David Climer: Derek Dooley gets a win vs. Kiffin, USC with lineman transfer

— Turns out that Derek Dooley is a little more cutthroat than it first appeared.

By cherry-picking a defensive lineman off Southern Cal's roster, Dooley not only fortified a position of need at Tennessee, he also rubbed Lane Kiffin's nose in it.

Don't underestimate the importance of the latter. There's no better way for Dooley to endear himself to many UT fans than to punk-slap Kiffin, the Vols' one-and-done football coach in 2009.

There could be more where that came from. The story goes that when sanctions against Southern Cal were announced two weeks ago, UT faxed a letter to Trojans officials listing the names of players the Vols might approach about transferring.

They claimed on local news in Chattanooga last night that the faxed list included the names of EVERY junior and senior on USC's team. Perhaps a tongue-in-cheek joke on Dooley's part, or perhaps the TV station is just trying to be funny.

Faxing a letter amounts to a "punk-slap" of Kiffin and being a "cut throat"? A bit of an overstatement I think.

I think too many are reading more into this than really is. I just don't believe Dooley would spend so much energy into getting Kiff's goat as is an opportunity to raid a talented pantry like USCw. One would have to be living under a rock not to realize the talent pool in So Cal.
The circumstances being what they are, brings a subtle smirk to my face as I was indifferent to LK's methodology until he and staff told recruits on campus not to attend class. That was incorrigible IMO. Is there some karma going on here? Maybe, but again I think most everyone is reading too much in a situation where Dooley is attempting to find talent, wherever it may be. If this situation had happened a year ago, everyone knows LK's motive would have been more for the headlines than the talent. I just don't see this being Dooley's motive.

Let the media pundits put up "punk slap" and other terms. CDD, just get us the best players possible and let's go surprise some unwary teams because we are so"down" this year after Coach LK Twinkie and Co.s' departure! I would love to see more USCers in Orange and White. Let us wait and see. Keep the phone lines busy coaches. Who knows how many we can land? GBO!

Let's hope Mitch Mustain does NOT look at UT. That guy has no peer among current college players as a selfish self-promoter and opportunist. His record is only slightly less slimey than LK's itself. I, for one, would rather see him stay at USC, if he can, and away from the exemplary program CDD is working on here.

Turbofan and others,

While some of us think justice is being served on the new coaching staff at USC, those seeking their dream jobs etc, at least a few of us agree Climer's words border on amateur journalism. Kinda tacky and overdone IMO. But if his writings fall short, have you ever heard him? Talk about dead pan boring.

Anyway, Coach Dooley is moving ahead and not trying to get the green light from people like Climer.

Hopefully, more good news is ahead for the Vols.

I agree with the points you are making. I don't think this was a USC for Derek Dooley so much as it was an opportunity to pick up quality football players that had played in a top-notch program. I believe CDD would have done the same thing if the school in question was Texas, Ohio State or UCLA.

If anything, CDD might owe LK a word of thanks for leaving UT and opening the door for Dooley to arrive on the Hill.

It does feel good to have it happen to USC and Lane Kiffin though.

I believe the SEC has rules against senior's transferring into the conference. I think that you have to have at least 2 years of eligibility remaining in order to transfer into an SEC school. If that is the case, Mustain is not an option.

Climer, I don't want to bust your bubble here, but your take on this is just pure speculation. There's another, less dramatic explanation: UT has need of experience and depth on both lines, and a program full of experienced, quality players suddenly came available. It doesn't matter if it is USC, Ohio St, Oklahoma, or Miami. Ut's coaches, given the bare cupboards they face, would be derelict in their duties if they didn't try to exploit the situation to attract this suddenly available source of talent and depth to our campus. The fact that it is Lane Kiffin who is taking it in the shorts here, well, that just makes it all the more sweeter, but it isn't the objective.

You could have looked at it that way. Why didn't you?

"Opportunist" is the most sensible word. Unless Climer could show that there is an unwritten coaches codes about not recruiting players that want to leave. If this had been ND instead of SC, I believe Dooley still would have sent a letter asking to talk with certain players.

I like Malik Jacksons comment in that article:

"Yeah, I just decided to transfer to a better situation." A better situation that left the USC staff infuriated.
