Vols change 2011 opening opponent

Montana is replacing North Texas as Tennessee's 2011 football opener, UT announced Monday.

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said North Texas wanted to open its season at home to celebrate a new stadium.

"At the same time,'' Hamilton said, "they were willing to assist us with an opening we had on our schedule in a future year that we have had trouble filling.''

The date for the rescheduled North Texas game has not been finalized, nor has the remainder of the 2011 season.

Montana, a two-time Division I-AA national champion in 1995 and 2001, will play in Neyland Stadium on Sept. 3, 2011.

The Grizzlies play in the Big Sky Conference and are also five-time national runners-up in what is now known as the Football Championship Subdivision.

"This will be one the biggest games we've played in our history,'' said Montana athletics director Jim O'Day, "not to mention that we will be playing in front of the biggest crowd ever to watch a Grizzly football team play.''

Why would UT want to play a 1AA team instead of lowly 1A N. Texas? I dont like it when teams play those. I understand UTC because UT is helping its own in state school out, but Montana?

Yea, you can thank Hamilton for that Wyoming loss. Thats what happens to a team that gets the head coach fired during the same week. Kind of a distraction to players and coaches dont you think?

Wyoming is in the Mountain West...however, we have scheduled Montana...which is D1-AA.

So what are ala, flar, an other skools ad's doing if they schedule as such? Oops that didn't fit with your ongoing conspiracy theory about our Athletic Director. Seriously this is funny trying to figure out which of you wants to be humiliated the most. You say who? You and doktor49+1vol that's who.

On topic, these games are going to be here for years to come and have nothing to do with that strange accusation of AA batteries program.

What!?!? I knew he did all that other stuff, but swerving to hit pedestrians just might be too much for me to get over.

Well, that will make two home openers in a row for which I will not bother to drive up from Atlanta. At least Montana is a pretty good D1-AA team...as opposed to UT-Martin.

So you think Hamilton is scared of North Texas? I truly hope thats not the case, but one has to ask. why? It couldnt be to help season ticket sales or build excitement.

that is an utterly ridiculous claim

Also to say they wouldn't beat Maryville is absurd. In fact, Montana might be able to defeat our Vols THIS season. Thankfully we're playing them NEXT year.

Besides, I'm not getting bent out of shape having to play the FCS teams. With the 12th game, it's harder to schedule FBS teams for every game, and now all games count the same. Better Montana than Charleston Southern!!!

Also, Montana is BETTER than UNT, so to drive to see us play UNT and not Montana is silly.

Contrary to popular belief, Montana and Wyoming are not actually the same state.
Montana is in the Big Sky conference. They are an excellent 1AA team (current champions I believe) but still not 1A.

With a club, or by PETA-approved methods?

They did lose in the Championship game, but that was their only loss of the season. So agreed, they are an excellent program and could probably pound N. Texas.

And let's not forget a little hire by the name of Bruce Pearl.

This is scary to me. Montana is a beast in 1A. That game last year against Edwards and AppSt in the snow/blizzard in Missoula was awesome. They get a lot of players who could play D1. I saw them a couple years back here in Chattanooga for the 1A NC game, and was impressed with coaches and program as a whole.

Montana next year scares me.....

These comments are teh funnyerz. First off, I agree with everyone who says we shouldn't be playing 1-AA (FCS, for you hall pass monitors) teams. Tennessee has NEVER, EVER played a 1-AA team. It was a feat shared by I believe only 1 or 2 more schools. One was Michigan, until they played Appy State.

Now, say what you will, but playing a crappy 1-A team is a more sure way to get a free win than playing a really great 1-AA school. It's a no-win situation, because you win because you're supposed to, or you lose, and turn into the punchline Michigan did.

Nextly, Hamilton. He's done some good things sure, for the construction industry anyway. I'll give him his props for bringing in Bruce Pearl, but I think it was more luck that he hit a home run with Pearl, because we have to remember this is also the decision making process that fired Phil Fulmer, hired Lane Kiffin, and then hired our 47th choice in Derek Dooley.

I think he's so far assumed that Tennessee fans have nothing better to do than spend their money on Tennessee athletics, and that being the case has sort of painted himself into a corner having to pay off all these construction pet projects so that he could make it into the history books. And what better way to do that than screw legacies out of their season tickets, raise prices, screw casual fans out of being able to go to games, and cater to the maybe 200 folks in the area who can afford $10 grand a year for tickets.

Wow, that was ranty and long. I will close with: I don't know what I just wrote. So if you disagree, you're wasting your typing fingers.

even though montana is 1aa, they are probably better then north texas (low-tier sunbelt team).... I'm guessing UNT didn't want to play or didn't feel that they were getting enough money.... either way, i don't really care.... its not like we are replacing a marquee team with a cupcake.... we are replacing a cupcake with a cupcake... You know, some of you are sounding really silly........knocking Montana. All you had to hear was Div II. To go further with this, look around at other schools who play such teams from time to time.

It's okay if they do it, but not Tennessee.

Many of you just see Div II and go ballistic? Why?
Because a division I- A team just might lose to one of these guys, and that scares you.

Just ask Michigan after they played Appalachian State if it's possible.

HallowedHill writes:

It is NEVER a good idea to play a division II school - just ask Michigan (they did manage to beat Florida that year). IMO, it is a lose-lose situation. If you win, you get no BCS points, if you lose, you take the worst possible hit.

GO VOLS!

orangecountyvols writes:

To take this a step further, a lot of us are asking for the Vols to play Southern Cal. That's what the clown at USC wants. To hopefully stick it to us one more time.

Are we afraid to play them? Heck no. Better still is to let that idiot squirm some more........not getting everything he expects to get.

HallowedHill writes:

GO VOLS!

orangecountyvols writes:

Back to the issue, one last time. Of course we all would like to play the best and beat people like Southern Cal like a drum, if possible. It'll happen in time. Just don't think the surfer dude will be there when we play them.

Not taking shots at other teams in particular, but if they played a schedule such as the one Tennessee has in 2010, those teams would welcome a not-so-Alabama type team themselves. Finally, Montana is not the weakest kid on the block in their league, and yes, we should be able to handle people a lot better in 2011.

To me at least, I see Kiffin as a screwed up individual at USC and am wondering what the L A people and USC alums must be thinking these days.
