Chase Nelson is a senior defensive tackle from Tulsa, Okla. Nelson is said to have started the bar brawl involving a number of UT players is accused of starting the initial fight, according to a Knoxville police incident report released today.

KNOXVILLE - A University of Tennessee football player who previously had not been connected to the weekend bar brawl involving a number of UT players is accused of starting the initial fight, according to a Knoxville police incident report released today.

Chase Nelson, 22, started a fight with 20-year-old bar patron Gary Russell inside Bar Knoxville, 1820 Cumberland Ave., just before 2 a.m. Friday, Russell alleges in a statement to the Knoxville Police Department.

But according to a UT Athletic Department official who declined to be identified because of an ongoing investigation, an internal review showed Nelson wasn’t even present the night of the brawl.

The fight quickly escalated as several more patrons became involved before it spilled outside onto the sidewalk, where an off-duty Knoxville police officer was knocked unconscious when he attempted to intervene.

No one has yet been arrested or charged in the attack on Russell or the subsequent assault against KPD Officer Robert Capouellez. The police investigation is continuing.

Nelson, a senior defensive tackle from Tulsa, Okla., has been serving an academic suspension since the end of the spring semester and has not taken part in any team activities, a UT Athletic Department spokesman said today.

Wow, I guess they've found the sacrificial lamb. I still think the bar patron provoked the fight. Too many people even in knoxville take pleasure in kicking a team that is Down.

So that's why he wasn't eligible. If he indeed started all this, then he's gotta go. Who kicked the cop in the head and ran off? Myles?

Ok..Here it is..according to Tony Basilio and his "inside" sources....Marlon Wall will be the one charged with the assult on the downed officer. Marlon has admitted this to CDD and other coaches and players. He is supposed to meet with KPD and get this thing on the road to conclusion.

UT football players went in looking to "whip somebodys azz". Jantzen Jackson's name is also in this as he was supposedly picked up and body slammed by a bouncer.

Myles, decided to resist arrest after realizing that his football days at UT would be over, so he elbowed the officer and ran.

Also look for more players to be associated with this and more punishment from CDD.

What about Da'Rick? Hell, he got arrested but his name is absent from all reporting.

i saw a report on http://tonybasilio.com/ that said Marlon Walls was the one who punched the cop outside the bar but it also said Hughes was the one that started the fight inside so i dont know really what to think. they also said Myles wasnt in the fights when he saw the cop he ran cause he was on probation then they chased him and he hit a cop.If this is all true that is 3 Defensive Tackles that would be bad if they all had to go.my bet is who ever punched the cop is gone he is in the hospital with a fractured skull,if repors are right that would be Marlon Walls.

Still possible that he was trying to break up the fight and when he was grabbed by police, he tried to break loose from the hold they had on him...just speculation on that...maybe he is guilty..maybe not..guess we all would like to know more about this.

he was reportally breaking the fight up or trying and got arrested

I'm afraid I have to agree with you. We are going to end up with two DT's on the whole team and an undersized crew of linebackers to stop teams from ramming the ball down our throats. Doesn't look promising to me. If Nelson and Walls are gone, that is a huge hit in the D line. And IF they have done what is being said, they should be gone along with any others identified in the beating of the officer. GONE.

Tough call on Jackson but you can only use the excuse of "wrong place, wrong time" just so many times. But again, it's Dooley's call and I'm sure he's going to handle it.

Looks like we may end up playing a lot of 3-4-4's this season. Whoever was involved and this is second offense...send them home. Apart from kicking officer while down, first offenders lot of extra running and acknowledgement that next offense will mean they're off the team. May have to amend my 8 win prediction. ROCKY TOP!

According to Tony Basilio and his "sources" Will Muschamp was a lock to be TN's next coach. When that went away, David Cutcliffe was the next lock from his sources. After that coaching search fiasco and all the sources I will just wait and see what happens with all of this.

You do realize Fulmer had 20 players arrested in a 16 month period between '04-'05. Also, he had 9 arrested in '95. They named a mythical award after his players criminal activity. The Fulmer Cup.

How many coin tosses did it take to form that opinion? So you think a smaller guy decided to provoke a fight with at least half a dozen players? About the only way that happens is if he's too drunk to fight in the first place.

And if it really took that many players to deal with this situation, how well do you suppose they'll do against some real competition - like top-caliber SEC linemen? Any bets on who does the kicking then?

Does not sound that way to me. If the guy was a senior who could not make the grades, why was he still in Knox. let alone in school ?

that makes no sense how would 3-4 need more DT,s and who are you to blast the guy he is talking about 3 lineman compared to 4 lineman also you have to manage with what you have this aint bama if you got good lineman then play more lineman if not play more linbackers also they dont have to be 300 lbs to be strong or fast on a 3-4 stick a fat guy in the middle witch i am sure we can find. 2 good de,s and 4 good linebackers if we have no dt,s then thats what we will have to do its easyer to make up for one nosegard and a backup then two dt,s and 2 back ups and it is easyer to move a fast DE in to a linbacker spot for a play or 2 to let some players rest and rotate, there are more sceams to do with a 3-4 with less DT,s than you can do with a 4-3 lets put it that way, but any way this is a fan site not a coach and learn site so back off i cant stand no it alls.

So now there is proof Nelson was not even at the Bar? Damn, why does anyone including KPD believe drunks in a bar fight at 2 AM? I bet there was not one person, including the owner, in the bar that could count from 10 backward, LOL. 10, 8 know I mean 9!

Your Honor, all drunks, no video, lost memory hum?

Still all players present should be internally disciplined by CDD and let this end!

I think the biggest offender here is Bar Knoxville. Padlock the doors and put it off limits to all UT students. Maybe these underage offenders would have a better chance of staying out of trouble if the owners of BK had followed the rules. That is not saying cut the culprits any slack. One thing for sure---this has to stop. Everyone of them should be running at 5 AM until their tongues hang out.
