Montana is replacing North Texas as Tennessee's 2011 football opener, UT announced Monday.
UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said North Texas wanted to open its season at home to celebrate a new stadium.
"At the same time,'' Hamilton said, "they were willing to assist us with an opening we had on our schedule in a future year that we have had trouble filling.''
The date for the rescheduled North Texas game has not been finalized, nor has the remainder of the 2011 season.
Montana, a two-time Division I-AA national champion in 1995 and 2001, will play in Neyland Stadium on Sept. 3, 2011.
The Grizzlies play in the Big Sky Conference and are also five-time national runners-up in what is now known as the Football Championship Subdivision.
"This will be one the biggest games we've played in our history,'' said Montana athletics director Jim O'Day, "not to mention that we will be playing in front of the biggest crowd ever to watch a Grizzly football team play.''
