Jackie Areson broke a school record and gave Tennessee's women a third indoor track and field NCAA automatic qualifier with a victory in the 3,000 meters Saturday.
Areson broke the school indoor record with a clocking of 9:07.77 at the Penn State National Invitational. Patty Wiegand's indoor record of 9:09.83 had stood since 1991.
"Jackie has been showing signs of being able to do something like this,'' said J.J. Clark, director of track and field. "Being able to and doing it are two different things.
"That record had been around a long time, so it is very rewarding to see her break one like that and also run the top time in the country.''
UT's previous NCAA automatic qualifiers are Phoebe Wright and Chanelle Price. Price won the 1,000 meters Saturday while Wright finished second in the 500.
Men's Track: In a meet in Lexington, Ky., Robert Rasnick picked up a provisional NCAA mark by clearing 17-0.75 in the pole vault.
Evander Wells lowed his provisional 200 time to 20.99, which ranks third in the nation. Wells also lowered his 60-meter provisional time to 6.66.
Annie Alexander's shot-put mark of 52-6.50 took third place and improved her provisional standing to fifth place nationally.

Congrats to the Lady Vols Track team! Will somebody please build an indoor facility so the track team will have a decent place to train? They consistently win or place in SEC and NCAA meets yet they must train in a ridiculously outdated facility. Just think what they could do and who UT could recruit if they had a great indoor track!

true enough. not having an indoor facility like most of the rest of the SEC is a hinderance to recruituing.
