Tennessee Men's Basketball
Early Saturday afternoon, the SEC East men's basketball race boasted three perfect records.
Kentucky hadn't lost all year and was No. 1-in-waiting. Tennessee took a 3-0 league record to Georgia, where it always wins.
Only Vanderbilt was in jeopardy, trailing lowly Auburn by 16 points in Nashville.
But when the smoke cleared Wednesday night, what a different tale the standings told.
And then there was one. And the one is Vanderbilt. For now.
After an 85-76 win at Thompson-Boling Arena, the Commodores are 5-0 and looking down on everyone else in the volatile SEC East.
After getting upset at South Carolina on Tuesday night, No. 1 Kentucky is No. 2- or No. 3- in-waiting.
Tennessee's Cinderella ride since the Jan. 1 roster purge has run aground. The Vols lost at Georgia for the first time under Bruce Pearl and, now, at home to Vandy for the first time under Pearl.
"This league is gonna beat each other up a little bit,'' Pearl said. "It's going to be a battle. It's going to be a struggle.
"Which team will handle success? Which team will handle challenges?''
Handling success is Vandy's issue now.
The Commodores - who, by the way, rallied to beat Auburn by double figures on Saturday - are 5-0 to open SEC play for the first time since 1964-65.
Bonus points: They have three road wins among their five SEC successes.
The jubilation ringing loud and clear in the Vandy locker room Wednesday night was hard earned. But it better be short-lived.
"This league,'' said coach Kevin Stallings, "is so hard.
"Look what we have now.''
Uh, that would be a trip to Lexington on Saturday.
"My guess,'' said Stallings, "is they're a little bit angry.''
That's my guess, too. Kentucky's first week atop the college basketball rankings in seven years will end when the new poll comes out.
But Vanderbilt might be good enough to take on the Wildcats under any terms.
The Commodores are experienced, they're deep and they're more athletic and more physical than most Vandy teams of yore.
"We have a physical team,'' said Stallings after a 40-minute war that featured 46 fouls and 78 rebounds. "A year ago, we could be taken advantage of in a game like that.''
The fouls were evenly split, 23 each way. But they affected Tennessee more because of Pearl's depleted bench.
In the first 125 seconds of the second half, both Scotty Hopson and Kenny Hall picked up their third and fourth fouls.
"Vanderbilt does a good job of initiating contact,'' Pearl said.
Vanderbilt does a good job of several things, such as extending defense and knocking down tough shots.
And, not least of all, taking care of the basketball.
Jermaine Beal, the 'Dores' senior point guard, played 38 minutes with zero turnovers.
"That,'' said Stallings, "tells you just about all you need to know.''
If Vandy's issue is handling success, Tennessee's is handling adversity.
In the Vols' two losses, the defense has withered. Perimeter shooting is still scarce - don't look for J.P. Prince to knock down a couple of treys every night.
Stallings, who rarely goes out of his way to heap praise on his arch-rival, lauded Pearl's ability to keep Tennessee in contention despite the loss of All-SEC forward Tyler Smith and backup center Brian Williams.
"I told (Pearl) before the game, he's done a terrific job, under the circumstances they've had,'' Stallings said.
"But they're still a good team. I don't think many teams will come in here and win.''
Florida, which drilled Georgia on Wednesday night, is the next one to get a shot at it Sunday.
And when the smoke clears Sunday night after another weekend of combat, the standings might well look jumbled again.
But for a couple of days, anyhow, Vanderbilt is the team to catch. The game is afoot.

Vandy is pretty good and their 3 road wins are impressive. They will be tough to catch since most of their 2nd half conference games will be in Memorial Gym. If they pull off the upset Saturday, they will all but lock up one of the first 2 positions. They just do not lose very often at home.

I havent seen a beating like that since someone put a banana down my pants and turned a monkey loose.

Vandy has a good team that has players that have been there and they know how to play as a team. They have good 3 point shooters and guys that don't turn the ball over. Right now they are just playing better then Tenn. Will see how they do at KY.

You make some good points, as usual. The game was pretty rough, all right, but some of our guys get too many touch fouls, especially Hopson and Hall. Williams was bad about that when he was playing, too. I'm not saying they aren't committing them, because they are. What I AM saying is that they just reach out and visibly touch a guy without affecting his shot or move. If you find yourself in a disadvantageous position, you can just back away and let the guy have that one or you can step up and whack him good. What you CAN'T do is make "gentle", late contact so no one can say you didn't "try" to defend him; you pop him a good one to preclude the "and-1".
Several of the guys didn't show up last night. Woolridge has gone back into hibernation. Skylar took too many quick shots and had some bad turnovers. Bone played too much for what he was getting done out there. Tatum isn't helping much yet. For those who think Steven Pearl is getting too much run, tell Woolridge to play with a little energy for a change and tell Hall not to get in such easy foul trouble. As for JP, last night we mostly got the "good" JP, but his stupid techs just sucked the life out the arena and the team. Wayne was a warrior on defense and on the boards, but his knee betrayed him on offense. He missed those free-throws, IMHO, because his knee-bend didn't feel the same as when he was grooving them. I had a similar injury once, so I know how it affects a shot even if it doesn't hurt THAT much.
The guys can't go into Saturday thinking that it is "only" Florida, who we "own". WE--that is, THIS team--doesn't OWN anybody! The fact that they keep playing the games is the reason why you have to reestablish your claim of ownership every time out. Right now, the guys have to get hold of themselves and decide how the rest of this season is going to go. A couple of the guys have to ask themselves why they are out there if they aren't going to do what they have to do. If CBP has any notion of tangible recognition for the job he did holding the team together after the New Year's debacle, he had better get a grip on these guys, or they will be in for a few more of these long nights in TBA.

UT just ran into a deep fundamentally sound and physical team last night. As much as it pains me to say Vandy is good this year and by the end of the year may be great. The Vols may not lose another game this year at TBA.

This was a very tough loss, not much of anything worse than losing at home to Vandy, even if they are good. Walking out of TBA last night I felt like I wanted to puke. I hope this isn't like last year when we got our a**es kicked at home 5 times.

The comparison of Scotty to Yarbrough is horribly apt! I used to watch Yarbrough and wondered if the guy had a pulse! Scotty gets in foul trouble because he commits all those "excuse me" touch fouls. You're either ON the guy or get out of there, Scotty! Don't be half-azz!

Jenkins was never in play for UT. He's a smart kid that always wanted to go to Vandy. He led the nation in scoring last year in high school and is going to be a star in this league. I wish he was a Vol too, but we never had a chance.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
Correct. I remember reading about Jenkins' recruitment, and he said Vandy had always been his dream school. But, MAN!, he sure does have a nice stroke!
