DESTIN, Fla. - The SEC is considering tweaking its men's basketball format.
The league is looking at possibly scrapping its divisions and putting all 12 teams together for the regular season. It also might keep the divisions and seed the teams Nos. 1 through 12 for the postseason tournament.
Conference commissioner Mike Slive says the options will be discussed during the league's annual spring meetings this week.
Several coaches and athletic directors questioned the SEC's current format last season. The Eastern Division dominated the West in 2010, going a combined 9-27 against the West in the regular season, and placed three teams in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Five of those regular-season wins came against lowly Georgia.

think the record posted of 9-27 was the other way around.... nice attention to detail. fix and make this post look stupid

Yeah I reread the article twice and it still
is incorrect. The article should read
the West vs. East was 9-27 not East vs. West 9-27.
Not sure if they will all agree on change or not. I think Pearl is for the change.

If they scrap the division, how do they schedule? You can't play 22 conference games, so you don't do a home and away with each team. you could do a home and away with 8 schools and rotate. Or, you could simply keep the divisions and seed 1 to 12 like the ACC does.
In reality, you are only attempting to protect the no 3 team in one of the divisions, to keep them from playing a first round game if they have a better record than the no 2 team from the other division. both division winners should get a first round bye.

They could make it where you play 5 teams twice (home and home), and play the other 6 once. I know this is what they do with divisional play, but you can do it with one big conference as well. They shouldn't seed it 1-12 without divisions.

Keep the division and seed the overall conf 1-12.
I like the home and home within the division and playing the other division teams once.

East went 9-27 against the West. More great proofreading from KNS.
During the season, it's about CONFERENCE record only-not division rank. At the tournament, they flip this and it's suddenly about DIVISION rank. If we extended tournament seeding logic to the regular season, then MSU and UK were co-SEC Champions. Of course that's foolish. So is the seeding plan in light of how the conference schedule is actually played.
Regular season: As-is.
Tournament Seeding: By conference record 1-12.

Give KNS some credit! At least they knew it was East versus West! A long time ago, someone posted North v. South and I nearly choked on my morning coffee.

OK - it's over 12 hours later and KNS still has not fixed it. They must be down in Destin watching for tar balls to wash ashore.

Slive's got priorities. SEC can't address this until Slive makes sure that no Alabama football opponent has an open date the week before playing the Crimson Tide.

Hate the idea of scrapping divisions. If you do that then you dont get to play each team twice. As a season ticket holder I would not be happy about not getting to see Kentucky,Florida, and Vandy each year.

Maybe they can take away the divisions in the standings, but let teams who would be in the east have a home and home vs. each other & same with the west. I'd miss home games each year vs Ky, Fl and Vd too.

Agree with many of the posters who advocate keeping the divisions and the balanced schedule for the regular season. Then, as it should have been done from the start, seed the teams 1 - 12 for the tourney no matter where they finished in the divisions.
The only reason this came up is because Slive took a beating this BB season when the west division was so weak and received 'system' seeds that really had not been earned on the court. Remember, with Slive it is all about keeping the noise down.
That's why he despised Kiffie and some of the other schools for calling out how key calls were being blown during the football season that seem to benefit the current royalty class. Can't have the peasants rising up and making a fuss when they are getting trampled. That is not good for conference solidarity, at least, Slive's version of it.

Everything would stay exactly the same other than the seeding process for the tournament..Instead of E1, E2, W1, W2 getting a bye the top 4 teams would get it.

Nice work. I remember a few years ago when Tennessee faced four opponents who had a bye week before they played the Vols, there was no discussion of it until the Vols played the fourth one. bama has been whining about the 2010 schedule since January.

9&27, I didn't realize Vandy had that many wins over the last 36 SEC games?? interesting.
