Former Tennessee coach Kippy Brown has taken a job with the Seattle Seahawks.

Brown was a candidate for UT's open head coaching vacancy before the Vols hired Derek Dooley on Friday.

Brown was hired in December to replace Frank Wilson as receivers coach. Wilson left UT to join the staff at LSU.

To say this is ironic would be an understatement.
Why was he not retained or did he not want to be retained?

gotvols writes:

So, the mighty Kippy Brown, so loyal and wanting to stay at UT regardless if he was HC or as an assistant has left. This is why he was the last interview. Pete had already talked to him and he changed his tune. Mike Hamilton had his reasons. This may also be why he was not truly offered the HC position. He is going to follow the money just like anybody else would do and that is why he will never be a HC. His loyalty is only skin deep. We hired the right guy in Dooley.

Wish you would have been UT new HC but the powersto be thought not. Anywas good luck, you will always be a Vol!

Bummer. But I can't blame him. He was only here a few weeks.
The sooner coach Dooley gets his staff built the better. I'm sure he's hard at it right now! He needs to somehow salvage this year's recruiting class the best he can. Go Vols!

I don't know why we didn't just hire Jim Mora Jr. to complete this whole sordid mess.

volshogs#284810 writes:

I hate that he is gone, but I'll hate it much more if we learn he was run off. This will not help stabilize recruiting (duh). In any case, so much for all that loyalty rhetoric. Dooley said he hoped the staff wanted to stay. I guess Kippy didn't want to after all.

If he is going to the Hawks he already had it lined up yesterday if his interview didn't prove productive. We have to remember that these guys are Pro's. They just like us , "Get it while the getting is good".

I think he might be more comfortable in the pro's anyway.
Good luck to him. I wish him the best.

Hate to see him go but that was his choice. I am sure if he wanted to stay he could have. Hard to hire coaches and recruit at the same time..Our coach walked into a mess and will take some time to get it straight. Reaves just had to go to get clk out of the picture.

so much for kippy being loyal to UT. I'm glad CDD was hired over brown, who obviously is an NFL man.

SmokeyHowls writes:

Sorry to see you go Coach. I don't blame you though. You were not treated with the respect you deserve. Another reason to fire Mike Hamilton. He treated this great Tennessean like a second class coach, when indeed Kippy Brown is an A+ First Class Coach an Man of Intergrity and love for this University. Sounds like Mike Hamilton doesn't care about people that were here before he was AD ( Phillip Fulmer, Kippy Broen) Fire Mike Hamilton now.

I'm glad he is gone, that is the last of em.

I can't imagine him being loyal to us anyway.

Jimmy Hymes reported on WNML that Kippy was unhappy with the process. I take that to mean it was reported that Hamilton had found his man but was going to 'interview' Kippy. It sounds as if some disrespect was shown. This is based on the time line, I believe,on WVLT Friday night, after the introduction of our new coach, showing who got interviewed and when.
In any case let us join together and support Coach Dooley.

I wonder if he was released,or did he just pull a 'KIFFIN'?If he just left, then so much of his big speech about loving Tennessee and Vol football. Also,if Ambles is talking about following Benedict Arnold to USC, how in the world was he even smart enough to graduate high school?

Heard on Knox radio that he was asked if it was because he was not named hc, "he said no, but it was the process"

VolinCalif writes:

Well let's hope the rest of the staff will stay put. CDD doesn't need anymore neg's while trying to hold this recruiting class together. Besides I really like JC. don't think that Lane really let him coach the Off.

coalvol writes:

If UT did indeed "interview" Kippy while picking up Coach Dooley that is sorry as h*ll and I wouldn't blame Kippy for bolting. On the other hand it doesn't sound like he was totally committed to staying at UT and his talk about not wanting to move around was BS.

Great post except for your last line. We have no way of knowing if Dooley is the "right guy." When he is holding up an SEC Championship trophy, then we'll know. I'll give him a chance and be a loyal Vol Fan, but this man has a long, long road ahead of him. His first test is salvaging a recruiting class. I mean, that's why we rushed so quickly to get him in place right? We still need to be a top 25 recruiting class based on the pace at which this hired was made.

kabulvol writes:

Kippy Brown, had Kiffin not left, would no more have been the UT coach than I would have. Nothing personal against him. But, he wasn't brought to UT to be the head coach. Circumstances but him as the interim. He can be upset with the process but deep down he should have known he wasn't going to be the head coach. And, unless he left the Seahawks for a lot more money, so much for all that UT loyalty.

Hate to see Kippy go but if that is what makes him happy, more power to him. I hate the fact that he is going to Seattle to be with the ex-USC coach. I long for the days that no one on this sight uses the letters USC in anything. We all need to wash our hands of the Kiffin's and USC. Of course when they are on probation it will be fun to make fun of them!

Hamilton treated Kippy the same way that Fulmer treated Trooper. If they knew from the outset that they weren't going to offer them the job say so from the outset.

Coach Brown is a class act, and I really hate that he is leaving. He stepped forward to help Mike Hamilton and UT out of a major jam, and they really stabbed him in the back. The announcement on Dooley was out before Kippy was even interviewed. Hamilton is NOT a class act in any way. I wish Coach Dooley and I hope that Kippy and his family will have a great time in Seattle.

And the dominos continue to fall. Odd KB going to the Sehawks. Just yesterday I was wondering if UT would reach out to Mora (fired Sehawk coach).

Now it's the Dooley era. Wasn't my first choice (and neither was Kiffin) but he's da man now and I hope he has a long and successful career with the Vols. Good start in the presser. The next two weeks will be interesting.

What is the source of this information? Could it be the same source that provided the brilliant nugget that Cutt was assembling a staff for UT? I am not going to believe this until I see confirmation. I checked the Seahawk page and they do not have anything to this effect.

Agreed.....what happened to all the "pro-tennessee" stuff that Kippy was saying before he wasn't hired as coach....goes to show you NO ONE can be trusted......GO DOOLEY!

GBOinGA writes:

Can't blame him a bit. He was not treated respectfully by Hamilton in the whole 'interview' process. Anyone with a shred of self-respect would have left under these circumstances. I'm sorry to see him go. No idea if he was HC material, but he showed some real class, and that's been in short supply recently.

I don`t think Dooley would have released Brown this quickly.I think this was a deal that was in the works before Dooley was hired.Pete Carrol has probably been talking to Kippy about coming to Seattle.Man, I never thought I`d dislike any team as much as I do Florida. But right now,USC is # 1 on my list!USC and those connected to USC have almost crippled Vol football. That scum-sucking Kiffin had better NEVER show his face in the state of Tennessee again. He just thought Pahokee,Fla.was hostile. He ain`t seen hostile yet!

The start of the "process". All in or get out. No one is more important than the program. Players or coaches. No public interviews or comments unless they come from the man. Get real comfortable with the team concept.
