Coach search at full speed

Athletic director Mike Hamilton talks to reporters about the resignation of football coach Lane Kiffin Wednesday, Jan 13, 2010 at the University of Tennessee.

Mike Hamilton didn't reveal any specifics.

The Tennessee athletic director wouldn't talk about travel plans, didn't describe ideal candidates and most certainly would not reveal his short-list of possible replacements for former coach Lane Kiffin.

But as the secrecy and silence swirled around Hamilton's second search for a coach in 14 months on Wednesday, at least one target was willing to step forward and admit he was involved in the process. That doesn't make interim coach Kippy Brown more appealing than Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp or Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, but it did earn him distinction as the only one publicly involved in the bid to take over at UT.

"Well, I was told I am (a candidate)," Brown said. "I think that I'm a legitimate candidate for the job, I do. And the reason I say that is I'm very confident in my ability to coach, to recruit, I've proven that when I was here before.

"I've coached at Tennessee on SEC championship teams, I've gone into out-of-state areas and brought back All-American recruits. I've been there and done that, and I feel confident in my ability to get it done. Yes, I think I'm a legitimate candidate."

Whether that ultimately makes him the ideal one for Hamilton remains to be seen, but it shouldn't take long to receive a verdict.

Despte the lack of many details from him, Hamilton did make clear he can't afford to waste time with recruits scheduled for visits this week and National Signing Day creeping up on Feb. 3. An announcement on Kiffin's successor could come as early as Friday and ideally no later than Sunday, putting Hamilton under the gun to get through the interview process quickly.

"I can assure you that just as our players slap that sign that they will give their all for Tennessee today, that is what we are doing right now," Hamilton said. "The search process has begun. It began as soon as I was notified of coach Kiffin leaving for the University of Southern California.

"I don't like to put too many timetables on anything of this nature, but everybody knows that we are about to hit a live recruiting period again and this is an absolutely critical time for our program as it relates to wrapping up recruiting and approaching signing day. I would rather be a day late to ensure that we've got the right person. However, that being said and because of the work that has already been done and the work that is being done and the work that will be done, we are going to bring this to closure as quickly as possible to find the right person for The University of Tennessee."

The Vols appear to have narrowed their sights on a few guys who fit the bill, with Muschamp and Calhoun seemingly generating the most interest. However, late Wednesday, Muschamp looks like he will remain Texas’ coach-in-waiting behind Mack Brown. He issued a statement through a Texas spokesperson saying, “I”m happy at Texas and plan to be here for a long time.”

Calhoun has been largely silent so far, and he neither confirmed nor denied interest in the UT job to The Denver Post.

Former UT offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe of Duke, Connecticut coach Randy Edsall and Brown figure to also be in the mix, and collectively the pool is at least a reflection of the cachet the job still holds nationally.

"There's been a lot of doom and gloom around here, and I don't buy into that," Brown said. "With all the doom and gloom that's going on around here, this is still Tennessee. It was Tennessee before I got here, it's Tennessee now and it will be Tennessee long after I'm gone. That's special.

"It's not the coaches. It's the fanbase, it's the institution and it's the players that make this thing special. That's where I stand, that's how I feel, and it's not doom and gloom. We're going to make the best of this situation, we're going to have some recruits in this weekend and it's going to be full-speed ahead. Whoever Mike decides to go with, we'll make the best of it. I'm glad to be here, I can't foresee the future and what's going to happen, but right now I'm glad to be at Tennessee."

Even if he doesn't get to keep the head-coaching job permanently, Brown indicated he plans on staying there anyway.

But whether he's becoming the boss or meeting a new one, sooner is better for everybody involved.

"What we have to do is let this thing take its course," Brown said. "There's going to be some (recruits) that get mad and say they're not coming now, but then you hire a head coach and get him in place - all of a sudden Tennessee looks good again. So that's where we are right now. It's just going to take a little time until we get a head coach in place to massage those feelings that they have.

"Hopefully the head coach is in place though, because it's a little awkward when you bring them in for a visit and the head coach is not in place. Hopefully Mike gets that done at least by Saturday."

It could be earlier than that. The clock is ticking.

Kippy has about 20 years on Muschamp so I don't see him as a coach-in-waiting type. But he said if he isn't the next head coach he'd like to stay on the staff if given the opportunity.

I haven't really heard Gus Malzahn being a candidate. He should be on the short list. He will get a HC job soon. Offensive guys want to play for him. Check his wiki page. Shout his name from the rooftops. He could salvage the recruiting class. PLEASE Hamilton give him a call. He's the next BIG thing.

