll. Enjoy searching for your next head coach as well after NSD.

I will repeat this and believe this until the day I die: Kiffin's leaving was a blessing. UT football is way too special to be coached by a man with no values or integrity. In the short term our program will suffer, but in the long term we have a chance to restore pride into a program that stands for much more than wins and losses -- UT football was drifting way off course with Lane Kiffin and I thought so from day one.

Did anyone see the press conference from USC? Kiffin is so conceited it's pitiful.First time I have seen the Boy smile.

I appreciate the sentiments of the folks who really want to see good football and good competition. I saw some great ball during my time on the hill. We won some.. lost some... hated teams.. talked sh*t here and there...

bottom line was that we knew that going into a game was gonna be war every saturday.

that is my hope.

Talk about class, gator?

Talk about Spurrier's big mouth, talk about Urban Meyer suspending Spikes for half a game against VANDERBILT for trying to gouge a bulldog player's eyes while he was caught in a dog pile, talk about Riley Cooper's holding that resulted in your only TD against LSU, and what about your gift from the refs from Arkansas?

I have had a profound respect for Alabama as a rival every year. But Gators? Talk about class.

You come on a UT Vols Message board and make a name just so you can share your less than welcome opinion and exploit our misfortune as nothing more than insults?

All of the problems you have need to be addressed with Mike Hamilton who is currently on the hot seat. Not the entire school. But big mouths are never synonymous with sharp intellect.

So keep talking, you'll never be Alabama, and soon enough, you'll remember why we're rivals and not just a stepping stone for Florida.
