Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun celebrates in the final seconds of the second half of the Armed Forces Bowl NCAA college football game against Houston, on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in Fort Worth, Texas. Air Force defeated Houston 47-20.

Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun has scheduled a meeting with his players at 5:50 p.m., according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

There were no indications what the meeting concerns.

The report cites multiple sources confirming the meeting, though the subject matter was not disclosed. Vols athletic director Mike Hamilton has also not responded to any requests for comment since his press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Calhoun was widely considered to be the runner-up when Lane Kiffin was hired 14 months ago, and he had another successful season with the Falcons after getting passed over by Hamilton -- who could be getting a mulligan with the bright, offensive-minded coach.

His teams play well...usually playing above their talent level. If we can real in a good defensive mind/name, this could work.

mmmmmmm......let me guess what this is about! I think we can put 2 and 2 together. I hope he doesnt bring the triple option with him. Tyler bray can't run the option with 5.4 speed!!

Seriously doubt Calhoun would impose option offense at UT. Remember his AF team at Neyland Stadium? Played with passion & discipline. Not my first choice (that's Kippy), but he'd do a terrific job at Tennessee.

Triple option may get you no worse than 4th place in the Mountain West, but it won't get you anywhere in the SEC. Move over Vandy and Kentucky, make room for us.

Dumb AZZZ's.....he only ran the option at Air Force where he had to.....everywhere else it has been a pro set......bone up on your facts before you slam him!

I've heard Tommy West's name thrown out and possibly Lance Thompson if the new coach decides to keep some of the staff that's still there, but from what I understand that consists of Lance and Kippy who have done amazing damage control.

Let me be the first to say....."Welcome To Rocky Top" Coach Calhoun.
We are happy to have you as our coach.

vet4ut writes:

Please people. Do 5 seconds of research before you post "no option". He's coached high octane offenses in college and has been a pro-coordinator. He runs that system because it works best for a service academy.

I think it would be a good hire. Muschamp was another mercenary. And UT is not as hot a job right now. We need to get a solid coach who wants to be here.

Check his resume. Calhoun is an NFL guy. My bet is he'd run a pro style here. He adjusted to the triple option for AF. I could certainly be wrong, but given his NFL experience, I put my money on a pro style offense.

This guy is a great pro style offense coach.
He would be a good hire, he has used the option at Air Force because it fit the players he had better but at Denver and at Wake Forest he was a great pro style offensive coach.

Calhoun is trully a pro-style guy....OC of the Houston Texans and was an assistant at Denver too...by the way....Air Force Academy has to small of players to run a pro-style offense...believe me when I say we will still be a pro-style team.

AirForceLawVol writes:

not sure if he's ready for the SEC, but I thought the same thing about Urban Meyer. Seems to have a decent record doing well with subpar talent (as compared to what he could get at UT). I see loyalty as a positive for him. He's an Academy grad and leaving the Academy. No one would blame him for leaving the Academy for a top tier job, but given that his alma mater is a second tier job, we don't have to worry about him being swayed by his school like with Kiffin or probably Muschamp.

Discipline is likely a strong characteristic as well. He'll likely be attentive to the perception he, his coaches, and players project (and we could use some image building now).

With a strong DC, this guy might be the answer.

VolFanFtl writes:

Would not be my first choice.

That said, we won't have to worry about him embarrassing Tennessee.

He really is the anti-Kiffin.

riverosa writes:

His players play hard for him. Lets give the guy a chance before we pass judgement. Any body is better than Kiffin.

asleep#212036 writes:

He has said many times he runs the option because that gives his team the best chance to win. Translation? Less talented team often win by scheme and that's what he does. I heard he really likes a pro-style offense and would love to run it but just can't at AFA. All the pundits say he is a great offensive mind (not just an option guy) and would be a steal for UT. All depends on his coordinators and his recruiting ability. He's not used to dealing with thugs and let's face it, the key to recruiting in big-time football is to find the thugs you can control and work with. No thugs is just not an option. I hope he doesn't think it is or we're Vandy with a bigger (half-empty) stadium. Go Vols!!

tnsportsman writes:

Calhoun knows and has coached the 'Pro-style' offense very well. He is a good coach with morals.

But we need Kippy Brown now! Back to TENNESSEE BASICS WITH KIPPY!

If we don't have a chance for the 'Big Star Name' stay close to home this time with Kippy!

GO VOLS ALWAYS UNTIL MY LAST BREATH!

volzzz1 writes:

He only ran the flex at air force because that was the best bet with the personnel he had. He is a pro-style guy, and that is what he would continue to do at Tennessee. IMO would be a good hire. Has proven he can do "more with less" with the players he had at air force, and would bring good discipline. Sounds very similar to the situation fla was in when they brought in meyer. That seemed to work out pretty good?

The_Greater_Pumpkin writes:

His preferred offense is not the option. He just uses that because he is limited in his tallent. It is a scheme system to fit the size and athleticism of his players.

Big difference. All of the Air Force players are walk-ons. They were not going to the AF academy for the coach, they were going for the school.

We would not be affecting their recruiting at all.