I loved Fulmer while he was at UT, but we need a younger HC who can recruit today's athletes and who has a fire in the gut. Fulmer would be fine as an AD, he loves UT and would have UT's best interest at heart but you can't go back and bring him in as HC. His ship has sailed.

Why do people always bring up Gruden's name when he has never shown any interest in the UT job or any other college job for that matter. It's about as far fetched as tossing Spurrier's name around.

Kiffin is the perfect symbol of here-and-now modernism as manifested in athletics: complete self-absorbtion, self-service, and self-importance. In the end, all these are VICES, every one.
What is most important now, at least to for a venerable institution like the University of Tennessee, is to get the right coach, a man who melds well with our institutions, who recruits the student-athlete who melds well with our institutions and standards, and who is self-assured enough to make a difference, a part of which is to commit himself for a generation of student-athletes (four years).
In the final analysis, Lane Kiffin was none of these, a bad hire.
Mike Hamilton should quickly reassess his metrics. The improbable impact of a few recruits fades to a dot in this analysis, notwithstanding myopic media hysteria. Another bad hire and any objective assessment shows him the door.

Oh please, hammy is an idiot. He let the youngest HC in college football use him like a door mat. Hammy needs to go and this university could do no better than to have Fulmer as his replacement. Cutcliff is a great coach and we would be lucky to have him. I'm ready for some loyalty to TN to be back on the field.

Bring in Muschamp as HC and offer UM's Mark Whipple as OC and asscoiate HC. Muschamp's recruiting cred and defensive coaching prowess will help retain what's left of our defensive commits. Whipple's resume as the guy who guided Pittsburgh to a Superbowl, coached Ben Roethelsberger, and turned around Miami's Jacory Harris into a dangerous weapon at QB. Dump David Reeves (Kiffin's nepotism got you hired, it also gets you fired) but retain Jim Chaney, Lance Thompson, Willie Mack Garza, and Jim Clegg. Hire Biasaccia from Tampa Bay for ST and RBs. They won't be as brash a group but I'll wager they'll be more effective.

Fulmer as AD ... Hmmm ...
He "lost the fire" and the stomach for disciplining his student-athletes. His teenage players flipped him off when he was head coach (video evidence). How can he possibly manage adult head coaches? Fulmer is an honest and apparently forthright man without the gumption to lead effectively. Honesty and forthrightness are certainly in high demand right now, with Lane Kiffin having just showed his colors, but it takes more to be good enough for the University of Tennessee.
If we want to be happy and content in the end, just map out Pat Summit's attributes and find her male match.

Yeah, let's hire a Tennessee man...one that can lose but with Tennessee Pride. Of course. Majors, Fulmer, Chavis, Sanders, and of course, remember when actor David Keith roamed the sidelines? Make him a coach too. We can be like the Average Joe's in Dodgeball. Then we can rise above ALL OBSTACLES and UPSET Bama or Fla every 5 years. "But TDVOL, they won 10 years ago and they loved Tennessee". So the freak what. Did they run the program into the ground? "No, that was Lane Kiffin. He went to a Bowl Game, NEVER got beat by a Wyoming or a Memphis, had a Top 10 recruiting class, and was about to have another...wait, oh he was getting players here before he pulled a Judas Iscariot. Maybe you are right!"

Move on. As far as I know, there are NO Tennessee guys that are great head coach candidates. And, great players don't necessarily make great coaches.

It is not my style to be a Smart @$$, but just remember this. Bruce Pearl wasn't a Tennessee guy...but he sure is now. Our school is good enough to MAKE one, not re-tread one. And, if you just want to re-live the Good Ole Days, there are a whole lot of DVD's available for you to buy. I am sure some of them are in Black and White. Otherwise, let's look forward.

Thank You! Thank You! We have yet another fan with sense. Why in the world are we EVEN mentioning Phil Fulmer? Have the freakin' intestinal fortitude to go forward.

Fulmer took us to another level. But it was and still is time to pass the torch.

I still support Hamilton, but Pat Summit is the BEST choice to replace him. She is hardcore, loyal, and a winner. And, the best thing about her is, she didn't quit after winning her 1st, or 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th, or 5th, or 6th, or 7th,(you get the picture)...National Championship. Or when the 3 point line came in. Or when the shot clock came in.

Dang, I hope she reads these posts because there is a whole-lotta love for her.
